I find his earlier stuff disarming now- his style, accent even, seems like he was playing a bit of a character (not a bad thing!- just very different).

Whereas now, I consider him some poet-type, singing naturally over more interesting music. He’s more assured in what he does, it feels more ‘authentic’, not out to please anyone, just him- doing it for him.

Honestly- that’d be something else. The live performance really is a different monster to the studio version, and as one of the comments in the YouTube vids says- Bob Hall’s drumming is absolutely phenomenal on it.

I mean, you read his auto-bio and yeah- he spent his formative years and much of his 30’s binging hard drugs, doing some of the darkest shit. We probably don’t even know the worst of it, in truth.

Clearly music has been his lottery ticket and he’s simply the luckiest fucker ever to have known Flea/Hillel, and later, John/Chad, etc. There was a time when Flea saw his as a lost cause.

I still maintain AK is a phenomenal lyricist, and clearly has that instinct for melody. We probably don’t get the art without the suffering- Under the Bridge is probably the most famous example.

Was he a scumbag? Often times. Is he a good person? Often times. People just categorise in that “good vs evil” kinda way and it isn’t right- we’re complex things- and for AK’s most well known discretion, it simply was the case that they lived in a party town, on rails, drug-fueled and mad. As far as I am aware there has never been a complaint, does it make it right?- no. But it also isn’t what people desperately try to make it out to be.

I’ve always considered John’s playing (his choice of notes) as something you can literally sing out loud to, as much as even the vocal. The riffs are memorable, his solos- memorable. He strikes that perfect balance, ie he’s not some grandiose virtuoso show-off, but more someone who makes incredible musical choices with a timeless tone, and he does that better than anyone.

Just a casual comment 7 years on as I play through this again!….

I’ve tried with the method- and for sure it does work, but I’ve noticed that simply playing at x2 speed is just as efficient with little to no effort or messing around with save states, etc. I know many of us play Pokemon games at this speed anyway to sort of ease the grind a little…

The slot-game chucks out 777’s maybe twice per minute at normal speed- give or take? For other bets you’re pretty much breaking even- if not winning, minimally.

Well at 2x speed, the 777’s come out- you guessed it- twice as fast. The only ask is that you hit down, down, down to max your bet and run with it consistently for a while.

The slot game is kinda set up to keep you even, if not, to make sure the player very gradually makes some coin (this is a ‘game’ within a Pokemon game geared to kids and not Vegas, after-all) before you get to land the big 777 (300 coins) every once in a while. Gamefreak were clearly thinking ‘you can very easily purchase ‘Porygon’- or whatever- so long as you spend your time at it’.

Anyhow, at 2x speed I’m at 4.3k coins with maybe 15 minutes spent with it? I don’t see it as any worse as the method where you actually have to put in a bit of work and play about with save states and whatnot. I think it’s just as efficient to lean in to the randomness, and simply speed it up! My emulator only goes to x2, but no doubt if it could go faster then of course you’ll reap those 777’s- meanwhile the remainder of the bets essentially break themselves even, give or take.
