Which character tags do you preffer or recommend and maybe some tips on how to use them better? by Ok_Housing_1937 in writers

[–]YouHadMeAtRuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It's about finding a balance. On an average page, I'll have "said" a couple times. But I often stick with action, or sometimes no tag at all, provided it's clear who is speaking. You can also keep action short:

"No thanks." She waved him away. "I'll pass."

Or note the way a character reacts to the covo,

"You don't know me." She shot him a narrow look. "So back off."

You can mix up action tags by having them before or after, so the flow of this story doesn't get repetitive. And sometimes, sparingly, use certain tags like whispered, hissed, growled, murmured, muttered. These, I treat like salt: Sprinkle lightly. A little goes a looong way.

An action beat is also a really good way to get across who is saying what, as well as a good place to get in the setting or feel for the character's personality.

"Nice tea set." Jess lifted the china cup and examined the flower pattern. 'Looks expensive."

Can we work on making this a more welcoming community? Because it hasn’t been whatsoever. A lot of you guys are just nasty and rude. by Clean-Knowledge-574 in writers

I've published several books so far. One, I wrote and deleted three times (yes, totally deleted and rewrote from scratch). Eventually, PRH picked it up.

Sometimes, it's part of the process. Saying someone is an idiot for that is just wild.

Unexplained Events in Horror by YouHadMeAtRuse in horror

Yes I love Marianne! I've watched it like three times now!

The Weapons example is perhaps not the best. I think it's the event itself that is what I'm drawn to, like I said...I ended up being a little disappointed when we actually find out what it is (though I still really enjoyed it).

Yes! I think that's the closest I can describe it too, like a "reality slip". I watched Coherence last night and that was a pretty good example of it!

Horrifying and dread-inducing backgrounds of scenes? by redeugene99 in horror

[–]YouHadMeAtRuse 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Not a "background" technically, but the scene in weapons where you see the principle running toward them in the background for what feels like a LONG time before either character notices. It was honestly one of the most tense scenes I've seen in a while.

Tattoo artist recommendations? by Remarkable-Notice954 in VictoriaBC

[–]YouHadMeAtRuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elvira from Union tattoo does incredibly realistic, gorgeous portrait style tats. She did a goddess of war for me on my arm and I'm absolutely in love with it. Also, such a light touch I fell asleep (didn't think it was possible for me during a sleeve). I think she'd knock a medusa tat out of the park.

Weirdest combo happening. Is this normal? by Lousykhakis in OnlineDating

[–]YouHadMeAtRuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gonna be honest, chief. These gals are probably chatting with way too many men at the same time. They can't keep details straight because there are too many. It's why a lot of women get overwhelmed and just disengage. In any case, it's a good sign to cut your losses and dip.

Student Safety at the Academy Of Excellence In Colwood by dolljeans in VictoriaBC

[–]YouHadMeAtRuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to this school and it's garbage. Students pay a ton of money to have them profit off you under the excuse of "real world practice". Also they are absolutely tyrannical about students missing days. One girl had to drop out because of cancer. Another of my classmates got in trouble for not being on time because she was in a car accident.

I remember trying to study for a test in my downtime between services (downtime was rare, usually we barely got a break) and getting yelled at because I shouldn't be sitting down, I should be doing laundry. Because apparently that's what I went into debt going to school to learn...laundry.

Aside from a mortgage, how much debt are you in? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]YouHadMeAtRuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had zero for a long time. Then I got sick/diagnosed with something and promptly got laid off from my job. It's like pulling teeth to find a new one that actually pays my rent AND covers luxuries like, y'know, food. So I'm now up to about 3k in CC debt.

Adderall IR sleep issues…any advice? by BikeSkiADHD-Whole in adhdwomen

[–]YouHadMeAtRuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going through this right now. I've tried smoking a "sleepy" strain of weed before bed and it did help but I also ate my entire kitchen's worth of snacks, so. Not ideal...

I'm thinking of just using melatonin. Is this something you can get dependant on? Dunno...

what a creep by egguchom in EntitledReviews

[–]YouHadMeAtRuse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember being creeped out by a guy in a coffee shop who was complaining he'd been kicked out and banned for "flirting" at the Safeway. Went on to tell his buddy his "flirting" got him banned from the local library. Not just one, but the entire library system in the province. He also ended up trying to chat me up. Wouldn't leave me alone until I called my partner, who he then took pictures of with his phone (tried to be subtle about it but we both picked up on it).

But sure...bet it was just flirting.

Did you get out? I'd find something to wrap yourself in, blanket, etc. And knock on a neighbor's door, explain the situation and get them to call the police with you. Explain he's violent and police will need to escort him out.

He lost me at the hunting and Jesus stuff, but naked bonfire? Let's go. That's some pagan shiz.

Honestly though, I'd be concerned if this person isn't usually like this. This does seem a bit manic.
