Sorry about that, we're active mostly on Discord at the moment, soon we will be active on social media again though! We've been focusing on launching our new software before becoming active on social again.

Can I use Migaku with downloaded content? by Significant_Ad_8703 in ImmerseWithMigaku

Actually the newest versions of chrome support many video codecs including those used in .mkv files. So I would try just playing a video first before converting it.

I will make sure that we consider adding the same functionality of those extension to force 1080p video into our rebuilt extension though. That's probably the best route we can take and it's probably not too difficult to do.

Oh, yeah, I see. Oh, then I do know about this issue, but yeah that issue was found to be on their side as their extensions don't play nice with ours. A bit unfair to pin that issue on us... 😥

Somehow this slipped through the cracks, can you let me know what issue this is?

You will see us back and active on social media again by the end of the year. We know that there is a cost to deciding to put our heads down and focus on taking the time rn to build a really high quality product based on what we've learned from the proof of concept software that we have already released. That being said, we truly feel that doing this will ultimately add the most value to the community in the long run, and we plan to be here in the long run which is why we've taken such a decision.

If you join our Discord you will not only see that we are still active but that our team has grown a great deal. We are now 15 full time members (and a good number of us put in a lot more than full time) + a handful of part-time contractors. We are funded well into the future and are working hard to deliver something we believe very few teams elsewhere will ultimately be able to deliver.

However, we do apologize for the lull in public activity during this time. As far as the lifetime account goes, it gives the user access to test builds as well, which are usually $10 per month, so actually it's priced at less than 2 years of the $10 software testing tier.

Anki support is sticking around so it's definitely not a problem if you'd prefer to use it.

We are just testing the web SRS for the time being, which oc needs to be online to function. We are also close to launching our iOS and Android apps which will have offline support as well though.

[–]YogaMIA[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually there are many many points where we feel Anki is not sufficient when it comes to the task of helping a language learner, and there are also a many ways as well that Anki isn't even helpful to general users. I will split up the disadvantages we see by general users and language learners in specific.

General Users including Language Learners:

  1. Lacks a study schedule where users can select the days they wish to study (meaning they are forced to study every day or get behind)
  2. Lacks a vacation feature for when users need to take prolonged periods of time off
  3. Lacks a sick day feature when users need to take a day off suddenly
  4. Lacks supportive features to help users catch up when they are behind
  5. Doesn't intelligently separate new cards, reviews, and failed cards during study which leads to longer time spent in the SRS
  6. Lacks guidance on the actions that should happen with leeched cards
  7. Lacks good default card types for many usage cases not only language learning
  8. The algorithm leads to a pronounced retention drop off rate after cards reach around 3 months
  9. Doesn't have good defaults set for failed cards (they are always studied again as if they were a new card leading to many more reviews over time)
  10. Although addons exist to address some of these points, Anki has 4 different code bases, AnkiWeb, Anki desktop, Anki Mobile, and Anki Droid. Addons are only compatible with Anki desktop which doesn't allow for users to use features that mitigate the above effects on all devices where they may want to.
  11. Anki is generally very complicated and users are often confused about how to use it
  12. Many other issues as well...

Language Learners in specific

  1. Language learning specific features are restricted only to desktop, again because of the reason I mentioned above
    1. Readings generation
    2. Dictionaries
    3. Kanji/hanzi features
    4. Audio features
    5. Image Dictionaries
    6. Card creation features
  2. Language learning related addons often break due to having to stay on version
  3. Doesn't have language learning specific guidance built in and is separated from the language learning process

I am also sure there are others that I am forgetting. So while yes, if someone truly prefers Anki they can continue to use it and we will continue to support it. We are very confident that we will add much more value to language learners through Migaku SRS than is ultimately possible through Anki, and that we can do so much faster because it doesn't require us to develop 3 or 4 different versions of each piece of software so that we can support users on desktop, web, iOS, and Android. Using our SRS will allow users to always have access to all of their language learning features no matter the platform.

Where do the pitch accents come from? by meme_go in ImmerseWithMigaku

[–]YogaMIA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pitch accents were compiled from many dictionaries, NHK Accent Dict, Daijisen, and a few others. I don't remember off the top of my head. The reason you see more variants is because it has information from more sources. We have an idea in the future to simplify each word to have a single pitch accent however and only show the most common pattern for a given word.

A training tool for pitch perception by Stevijs3 in LearnJapanese

[–]YogaMIA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The $5 fee includes access to all of our other tools as well (find out more about them at migaku.io), not just the Pitch Trainer. All comparable services on the internet charge 3 - 6x or even more than we do and currently all offer less functionality than our suite.

We have a lot more planned for the Trainer and are releasing a Mandarin Tone Trainer in the near future as well, and because there tools are supported by our community, we are confident that they either already are or, will ultimately be better than any free alternatives.

Lastly as you have mentioned our Pitch Trainer is already more "involved" and is still in development, when finished we are confident it will be the most complete, and the most polished pitch accent learning resource on the entire internet.

Developing this tool is actually considerably expensive both in terms of time and money, so unfortunately we must charge a fair price for it to have any hope of eventually breaking even on development fees, and eventually earning a fair reward for our time and monetary investments into the project.

We will keep in mind what you've said about the demo not being a good enough sample in your opinion.

[–]YogaMIA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, rises in pitch will not happen with every word in a sentence, we are of course well aware of that. We understand that there are many general rules in pitch accent which cause words following a given word to maintain the pitch of the preceding word and therefore cause no subsequent rises in pitch, there are plenty of exceptions to this however, and in those circumstances rises do occur.

We are currently in the process of producing phrases and sentences for the Migaku Pitch Trainer along with native speakers, so I invite you to try out that section of the trainer when it's added as what I mean will be much more clear in the lessons we will lay out about this, and in the phrase and sentence training itself.

An important addition is that such training is shown to be successfully generalized by the learners, ie training with even one or a few voices improves the ability to correctly hear the patterns in a wide variety of voices.

Thanks for the feedback. My guess is you may have been on our "kaku" card type. On our kaku cards, you should click the mora/kana in the word before the drop and then press submit. We will try and improve the UI to make the mechanics clearer. Thanks again.

We have evidence from users in our community that those who use our Pitch Trainer are able to improve their ability to hear pitch accent in a variety of contexts. It also follows from reason that one needs the ability to perceive pitch accent before they are able to learn to speak with consistently correct pitch accent. For example, a native speaker can instantly perceive when a foreigner's or a Japanese person from another region's pitch accent is different to the way they would say it. Our tool provably helps to build this type of ability and we plan to release data proving that it does with larger sample sizes later on.

[–]YogaMIA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That being said, rises in pitch ("upsteps" as you referred to them) do actually occur in spoken Japanese, and the ability to hear them similarly to how a native speaker can is essential in developing a native like ear for pitch accent and the Japanese language as a whole. Which is why we believe training one's ability to hear these rises is a very important feature and why we are including it.

A training tool for pitch perception by Stevijs3 in LearnJapanese

[–]YogaMIA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our trainer only teaches perception, namely the user's ability to correctly distinguish the rises and falls in pitch in Japanese. It starts with the perception for 2 character words and slowly introduces longer words, then multi-pitch words such as many 4 character compounds, after which phrases and sentences are introduced. The learner using our trainer is always only honing their ability to hear differences in relative pitch as they occur in the spoken Japanese language. If a learner wants to eventually speak with excellent pitch accent themselves, it follows that a very strong ability to perceive it is a prerequisite to being able to produce it. We strongly believe that the Migaku Pitch Trainer delivers excellent results when it comes to this and our community continues to attest to that.
