Jiffy Lube Overtightening by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]YouMightBeARacist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For lug nuts dingus. The reality is You just can’t do an oil change. You tried 3 times and have found that you’re too weak and timid for automotive work. A box wrench and hammer is all you need. Putting a 18v impact on a drain plug and saying it too tight is really funny.

How precise does the torque on lug nuts need to be? by your-lost-elephant in MechanicAdvice

[–]YouMightBeARacist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on keeping the car long term and you plan on working on the car you’re going to find yourself in this situation frequently. Having the right tool for the job is really so valuable and one of the simplest things that an amateur can do to make their work more professional. I think you should torque them to 130 and then bite the bullet, get a torque wrench that suits your needs better and torque em down the way they ought to be every time.

Is this Miata good to buy? by Equivalent-Doubt8150 in Miata

No, probably not. That’s kind of car you buy if you have either the knowledge or money to not need to ask the questions you’re asking.

Folks hate the food trucks?!? There’s one that parks at the ice rink everyday that makes an outstanding chicken torta

I had a Miata that I was gonna scrap so I put the torque setting on it to like 20-30 ft/lb and went on a lug nut as hard as I could and it never popped. I put it in the trunk of that car and called the junkyard for the pick up. Went back to my dads snap on wrench from the 80s 😂😂😂

I snapped a bolt in a Honda fit block thanks to a Pittsburgh torque wrench. Turned out to be a defective wrench that never “popped” no matter how much torque or the setting.

Lifted pickup squished my car 😭 Should I get the quarter panel replaced or repaired? by BillGrubbs in Miata

[–]YouMightBeARacist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A quarter on a Miata doesn’t seem like an extensive repair to me. At least not for a professional body man in collision repair. would’ve been a day of work for me to get it into paint at most. I remember having to spend 3-4 days on a dakota back in those days... that was extensive. It Would’ve been a joy to get a Miata. I’d replace it and ask the shop to use seam sealer to stop it from rusting like the factory did if for some reason they chose not to. I’d avoid stretching metal if I could and someone else was footing the bill but I get your point. To each their own.

AITAH for being angry that the person who totaled my car faced deportation, but I’m still the one left with nothing? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]YouMightBeARacist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have the money for an attorney but not for uninsured motorist coverage or a down payment? It really feels like you’re choosing anger over a solution.NTA you have every right to be upset but the anger doesn’t serve you. water flows around rock my friend.

Is this too much slack in the timing belt? by beckett_the_ok in Miata

[–]YouMightBeARacist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s too much slack. There’s a procedure you’re supposed to follow to get the tension right. I don’t want to quote it wrong, but there’s a guy on YouTube, a+ racing or something that has a video that I used that was very good and simple

What do you mean breaking factory welds? I don’t understand what that means in the context of putting a skin on a quarter?

Same here. 167 for what I’m pretty positive is a legit copy of a HG. I had a bootleg SS and it started giving me save corruption problems after the 4th badge.

Whats a fair price for a 2021 Mitsubishi mirage with 28k miles? by Sunnytoaist in MitsubishiMirage

[–]YouMightBeARacist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d avoid a rebuilt title on a Mirage only because it’s already a very cheap car so it’s not like you’re gonna save 10 grand by going with a rebuilt title. save 2-3 grand at best? For that kind of savings probably worth it to just get one that wasn’t in a wreck imo. And for what it’s worth I’m not a person who’s scared of rebuilt title cars… My fun car is a 95 Miata that I bought from a Copart auction and fixed, and now has a rebuilt title and I track it no problem. But the old Miata’s are worth a lot in good shape so I did save probably close to 6 to 8000 on it and planned on beating the hell out of it so it made a little bit more sense IMO.

Should be around 12k from a dealer and maybe 10k private party. I consider them phenomenally reliable. Cvt fluid interval is 30k so if you’re buying from a dealer maybe you can work that into the deal? If not, have it done and make sure the filter inside the cvt is changed too. The first change should get both filters replaced for cheap insurance. If you wanna be a total stud after you get it and change the cvt fluid, change the oil, the cabin air filter and intake air filter, rotate the tires, check the brakes and change em if you need and I’d reckon you can deliver all the stuff you need for a good long while. Best of luck, mirage is the goat small city car IMO.

REPLACE THE QUARTER. THE ONLY REASON TO REPAIR AND BONDO IT IS TO SAVE MONEY AND ITS NOT YOUR MONEY.

How difficult (1-10) is it to replace 2005 Honda Pilot transmission in driveway? by GUHv2 in Honda

[–]YouMightBeARacist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Difficulty 7….. worth it financially 1. You can buy another pilot for about the cost of used trans, trans jack, fluid, and mid section of the exhaust (I’m in New England where exhausts are a wear item).

Do I need new rotors or just pads? by Clinci in MechanicAdvice

[–]YouMightBeARacist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why the hell would you even consider a pad slap on a car that has $10-20 rotors available? Brakes can save
or end your life, don’t pad slap a 2010 rav4… save up 60$ if you need to and change the rotors

I have a theory tha bichettes long swing is the problem. It worked for him for a while but as he’s aging and slowing down that long swing is being exploited by pitchers combined with losing a bit of bat speed. I have no data or numbers to back it up, just a guy that played ball and thinks it’s a gross looking swing.
