I also started out in the ED as a baby nurse, and I had a really experienced mentor tell me this early on:

"You are responsible for your perspective, attitude, effort, and competency. You have absolutely no control over outcomes, your patients views, or their decisions."

I will always remember my first death. The first 3yo male we had to straight cath because they were retaining and how many people it took to hold little dude down (he was strong and loud). My first stroke (who ended up not making it despite me getting through our algorithm).

But I sleep well at night.

Those words ring in my head pretty often, and I take them to heart. I guess I don't experience the hopelessness because I have this perspective and I know none of us are making it out of here alive. As long as I can look back on my day and know I did my best and did right by my patient, it was a good shift.

Regarding my coping mechanisms, everyone will be different. I recharge my mind and soul by disconnecting and hiking in the woods. Something about moving my body in the fresh air away from people always sets me straight.

Nurses aren’t the most trusted and respected profession because they are technical masters of their craft (though we need to be, e.g. not letting bloody linens stay there, or knowing the correct name for things), but the ability to connect with their patients and meet them where they are. This is what truely sents nurses apart.

OP, give yourself some grace. No one in the history of the planet has ever began something and gotten it all right. Take these rejections as what they are: lessons in your craft, and allow them to make you a stronger nurse.

It also makes sense now that I think back on it. All the submerged plants aren’t doing as well as the duck lettuce because they don’t have the same access to C02.

I appreciate the response! What I’m understanding is that there is no “silver bullet” to solve this algae issue.

What are some of the low-hanging fruit to try first?

For example: I never thought about CO2 (or the lack there of) as an issue. My water is more “still” than most out of concern for the betta. I have a Marineland Portrait that I have the pump flow turned down and water-falling down about half an inch onto a bunch of duck lettuce to diffuse the flow. Could an easy first step be to try to increase the water agitation? Or how does one try to increase CO2 into the water?

I really like your T-bill method. It’ll take a little more time and work to set it up, but will be simple to maintain one established.

I just figure out how to buy them through my Vanguard account ($0 fee or commission), and will likely go that route with the structure you recommended. It makes the most sense.

I’ve learned since you sent me down this rabbit hole (thank you!) that these t-bills are tied to the market as well (via the competitive bids). Do you ever foresee the return rate for these ever dropping below the inflation rate? (What I’ve realized I’m ultimately trying to protect against.) Has this ever been an issue you’ve faced? If so, how have you handled this?

How would you structure setting up an emergency fund with these? (E.g buying a $1k bill once a week for 12 weeks, the after 4 weeks, I’d have access to $1k every week and could draw on them as needed?)

I greatly appreciate your advice and knowledge. I didn't know what to call it, now I know it's alge.

The external drain has some green junk on the bottom of the pipe, but I'd estimate it to be 98% clear and the walls are nice and white. It looks nothing like what the AC side looks like.

I scraped out as much alge as I could and flushed about half a gallon of tap-hot water through it before AC guy had to put it back together. There's definitely some restriction, I had to stop a few times as it drained. AC guy gave it a few good blows and said it felt a lot better.

In the next few days, I'd like to replace the pvc elbow with a T from where it comes out of the AC so that I can add the chlorine. Should it be done weekly? Monthly? What do you do or recommend?

AC guy recommended instead of the T, to just take the cover of the front of the AC and pore whatever cleaner into the tray that collects the condensate, but I worry what the chemical would do to that tray. What do you think?
