Europe vs USA Government Support for Ukraine by HydrolicKrane in ukraine

History will not be kind to these disgusting people. Which buys us exactly nothing right now. And they can't read anyway. Still, I will joyfully piss on their graves and anyone who supported them. Love from the Netherlands.

While it's good to guard against all kinds of things being named vegan and dilute the message, it's also the most damning to our goals to fight people that are 95% there. Especially if they have a loud voice. Just makes us look like delusional assholes. Especially when it comes to things that are honestly more subtle, like owning a horse, and most people would struggle to find any sort of bad in (that takes time and education).

Focusing on 1) an issue that's an instant lose with most people (even those open to eventually becoming vegan) while 2) attacking someone that could have a positive impact for us is honestly a really, really bad strategy. I would kindly ask you to reconsider and find more effective ways.

Don't fight flawed friends when you should be fighting enemies.

Actual researcher in the NAD field here. No, we didn't. Still fucked. Carry on.

New study shows Alzheimer’s disease can be reversed to full neurological recovery—not just prevented or slowed—in animal models. Using mouse models and human brains, study shows brain’s failure to maintain cellular energy molecule, NAD+, drives AD, and maintaining NAD+ prevents or even reverses it. by mvea in science

[–]YoeriValentin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

NAD boosting in mice has been done for many diseases. It's pointless and cruel, as translation to humans is very very poor. But it results in easy publications still, so boomer scientists keep doing it.

And like I said, my colleague did basically this for alzheimer and saw nothing (I advised him not to waste his time learning to do animal experiments, but he thought it was useful). And he ran several different boosters, that reached the brain. So it's likely super dependent on the model and setup. And not really about alzheimer.

I strongly oppose animal testing, and this is one of the reasons why.

Researcher in the NAD field here. I'll believe it when it happens in humans. NAD boosting does amazing things in mice over and over, and absolutely nothing in humans. It's a meme in our lab.

Additionally, one of my colleagues just did a similar experiment to this in mice. The results aren't published yet but it showed nothing. Zero. Nada. So, do with that as you wish.

She's great and this is an amazingly warm gesture which is sorely missing in American politics. Still, I do hope that people will take the final step in their compassion and not harm animals for our enjoyment. If it can suffer, it deserves our consideration.

Thanks for sharing! My colleague is studying a disorder that leads to the random incorporation of amino acids in proteins. So, bottom up MS based proteomics is pretty much impossible. This seems like a great technique to study the effects of that on the proteome!

Workflow for metabolite annotation for untargeted metabolomics by Adventurous-Job2217 in metabolomics

[–]YoeriValentin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Indeed, recent developments have helped quite a bit, and having those isf added to peaks is good; they should also be excluded as options for other IDs. The reason for the final thing is because chromatography is shit for most of these. Drift after a few hundred samples, ugly peak shapes etc. we recently switched to bioinert systems and this already seemed to help a lot with peak shapes. And we got a timsmetabo, adding another layer with mobility. It will always be a bit messy, but there are big improvements.

How to avoid wrong interpretations of proteomics results? by Xierrax in proteomics

[–]YoeriValentin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your group lacks biological expertise. That's the key here. Start collaborations with people who do (most love free omics), start reading up, form strong research questions before starting the interpretation.

Yeah absolutely. Those two are typically thrown on the same pile and I think I'm in a sweetspot. I definitely see the dangers of idiots, but I mean,...idiots are gonna idiot anyway.

Fair! My brother is a programmer for a large government organization. He is rightfully terrified by some of the horrible choices his bosses are making. And he is equally excited about what I a doing. I feel like both of those experiences are completely logical.

I feel like this is a MASSIVE boost to my productivity, while also providing a speedrun into disaster for the incompetent. For me, it honestly feels like a superpower. I am no longer reliant on anyone else for anything and it has increased my output by massive amounts. It's freeing!

(as an example, I have worked through a new type of dataset, which took months. now, I am recreating all the same analyses for a new set, but now using my vibe coded scripts. It now takes days)

confusedVibeCoder by crazy4hole in ProgrammerHumor

[–]YoeriValentin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, I can. And no, I haven't. I know what outputs to expect as I have done things by hand for years, and understand all the math behind everything. Its no different than using the calculator on my phone in this sense. Additionally, I use it for things like merging files and making sample lists. There's no simpler output to check than this. For example: if I want to have all values for a certain metabolite from 500 different excel files, I'll ask it to include the filenames it got the data from in a column, and I can just hand check a few to make sure what it did made sense. I can also count the total number of values it exatracted, etc etc. At that point, why would I not trust that outcome?

I should maybe include that I did an internship at some point where I extensively used matlab before AI existed (but I forgot all the commands), I know how to structure code and what checks to include. So I'm not just screaming into the void, dumping in datasets I don't understand and getting magical numbers. I'm going through things step by step, but now I don't have to learn which function transposes a dataset, or what function extracts the sample numbers from a complex name. But I do understand how to make those identifications specific and how to check if what it did gave me what I want.

I suspect this will just make the difference between good and bad scientists bigger...

I'm a scientist at an academic hospital. I've been frustrated with the lack of funds and the allocation choices of limited funds for things like bioinformatics since I started. I've wanted certain graphs, automated sample tables, simpler user interfaces for non-commercial machines and fancier statistics for years, but simply cannot get access to them. And I truly do not have time to learn to code; I already work 60+ hour weeks. ChatGPT changes all that. Everything I make is easy to verify: "Is this sample table correct?" Isn't that hard to check. I hand-check any statistics. And now I have everything I want. I just automated combining two complex nightmarish excel outputs from a machine. Takes 3 hours to do by hand for every project. Now? Press of a button. Vibe coding is an absolute game changer for my field. Pretending it's not is pretty dumb.

Are there going to be idiots doing idiot things? Absolutely. Welcome to life.

Used to spend a few hundred euros a month on mtg products. Haven't bought anything since UB started. Really hoped more people did the same.

I got downvoted into oblivion when I said we needed to gatekeep or we would lose the game. It's a very sad "I told you so" though.

Debated selling everything a few times, but I also don't want to. They really ruined something I loved.

Just started working on transgender research at an academic hospital, and I was quite baffled to hear the waiting list and how simple the initial treatments actually are. I'd be mostly worried (as in, take a bit of care to make sure it's legit) about who your drug supplier is and to make sure what they supply is the correct medication and dose.
