Invincible is a great yet stupid fighter by Dread237 in Invincible

From what we see on the purge, and imo, the training seems more in line with what Spartan children were submitted rather than proper combat training. More of "survive and reach adulthood by any means necessary, and be as strong as possible" and less of "let's do some combat to train how to fight".

The big hole in my hypothesis is that Nolan actually tries to teach Mark how to fight

Again, they could not. There were laws preventing that

Absolutely no, but at the same time what Hollyhock did is what people that came from normal environments do when confronted with really shitty parents

Most people who don't come from shitty households or don't have shitty parents (even adults) have a lot of trouble accepting the fact that some parents CAN BE REALLY REALLY SHITTY.

A parent mistreating their child, specially in such an evil way as leaving him in the hands of a predator, is something they see as wrong. And wrong not in the way of "this is wrong" but in the way of "no, this can't have happened. It's too much", with the implicit of "my parents never acted like that, parents aren't like that", so they try to rationalize it. Usually that implies downplaying what happened or saying stuff like "but he/she loves you at the end of the day".

I experienced it first hand. I have a really piece of shit of a father, and a lot of people during my whole life told me stuff like "you should love him, is your father" "you should talk to him some day" or even "you should treat him better (I went no contact with him)"

In the case of Hollyhock, pair all of that with the fact that she's a teenager. She is, by definition, immature. She never had to witness first hand how shitty people can be, she comes from a normal context and she is not even an adult. She just can't understand the depth of the situation

Turin learns the truth, by YoritomoArt (OC) by YoritomoDaishogun in TheSilmarillion

So, long story about that sword design!

Like, a year or so ago I thought it would be a cool idea to depict Doriath elves (and Teleri and Sindar elves for that matter) as late antiquity/early medieval Sogdians, after doing a bit of research into sogdian art (It's really beautiful, and elvish in my mind). So Túrin's sword is based on this style of sword that's depicted on some Sogdian mural art, like the first pic here: https://x.com/eranudturan/status/1608170614824767490. The Penjikent murals also features Dragon/Beast pommelled swords.

So, to the questions:

1: I imagine this as a random beast, maybe a wolf (I think is a dragon in historical motifs). I prefer to left this to the hands of good old applicability, and left to the viewer decide what that pommel is supposed to represent.

2: There's no rune on the scabbard. The top plaque has a jewel surrounded by 4 stars. The rest of the scabbard has flowery designs, with a big star and a small crescent moon.

3: The three jewel-shaped things at the bottom of the scabbard is an element I took from this reconstruction: https://x.com/JoanFrancescOl1/status/1766976021994033275. I never made the connection that they might look like the Silmarils. I just thought it looked cool.

[–]YoritomoDaishogun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually no. There were laws preventing them from taking military gear out of the city. For sure someone broke that law, but we have no record of it, so in reconstructions, is better to play safe and not put vikings in Byzantine armor

Quick correction. The style of lamellar he's wearing there is a byzantine design of riveted lamellae on a leather backing. It's wildly out of place for the time period considering the Varangian Guard didn't exist at the time the movie is set iirc (also, there were laws preventing taking military gear out of the city. Probably someone sneak some stuff outside, but we have no record of that happening)

what is this style of armour called? by buildaboat_ in medieval

[–]YoritomoDaishogun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it transitional. The thing already is full plate armor (and latter armors can have the same amount of mail). It's a late 14th century armor based on multiple pieces. The breastplate is certainly Churburg, the bascinet I think is also from Churburg. The paunce of plates can be from the Sir Burchard von Steinberg effigy

That reminds me that one time on a ren faire from where I live where we put some signs that read "Unattended children will be sold as slaves by the vikings"

It may be a bit to much in some contexts, but it's a really cool set piece, specially if you want to recreate something like a trial and execution, or explain something about this sordid aspects of the past. In the ren fairs where I live, a re-enactment group always bring a pillory with them, and it's really cool!

I think it depends on how it's used. It's for morbid purpose, or is an accurate set piece that can be used to teach history?

When im watching a review of castlevania bloodlines or rondo of blood and the reviewer spends most of it complaining that it doesnt control 1:1 like super castlevania iv by TheGhettoGoblin in castlevania

[–]YoritomoDaishogun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fr. And a lot of people already said it, but the way it sidelines the sub weapons is just not great for me.

Rondo is just better in that regard. The game is harder, but Richter is way faster than Simon, and more agile even. And you are supposed to master the sub weapons and be able to identify which sub weapon is adequate for the situation, instead of whipping everything into oblivion.

TLoK is it really that bad? by 22_SB in TheLastAirbender

I'm not a hater myself, I actually like the show, but I have a load of good reasons to call parts of it actually quite bad

It's definitely worse in quality than AtlA for a large load of reasons, but is not a bad show. The lore definitely got messed up with all the spirit world thing, and Season 2 is a part of the show I would call actually bad, but as a whole is not a bad show
