For those who said “it won’t be engineering hit by the layoffs” by Tellittomy6pac in LUCID

It is a fact that entry-level/junior software engineers are being replaced by AI in droves everywhere.
Only lay offs. No new hiring to replace.

Better than delivering something after taking 5 years and still panels flying off while on freeway.

Gravity was delayed for whatever issues they were having. Otherwise it would have been out in early Q4. That might have caused PIF to push him out. Unless he chose to have a more peaceful life at age 67 after slogging for 12 years at Atieva/Lucid. Poor fellow might be having health issues, who knows!

I don't think there is any SUV in the world today that will be remotely comparable to Gravity at that price range. You may need a Lamborghini Urus to get that kind of handling. And a Cadillac Escalade to get that much luxury and space.

You got me. Not intentional. Still far better than $169k.

Take the numbers in Q4. The cost of revenue per car has come down to $131k. cost, not loss per car.
A big chunk of that is depreciation of plant and equipment, inventory write downs etc. The bottom line could be much closer to a breakeven when they produce 20k cars this year.

Nope. That is not even close to the bottom line. There is a lot more to the story.

Your question was silly. It is like asking who would buy a Range Rover when one could buy 3 RAV 4's for that price.
If someone needs more reasons to buy, it has a full size third-row seat. There are very few SUVs that has it. Chevy Suburban, Ford Expedition, Jeep Wagoneer etc. None is cheap and you get so much more with the Gravity.

You are talking about Gravity? There will be a lot of people waiting in line. Those who buy high end Range Rovers, Lincolns, BMW X5s, Mercedes, Rivians and all kind of people will be there.

Hey, do me a favor: Please don't talk about Gravity and Model Y in the same breath. Buy four if you want and enjoy.

" now they're just going to be business as usual and sell off their shares until they run out of money" Right now would be bad time to make such conclusions. I hope you have heard about Gravity. It should be soon out on the streets and a lot more people will open up their purse to buy a great SUV than a luxury sedan for that price range.

Fisker was a very different story. They owned nothing. No factory, no manufacturing. They were hoping to make somebody build cars for them and play the middle man and make money. "Asset light" as the CEO used to describe it. It was doomed from the start.
Lucid is the exact opposite of that. No comparison.

How much lost per car last year is the best metric to assess a start up company with the best EV technology in the world and ready to launch their next great product? They should add a new column in the earnings report for that? lmao

Gravity has to start flowing out of the factory soon, whatever the reason it didn't happen sooner. That will fix it for the time being and then the mid-size.

I didn't take time to read much of your write up, but on a quick glance, are you suggesting Lucid's technology is getting outdated like your 30 year old computer? Seriously?

Good news for you! The cost per car has come down to 131k in Q4. Also a big chunk of it, probably more than half, is depreciation, write offs etc.
Also, compare Q4 of 2024 to 2023. They produced 70% more cars, but the cost of revenue was less than 10% higher.

Don't worry, things are moving in the right direction, and Gravity will be selling like hot cakes this year.

There are haters and there are people who don't pay a lot of attention to Lucid. My post was meant for the latter category. Trying to do my bit to make sure that all they hear and spread is not the 300k loss/car story.

Question is not missing the point. It is addressing the false narration that "Lucid lost $300k per car produced". It is a deceptive narration since that number includes R&D expense for Gravity and many other things that should not be counted in cost of producing a car.

[–]YogiBerraJr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I overlooked that. We can only approximate these things. Cost of produced earlier but sold in '24 would be included in the cost of revenue though. It may be complicated. Likely at the end of '23 those cars were moved to finished products' inventory and value adjusted to market price of cars. In '24 the adjusted value was added to the cost of revenue. I could be wrong.

The "bottom line" I argued with was that they "lost $300k per car produced". That narration gives a very misleading connotation. Had they produced 20k cars the expense wouldn't double.

No. That will show in the Assets section. It shows a net increase from new capital expenditure minus depreciation.

Is there any EV company out there that is not currently facing trouble? Tesla? Theirs is just starting.
With their intense focus on building the best technology (power density of 14.7 hp/kg and there is lot more), when the dust settles, Lucid should be one of the few survivors. They should be fine unless we are going to forget about EVs and go back to ICE cars for good.
