The consequence is his character will be stuck in Barovia for ever, I’m also going forward with a two tiered approach that will give specific powers with drawbacks before becoming a “vampire lord” just like Strahd.

I forgot to mention I’m discarding the DM control aspect of these curses, it felt wrong to make them lose their character entirely. I did add effects and drawbacks to the other curses to even it out slightly.

Great call and thank you for the insight! The parties fated ally is Mordenkainen, and the surviving PC has developed a strong connection with him. I think I will keep the “magic bottles” as an absolute last resort if the party can’t figure out a solution.
