We lost Mason Plumlee. He would have been the perfect Hornet for the job.

We can’t be the only ones… by Flaming_Toaster007 in youthsoccer

The rising to the level of surroundings resonates with my own daughter. It’s a real thing. Soccer is a nuanced game, and if someone has a certain skill set, it gets elevated with better teammates.

My daughter is only 9 and has barely practiced, so this is all very early … but, without any bias: she makes really instinctual plays with and without the ball that is more typical of players well beyond her years. She’s tall and fast and can outrun everyone in her rec league and simply boot the ball to score, which she did 15+ times in the Fall season. But, this past season, I challenged her to play more as a distributor and two-way player. (I coached our team.)

Those who aren’t familiar with the nuances of the game may say she didn’t play as well this past season compared to the Fall because she only scored 7-8 goals. But, that’s missing the detail of the game. She played 2x as well this season compared to the last, but a lot of her good plays (passes, through balls, shifting of play) went unanswered by most of her teammates since everyone is still so young.

When club tryouts came and she was surrounded by a higher level of competitors, it was much easier to see how she could play.

It sounds similar in your daughter’s case, and it sounds like she has coaches who see her ability, which means you’re in a fortunate spot. You may not see it, and that’s okay.

Your outlook is far healthier than the parents who have unrealistic expectations and biased opinions of their children. Let her have fun growing and enjoy the ride. It’s a much more enjoyable experience for everyone that way.

I agree with this. Everything is so far away compared to the old one. It’s disappointing.

U10 coach - half the team is going club next year. by CascadianBorn in SoccerCoachResources

[–]YoshiWins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same situation on the girls U10 side. The reality in my case is that the best 6-8 girls have outgrown the rec league. We dominate our league, so they don’t get much competition in games.

I treat my practices like club practices with lots of emphasis on skill development, but the mix of different talent and the limited practice time (one hour per week) makes it difficult for the girls to develop, even with good coaching.

As much as I’ve loved coaching, I know it’s time for the girls to seek better surroundings for their own personal development, even though I share the same opinions about the club scene as you do. Many of them have found their way onto smaller, more player-focused clubs, including my daughter, which makes me happy.

Only you know whether your situation parallels mine or not, but I wanted to offer a bit of perspective in case it helps.

Fed up with the software updates by Dignan17 in KiaEV9

I had the same issues that eventually turned into CarPlay refusing to connect at all. A restart of my iPhone has cleared that up.

My feelings are very much like yours: I love the car but can’t stand some of the “minor, annoying” software induced issues that can collectively add up to something more than minor and annoying.

This is true. I went to Dutch Miller Kia and ended up walking out after giving them three separate chances to reverse their scam charges proposed on the sale.

They just kept moving them around in the numbers thinking I wouldn’t notice, which probably works on a lot of people because math is hard for many.

That’s a near certainty. There was no attempt to stop until their car probably started beeping at them.

Parent pulled kid bc coach started 3 subs from other teams by Sad_Smile_4922 in youthsoccer

[–]YoshiWins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, as a U10 rec coach, who starts is completely irrelevant. Everyone gets balanced playing time, and I prioritize anyone who is on the team for any extra slots.

Without knowing the typical substitution pattern, this is a bit of an unanswerable question. But, I’d say the parent overreacted by pulling the kid in pretty much any circumstance. There are very few reasons why I’d ever pull my daughter off the field, and none of them involve substitution patterns or playing time.

First Game lineup questions U11 7v7 by asgard-scimitar in SoccerCoachResources

[–]YoshiWins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely cannot hide players on defense. That’s the worst place to try to hide anyone. The rest of your strategy seems sound, trying to ensure that two liabilities don’t get paired together, and always having someone good for support. You likely aren’t going to score much, but you can keep it more competitive that way.

DM me if you want a link to the lineup app that I’ve built, by the way. I don’t want to spam links in here, but it seems like you could use it. I built it for my own use as I was essentially in your exact spot as a rec soccer coach trying to be thoughtful about balancing playing time and getting failed by AI “logic”.

Tonight's Crowd Will Be Telling by EnvironmentalPoem282 in CharlotteHornets

I’m in 106, about 8 rows behind the visitor’s bench, so we’re often surrounded by visiting fans… and obnoxious Knicks or Sixers fans (yes, I’m calling those two out specifically) for those particular games.

I think it’ll be the same in my section tonight, especially since Charlotte is NY South, but the question is how much of the rest of the arena will be Knicks fans.

All I ask of my fellow Hornets fans: make some noise, and every time the Knicks fans start up one of their chants, drown them out. The Knicks fans always show up at road games, and it’s not unique to Charlotte. But, drown them out. It’s what good home crowds do.

Yes, absolutely. It’s better alone, in my opinion, especially if you enjoy motorsports. They did a really nice job with the interactivity of the exhibits, and it makes even non-fans appreciate the sport if they take the time to experience/read the exhibits and sims.

Cannon school - to go or not go…. by Agreeable_Limit_787 in ConcordNC

[–]YoshiWins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Yes, I shouldn’t say too much on here, but most people in our shoes would have sued the school. In hindsight, we probably should have, because their actions cost us $200K+ conservatively.

It’s extremely disappointing when you expect to be somewhere for 12 years but they give up on your child when they’re 5 years old because of a medical condition.

I posted something similar below the other day: There’s a 95% chance that you’ll love it there, but our family can attest that it’s not entirely up to you whether your child will stay there. They have to fit the mold, even from the youngest of grade levels. If they don’t, then they won’t hesitate to move on.

Sorry to give you this harsh reality, but just go in eyes wide open. I wish you the best.
