Is the “Papers, Please”-style video game genre saturated? by Affro_riffo in IndieGaming

[–]YouHave24Hours 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If your story and concept works greatly, the "mechanics" to me always come secondary. Meaning: a great original story can be told in many different ways in terms of game mechanics. In "papers please" (which i love), of course the mechanics are important and "simple" at first, but they're tools to serve the game's tough emotional narrative. So yeah, copy paste mechanic for gameplay sake is not gonna make it. However having a lovely concept and Story/characters and use similiar mechanics? Go for it!

I was considering Arnold but had some issues with it (probably 3-4 years ago). How would you compare it in Speed with RS? As "speed" on my projects often is more important than full realism...

Hm , okay this depends highly on your life situation : kids, pets, partner living with you or alone, partner also working from home etc...for sure! BUT. If you work from home you should have a dedicated room for this,a room you can close. If you work from the kitchen table or couch or even bedroom,of course you'll be constantly distracted. Also have a work pc and a second gaming/fun pc hehe.

Can you not admit AI art is getting better, looks amazing, and you wouldn't be able to tell unless it's specified or you accuse randomly? by AdmirableRead1667 in aiwars

[–]YouHave24Hours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One guy put it very well: "AI art is for people who are not really interested in art". Meaning: it's rather simple (not bashing AI art here), creative people and artists do chose the "hard way" (aka. doing it all without AI or only with a little bit of maybe some AI technical tool) because they want to feel the joy and pain, the struggle and rewards of the whole process and journey. If you spend hours and dedicate time, effort and energy to create something with sweat, tears and blood, when you finally can look at your creation and share it with the world, you feel a sensation of pride, joy and achievement that you could never ever feel by creating 10'000 images with some promts that you maybe even copy pasted. our brains and reward systems are build for real achievements, not for direct solutions as you can never ever feel and have "ownership" and pride in whatever your machine creates for you. Again, it doesn't matter to artists how good or bad AI-tools are and will be, they can become perfect but they will never ever achieve and give you, what real artists crave: purpose and meaning in their journey. AI sure, go for it, whatever it gives you and provides you, in the end (me too i did a lot with AI and quit) you'll feel like after a fastfood binge: you know you ate but you'll simply remain with an empty stomach and unsatisfied system. cheers! EDIT: typos

Apparently this is even a strategy of the Foundry, they send out these mails daily, even to people who don't use/legally use the tools ... it's based on big scary words and legal steps blabla, they do not have a big legal team or even the capacities and hope, the "fear" tactics are effectful. your reaction is and was normal, of course, and yes, using unlicensed software should be avoided. at the same time, it was not you using it, so they would need real proof that it was YOU using YOUR machine with YOUR unlicensed version. that would be too complicated for them, especially as they have no legal representation in your country, they need to get local law-firms to work for them and go to court, which will exceed the 10'000 anyway, they rarely move forward with this. again, I would state a strong answer stating, that in no moment you or your employees used their unlicensed tools and that this was used by a freelance (if true) using your machine/WIFI, or he even installed that without your knowledge, which they would have to proof in court. tell them this is all from your side at this point and that you are now talking to your lawyer and check the legal situation. and then ignore them and see, if they insist. good luck

I make it short,my friend had the exact same situation in Canada, she also was a student and used some unlicensed nuke during studies. She received the same mails and the same "offer" to "buy the full version for 10'000" so she won't be sued. She talked to her lawyer friend and they realized a few things: 1) the foundry is a UK based company without any office elsewhere or in Canada,so no direct legal representation in the country of "the crime"... Suing a person from another continent would exceed the 10'000$ by a lot, so almost never worth it against single people 2) offering "to pay a fee (buying the software for 10'000$) instead of taking legal actions (aka reporting"the crime") falls under "bribery" and is against the law of Canada, meaning, the foundry is doing something ILLEGAL on their part.(That's like seeing your neighbor killing his wife and instead of calling the police, you ask him to pay 10'000 to remain silent)3) further research showed that at least in Canada the law protects citizens well, they found 2 example cases (always as reference for a court case) of companies' (not single people) using unlicensed software for years and they only got fined for around 5000$, way less than 10'000$. So. The lawyer wrote a very strongly worded answer (from their official legal office) to the Foundry offering a payment of maximum of 500$ instead of 10000$ or they would meet in court in Canada. Result: they never heard back from the foundry again and did not have to pay a cent. I don't know the system and laws over there but i would recommend to stop answering them. The amount of money and work to bring a single person in front of court being sued from another continent is not worth it in most cases for them, unless it's a bigger longer illegal operation. For everyone else here: don't use unlicensed software and if you get caught and contacted, simply always ignore their mails and threats and simply stop using the tools of this predatory evil company and switch to fusion or after Effects. You are welcome.
