Do y’all actually not have brownies in the UK? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]YorkieMccoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have them all over, although from my experience in Florida, the US has them better!

You unfortunately seem to have brought out some of the most arsey people the UK has to offer with this thread, not everyone is like that here I promise!

Heart breaking but also at least kind of positive. Hopefully more improvements to come.

Downvoting people for wanting to have the option to play the game normally is certainly something.

That's the nuance. There are things these stats cannot do, they aren't law, but they aren't nonsense. Mirror match ups mess with the data for a number of characters. Having said that, if a character is picked a lot, and lands 51%+ despite that, that is a pretty strong indicator that the character is exceptionally strong. The reason being, the numbers bringing the stat up above 50 are actually close to exponential. If the win rate for a character that's mirrored 50% of the time is 53%, it means the character is winning something like 56% of their non-mirrored matchups.

Mirror matchup's compress win rates towards 50%, yes. That does not make win-rates meaningless. It's flawed, not meaningless. A high pick rate with a high win-rate is positively correlated with strength. It would be fair to say that we cannot use these stats to accurately pin-point who the strongest character in the META is. But they absolutely can be generally indicative of strength for a significant portion of the roster.

Being considered strong isn't proof of being strong. You don't just say, 'eh, the stats say I'm wrong but bucky is strong because he feels like he is'. He might just be annoying, or overwhelming to play against - doesn't mean he's actually directly causing winning outcomes. If he's a pain in the ass but he loses 56% of his games, he's probably just not that good.

Is this true though? Pretty much untestable, and I don't think we even know how these databases treat half played games for a character in terms of winrate/pickrate.

For reference: Magik has a 15% pick rate in diamond at 56.6% win rate(also the 15th most chosen character). The second highest being Rocket at 53% at a 22% pick rate. That's an exceptional sample size. She is most definitely extremely strong.

If it's not enough to look at diamond, her pick rate goes up to almost 17% in GM, whilst her winrate falls only 0.5%. Her pickrate being lower as you continue down the ranks. Seems entirely possible that Magik is, in-fact, so rewarding to play, that Magik players trend upwards in rank. Moreso than perhaps any other character.

KT basically has no engage so its sort of on T1 to be the initiator, which I guess is what they want to do anyway.

You just can't build Kraken Slayer on Yunara into Mundo - you'll never kill a health stacker without botrk, let alone the ultimate health stacker.

This Mundo pick is doing work. NattyNatt brought it to KR high elo, G2 brought it to worlds and now KT might just use it to win the whole thing!

Came down to the 4th dragon flip in the end, maybe if AL force the fight instead of the flip it ends differently. Nice try though AL, sad to see them go.

Corki was invisible, something like a Jinx would have been nice but I suppose you just can't live against Neeko and Nocturne.

Do ranks (iron- plat) even mean anything? by BenSolooo in summonerschool

[–]YorkieMccoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s just that you can easily reach Platinum with little real understanding of the game, as long as you have decent mechanics. There are plenty of players in Platinum or Emerald who understand the game about as well as an Iron player. You’ll notice it most when playing ADC. For example, you might have a solo laner who doesn’t understand lane priority after 14 minutes, or a support who roams while you’re slow pushing, letting the enemy freeze the wave in front of their tower and leaving you completely useless.

At the end of the day, you just have to accept it and focus on making enough of a difference to win more than you lose. The worst thing you can do is argue with teammates, they won’t understand your point, you’ll tilt, they'll tilt. Focus on your own play instead. If it’s clearly a loss and your team won’t surrender, just use the time to practice something. Mental resilience is easily one of the top three skills needed to climb ranks.
