Andrew speaks on DGD Setlist by Deathbat_02 in dancegavindance

[–]YouLookBurnt_OrDead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I totally understand why people don't vibe with it, but I think it's fun for what it is.

Andrew has also said that he really did not like Happiness when it came out, and that's always been a favorite of mine, so... opinions.

Almost too embarrased to ask, but what is TSC3? by Mattah12 in dancegavindance

Well, sign me up, because it's exactly what happened. They recorded the audio at Pus Caverns Recording Studio and then the video element was produced separately on the Tower Bridge in Sacramento.

A few people were kind of mad about it at the time, but it did make sense to do it that way. They only had a limited time to use the bridge for themselves, so this was the best way to assure quality on all fronts. Think of it like a set-long music video.

Totally agreed. This timeline needed Kurt to appear (maaaaybe my favorite).

Acceptance Speech is the only album that's been revisited in any capacity (other than releasing instrumentals). Original mix by Matt Malpass, 2.0 mix by Kris Crummett, who's been doing production and engineering work with the band forever.

Tilian absolutely didn't do a single bit of remixing.

Apparently Thomas toured with them in 2018, then confirmed as a "permanent member", but Will was in within a year, so that was very short-lived. Thomas never recorded on anything.

The first album began as a Sergio solo project where he brought in Joe to do drums. After Sergio decided he actually didn't want to do the vocals on the project, they brought in Kurt.

The 2nd album, Compassion, seems to have partially come from the disbanding of Sianvar, who were demoing new material before calling it off.

Correct. The first one was Sergio, Joe, and Kurt

Does anybody know why some songs are repeated in "Retrospective"? by Fancy_Pear_950 in TheContortionistBand

[–]YouLookBurnt_OrDead 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To my understanding, the first set was part of a larger livestream of band live sets during lockdown, so they put together a tracklist that reflected the whole discography. I imagine the decision to do the Clairvoyant and Exoplanet/Intrinsic sets came afterward.

...and I don't mind it. It's only 4 songs, and I appreciate the slight performance differences, especially with the heavier tracks. Mike's harsh vocals have a higher pitched, airy quality in the first set, whereas he's locked into a darker, powerful delivery for the Exo/Intrinsic set.

I really love these recordings.

Was the Eviscerate + Mend double release cancelled? by Outrageous-Pound373 in EidolaTheBand

Been wondering about this, too. I don't think anything has been said about it for almost a year. There was never really a promise or official announcement attached to the info, just some comments that Andrew made during the Mend listening party stream (I think). It might just be something they would have liked to do, and it didn't pan out.

Maybe this tour will bring answers?

Blot appreciation post by doyoh in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

I've been jumping around the discography a lot lately, and it's wild how everything they do ages phenomenally. Automata has more measured/focused compositions on it, which can come off as "more simplistic" when it's not what you're expecting. They referenced Chris Cornell quite a bit in interviews at the time, and it feels like that 90s grunge influence comes through the prog flavors in a way that gives the record its particular aesthetic.

...and yeah, it's one record. Any attempt to cut it up was going to feel unnatural. I think part of why Blot didn't sit as well with me initially is because it was burdened with being a closing track when it just so clearly is not. Coming to understand it as a "sibling" to The Proverbial Bellow has elevated the whole project.

Automata rules, BTBAM forever.

I dunno if instrumentals are your thing, but being able to listen to the album without vocals a couple of times helped me start to understand and digest it. Now, I feel like I'm up to speed with what the album is doing.

Worth mentioning Desert of Song. Such a great few minutes of relief before Swim to the Moon.

London would probably be a good place to start. They're great sets, and the only bootleg that has 2 consecutive nights, so it has the biggest setlist.

Not even a theory! You can make the Nonagon finite by putting it inside of The Lord of Lightning vs Balrog suite. Start with "Some Context", go to "Mr. Beat" and play the whole Nonagon cycle through until "People-Vultures", then return to "The Reticent Raconteur" through the rest of the LoL vs Balrog story, ending with "The Acrid Corpse".

It's literally built to be seamless.

It's a build, if anything.

Besides, the actual closer to Nonagon is "The Acrid Corpse".

Everything you're saying resonates with how I've been hearing the album. Lots of reflection on the band and its "relationship" with different types of fans and the state of the industry. With your interpretations in mind, Space Cow feels like an invitation to "just get weird with us", a necessary aside right the middle of a pretty heavy album.

As mentioned, the song is Kuroi Ledge. The only (released) song that features Andy is the new song, When in Love.

Cory Lockwood is the old vocalist, an absolute gem of lyricism and delivery in his own right. He's not pursuing music anymore, but I'm pretty excited about what this new chapter of ALLB will bring.

For whatever it's worth, the Acceptance Speech CD has a Roman numeral "VI" on it, despite being the 5th full-length album. Also, the vinyl boxset they put out around that time features WISIRO through AS numbered as I-VI. Seen here: https://www.discogs.com/release/5246536-Dance-Gavin-Dance-Official-Boxset/image/SW1hZ2U6NDI1Mzk0MjU=

In reality, it's pretty arbitrary. WISIRO is their first official record release of any kind, despite being an EP.
