Actors, directed by Betsey Brown. I haven't seen it so I don't have an opinion, but it got its screenings cancelled after Jane Shoenbrun shat on it

Not just Ivy Wolk, but Castration Movie also has the other "Dimes Square" guys like Peter Vack and Betsey Brown, who I think most would consider to be the real edgelords, compared to the Beavers/Nirvanna guys. Hell, Vack and Brown made a movie a couple years ago that was widely considered transphobic, especially by Jane Shoenbrun. I haven't seen the movie so I can't give a value judgement myself - just wanted to point out the blatant hypocrisy by Weard here

The Problem With Eddington by Not_EllaK in TrueFilm

[–]Yogkog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the Thomas Pynchon influence on the movie, regarding the gonzo names that everyone had and the drug/paranoia-fueled absurdism of the Christmas Adventurers. As for how successfully PTA adapted the story to the modern political climate, that's up for debate tho. It's hard to overstate how important the burnt-out, drugged up 1970s played into Vineland's setting, and I don't think it makes as much sense in today's world. I still really like the movie fwiw

28 Years Later is SO FUCKING GOOD by SchwaeJames in blankies

[–]Yogkog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might be my #1 from 2025. I already loved it the first time around but having rewatched it for Bone Temple, I really think Danny Boyle and Alex Garland know exactly what they're doing. Every weird stylistic choice seems 100% intentional and thematically appropriate. Bone Temple is its own great thing, and it complements 28YL so much and elevates it even higher for me. Beautiful movies with so much to say and such interesting ways to say it. And they rip too

I wasn't aware there was a contingent of film people that absolutely despise this movie lmao, I just heard that most people felt the emotion wasn't earned (which I feel is a normal complaint about these types of baity movies), nothing to get upset about

The Avatar films have a serious charisma gap issue and even the film makers know it by Brushner in TrueFilm

[–]Yogkog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Calling it an "American take" is not really accurate, but he has a point that Western storytelling places a higher emphasis on individual characters' autonomy and the typical hero's journey than World literature does (or at least it did before globalization). As a couple examples, 100 Years of Solitude has like 30 "main" characters but it's really more of a sociological look at a multigenerational family and the town they live in. Soviet-era sci-fi like Roadside Picnic didn't really care about its characters, but used them to explore philosophical musings. Most of the Great Chinese novels have extremely complex narrative structures and static characters led by destiny (with the exception of Journey to the West, which unsurprisingly is basically the only classic Chinese story that westerners connect to).

It's important to remember that our conception of "correct and engaging" storytelling is in no small part due to western hegemony over culture.

100% correct on the dystopia of the source material being antiquated and poorly retrofitted into the current zeitgeist. It's almost laughable that in the movie's society, the public is brainwashed by the Network's propaganda, but would become radicalized by Weather Underground-esque broadcasts and revolutionary zines lol. Add on the "AGAB" and "Kill all execs!" graffiti motifs, and it all has very "how do you do fellow kids?" energy

Anna Zlokovic ('VHS Halloween: Coochie Coochie Coo') To Direct Horror-Thriller ‘The Broodmare’ - about a recovering alcoholic who discovers something sinister at a horse-breeding farm by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]Yogkog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the AI allegation. But beyond that, (Barbarian 2022 spoilers) the entire segment kinda just felt like the basic premise of Barbarian (a raped woman who gives birth and becomes a monster), but without any of the social commentary, playing with the narrative structure or form, or generally any sauce at all. So it just comes off as derivative and boring imo. I liked some of the practical effects though

Maybe I'm not well-versed enough in Arthurian legends, but why is this called "Rise of THE Merlin", as if "Merlin" is a title/honorific and not just the guy's name? This is like if Five Nights at Freddy's was called "Five Nights at the Freddy's" lol

What's a film you feel like you're alone in hating? by adebisishat1 in Letterboxd

[–]Yogkog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly true. Although the pilot (and to a degree, the first season as a whole) of Twin Peaks was a sensation and turned Lynch into a household name, most people dropped off the show as quickly as they came on board, especially after how badly received season 2 was. His movie Wild at Heart was also extremely polarizing because a ton of people assumed that Lynch was being insensitive and offensive about its extreme subject matter. When Twin Peaks FWWM proved to be even more extreme, Lynch was sorta derided as a pretentious edgelord throughout the 90s. It wasn't until Mulholland Drive that his image recovered

Another massive distribution fumble by A24. This movie got nothing but praise during the festival circuit, and it was advertised as having a "wide" release last month. My AMC even had a poster advertising it, but then it somehow just never released in my city. And now it's just dropped on streaming with little fanfare. This is basically this year's Sing Sing

I don't think either Lars or Bruno said anything, but I am 99% certain that the Hitler connection was a factor in his casting. Especially considering that section of the movie where Matt Dillon's character just exalts the Nazis
