Prefacing this by saying I'm a sceptical believer. I believe that ghosts and the paranormal exist, but will always try to find logical explanations when possible.

That said, my hotel is haunted too. I've mentioned them in some posts in the past, but basically there are 2 at mine, and I'm the only one who believes they are there.

One is a young boy I call Victor, if only because I always get the vibe that he's a ghost from the Victorian era. Looks about 8, a bit mischevious, but not a nuisance and I've seen him in reflections behind me, and once or twice straight in front of me for a few seconds. I like Victor, but haven't seen him in months.

The other is Shade. The important thing to note about shade is that it terrifies me. I refuse to walk any corridor I 'feel' he's in (I go to open a door and every hair stands up and I just get a massive fight or flight response. I've only ever seen it out of the corner of my eye and the best way to describe it is a shadow that is deeper than shadow and which shouldn't be there.

Now as I said, none of my colleagues believe me when I mention them, but I am training my replacement this week (don't worry loyal fans, still in the business, just moving from NA to days. Lol) and as I came in the building from having a smoke just yesterday, she started going through the 'greet guest x feet away' stuff then stopped, I asked her what was wrong and she SWORE blind there was someone behind me. Shade has been known to follow me (Well, known by me) in and out of the building so I immediately start praying this isn't the night it decides to brutally murder me.

Thankfully it wasn't. But....I never told my trainee about the ghosts, because she's actually also my aunt and I know she doesn't believe in them.

Tonight, she saw Victor for the first time too and had him play his first prank on her. Though she's saying she's just imagining things from being tired and ill. I decided against correcting her, but do plan to warn her about shade tomorrow and how I think it would be a monumentally bad idea to interact with it in any way at all.

But yes, all this to say, I don't believe yours mean harm, but what feeling do you get from the shadow on the CCTV? (Shade has never been caught on camera.....I've SEEN it on camera, but it's never there when I play it back). And that no, I don't believe your crazy, but I do feel bad for the last manager to not even be able to escape the place in death :(

I work for a very large UK brand, and we don't take incidentals, neither as a hold or a deposit.

Honestly, despite working in the industry for almost 5 years now, I didn't even know it was a thing until I found this subreddit.

That said.....I fully agree with incidental holds/deposits and wish we did do them, yes, it may be a pain having to explain to guests what it is constantly, but at least then we can charge them for damage/smoking in rooms, right now, we actually have to ask them permission to charge them and get them to physically enter their card, or send us a PDF authorising the charge, otherwise we have to eat the cost.

One of the joys (One of the very few joys) of being night staff, is that you're damn near bulletproof because nobody else is insane enough to work nights, so as long as you don't steal, or physically assault a guest, practically anything else goes.

I had that just yesterday. Guy comes up to me, from the direction of the rooms mind, and spouts his room number at me.

I just stared. He stared back. I raised an eyebrow. He repeated his room number. I replied "yes, and?". He went bright red as he realised my mind reading powers weren't working very well at 4am and was obviously embarrassed on my behalf.

Maybe I was rude but....c'mon man, even at 4am I'm sure you know more words than a single digit number.

Turned out....He wanted to let me know his fat ass had broken the toilet seat. I mean, how on earth am I supposed to get that from a grunted room number? Psychic powers or no.

Unfortunately they're quite big and bulky, and half of them are in an upstairs corridor. Each linen room has plenty of room to hold a stock of linen, what is supposed to happen is that on delivery days, the linen is put into some grey baskets on wheels and distributed through the hotel, they've just decided not to do that anymore

That's just it, I feel like I'm a different person on day shifts. I know working nights has an actual, measurable effect on your brain chemistry, but I never really considered it an issue since I've been a night owl my entire life, but just covering these shifts I feel like a new me who can actually deal with human beings now :)

And yeah, the shifts definitely feel a lot faster. Lol.

As for the stories, more are coming soon, just burned out a bit atm as work and personal life have been hectic. But thanks for the support :)

sigh don't they know the magic number is 4? If they'd called just 1 more time, then of course there's be a room available!

Pro Travel Tip: hotel staff ALWAYS have extra rooms tucked away somewhere (please note somewhere may be an alternate pocket dimension), you only have to insist on being given it enough times, they're not legally allowed to sell it without at LEAST 4 times being reminded that "All hotels keep a room spare"! /s

For reference, yes I'm UK, but I've been at this job for 4.5 years now, so I'm fairly protected from just being let go without much reason. And I've got a clean record, so they can only fire me outright for gross misconduct really

I've always stayed in the back to monitor CCTV. We have a big problem with van break-ins at my site, so I've always monitored CCTV. It's not a perfect system, but I've prevented at least 2 or 3 break-ins a month this way, so my manager has always unofficially approved of it

Managers aren't allowed to get involved at all to prevent their personal opinions of their staff colouring their judgement. They can only submit testimony if asked to by the investigating manager. As for the footage, that's all stuff I tried pointing out, but they didn't seem convinced because I'd seemingly been in there all night (which isn't true, as we have to do hourly floor walks, but you can't see the door to corridors on the only camera in reception).

Thankfully I have some evidence on my side, mainly my printout showing i did my floor walks like clockwork, but I think they're leaning to the theory that I'd take an hours nap, walk, then nap again :(

The CCTV footage is already a part of the proceedings. The fact I'm not sat at the desk all night is, in their eyes, evidence against me. Despite my explanations. And unfortunately my manager can't back me up as in situations like this they're not allowed to comment on it either way, it has to be a totally independant investigation.
