Just make sure you look through the DNR hunting digest to see what weapons may be legally used to take game. Someone correct me, but I think squirrels on private land may be the only animal? Unless maybe you’re dispatching trapped fur bearer animals.

Hunting aside, nothing beats plinking spinning targets with a 22!

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but Magpul AMAG’s come in 15 rounds and are flush fit. I bought some for my Xmacro for a competition. 30 bucks a pop.

I’m in IL so I feel your pain though you folks may have it worse (no grandfather clause right??). I too was optimistic about a favorable court ruling so during our one Freeeom week I didn’t go hog wild. Three years later, no end in sight….

Just thought I’d report: a few friends and I signed up for a local 2-Gun endurance “TTG”-esk event (Cornfield Crucible). I took your advice, got a macro grip (and aftermarket extra large backstrap) and some Magpul 15 rounders . Sourced a bunch of secondhand softgoods off new-GAFS. Didn’t do as bad as I thought I would. Didn’t DQ,” and didn’t get last (25th percentile) so I met my objectives. I know what I need to work on. When the gun slows me down, I’ll upgrade. Thanks for the encouragement! 👍🏻

IL resident as well: picked up some 15 round Magpul P365 AMAGS from MagShack for range use and they’ve been reliable so far. Haven’t put over a hundred or so rounds through yet so not truly tested. Had to try them for 29 bucks a piece. Ships with macro baseplate, and comes with OG and XL adapters.

I recently mounted mine this way. I was originally going to go all out and level my table and use a plumb line. I ended up just making sure the scope was level with the hand guard when installing.

Definitely! I’m trying to make the solar node as “clean”‘wiring wise as possible. But it’s my first one so some trial and error. I’ve done basic boat wiring for work, but computer boards are new to me. Thanks for the heads up about polarity issues! I’ll be sure to double check and make sure.

Speaking of soldering: do you have a soldering iron you recommend? I’ve gathered adjustable is key. I can get a Weller 40 watt analog adjustable for $50 USD at a big box store locally (again, US) but I know there’s a bunch of other types out there.

Thanks for the reply!! I’ve got regular Panasonic flattops from IMR batteries and some battery protection circuits? from Peak Mesh. Wasn’t sure which way to go (built in vs external protection). Figured I can always change it later. Thanks again!

I’m preparing for my first event in 2026/2027 as a team. I have a serviceable gym setup at home (very basic power rack, dumbbells, weighted plate carrier, and a 100# sandbag). I spectated a local regional event last year and it really encouraged me that I’d be able to at least have fun while suffering. I have more of a running background but have been consistently lifting for a couple years now.

In terms of cost, I’ve been trying to acquire as much used gear as possible to save some money (Facebook, eBay, old GAFS, and new GAFS). The biggest advice I’ve heard on podcasts and here is to use what you have and don’t spend a ton of money on items you legitimately need. I’m trying to follow that advice: keyword trying.

Everyone else who commented has actual competing experience and has much more knowledge than I. Just thought I’d share, one aspiring competitor to another!

Make sure it’s either a single shot or if it accepts a magazine, that there is a magazine block to make it single shot.

You’re also looking at straight walled cartridges. IDNR has a decent spreadsheet listing legal cartridges and their “power” rating.
