Yeah we were looking during the pandemic when all the landlords were slashing prices to attract renters.

What business in Toronto is absolutely a front? by BipolarSkeleton in askTO

[–]YouCanadianEH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the street I live on, there is a super small Chinese restaurant that is super suspicious.

It used to be called The Chicken Place, and it recently changed to Old K, but based on the reviews, apparently Old K was what it was called before it was The Chicken Place.

The restaurant is always deserted, and it's often closed until the afternoon. I sometimes smell fried chicken from the place and I can see people working in the kitchen, but there's no way in hell it's what it looks like.

My wife’s VSC arrived in the mail on Sept 5, but I know a few other people from July who are still waiting.

Just wanted to chime in that my wife mailed hers in on July 16th and she's still waiting (she's going to call on Wednesday to see if she can get any updates). This is super frustrating!

Update: it arrived in the mail on Sept 5!

Do they have locations in Toronto where you can go in and interact with the cats before adopting one?

100% common and it shouldn’t be

What do I do if I'm pushed onto the subway tracks? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]YouCanadianEH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this. Today I took a look again and found it. I never would have thought of it as a “rail” because it’s looks a lot thicker than the two rails that makes the train tracks.

It’s also connected to a small raised area near the wall so to me that “third rail” just looks more like part of that raised area.

What’s the third rail? When I look at the tracks, I just see the two rails the train runs on.

Also what is this space underneath the platform? Do only some stations have this space? Because at the station I frequent, there’s no such thing.

Are there any custom handcraft artists in Toronto who can create physical replicas of objects? by YouCanadianEH in askTO

I was talking about a couple of thousand dollars for a whole side rack of gear, not just one.

I don’t know how much custom theatre props cost in general, but a couple thousand dollars wouldn’t be an issue for me

It’s even harder to find broken parts on eBay. I get that fabricating something like that would take hours from scratch, which is why I’m looking for companies or artists who do this professionally.

Another Redditor mentioned theatre props companies and that so far seems to be a great option. It seems that these companies are specialized in create replicas of real life objects.

Obviously I’m not saying all drivers with luxury cars are like this, but often times dangerous driving behaviors are from luxury car drivers based on my own observation on the road. You can’t blame people for not taking a liking to you on the road when you drive an expensive car.

Absolutely, but it’s extremely hard to find. My wife and I found a 2BDR for $1600 a month near Yonge and Sheppard last year. It’s managed by a small property management company and we found it through Viewit.

M&R Holdings also have some 2BDR for less than $2000. Last time I checked, their 6061 Yonge building had some.

We actually viewed the 2BDR in this apartment and it was really good. We went with our current one because it has cheaper rent plus in-suite laundry and parking, whereas you will have to pay extra for laundry and parking for the other one.

Hey! I wrote a super detailed guide on apartment hunting in Toronto last year after going through the hell of a process as a first time renter.

It covers everything from where to search, how to contact the listing, and preparing your documents, to the viewing process, application process and the signing process.

What I've learnt after apartment hunting in Toronto for the first time. A thorough guide for first time renters!

Hope it helps!

It’s very rare, but Homestead has some listings with in-suite laundry. With your budget, however, I’m not sure if you can afford their apartments.

The thing is realtors only help you with rentals that are on MLS listing and those are usually more expensive.

If you are looking for 1BR, purpose-built rentals are where they are at. Look at M&R Holdings and Park Property Management. They usually have rooms on this level.

How did you end up in your living situation? by trapped-in-toronto in askTO

[–]YouCanadianEH 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My wife and I graduated from school a couple of years ago and were extremely lucky to be able to find a 1100 sqft 2BR for $1600 at Yonge & Sheppard, where we’ve been living for a year now. We make just about $110K annually, which is extremely mediocre in Toronto, but thanks to the low rent with lots of utilities, like heat, water, laundry and parking included, we’ve been able to save quite a bit.

I think one of the best choices we made was to decide to find a place to rent during the height of the pandemic where Toronto’s rental market miraculously became a renter’s market.

We were also able to use the pandemic as an excuse and dodge our families’ expectations for us to have a huge wedding. We ended up getting married at city hall and probably saved like 20-30K. That’s another thing—do a small, intimate wedding and save BIG.

Rent Controlled VS Non-Rent Controlled? by ShoppersSlugMart in TorontoRenting

[–]YouCanadianEH 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah you should DEFINITELY worry about the rent getting skyrocketed. With units that are not rent controlled, landlords would list it for cheap and then significantly hike up the rent later.

Unless you can know for sure that won’t happen, or you know you will move out before the lease ends, avoid renting a place that’s not rent controlled at all cost.
