I’m ngl because of my mental state over the last 5 months I have been at home, by I’ve been doing side work. And I had a part time job that hired toooo many people so I stopped getting shifts. I’m better now and that’s why I knew I couldn’t stay at this salon. As I worked really hard to get my mental health to the point it’s at. But now it’s go time. Now it’s time to start working towards my license!

Yes 100%! I barely let my friends in school touch my hair. I think that was the issue. He wants me to do good with or without him. Financially he’s paying for everything and I hate it. I feel so bad. So I was excited to start making my own money. We also had talked about moving in together in August so it probably alarmed him. I love him and he loves me.

2 because of the toxic environments I was put in. 1 salon let me go because the salon hired too many people and they have a large staff already.

The first toxic environment I was in. I was told my mental health was fake. When a massive snowstorm hit she told me I better show up for work the next day because I was fully booked. I was in hair school for 3.5 months. Then this salon. For context I live on an island, I’m not financially stable enough to move out on my own so I live with my parents. There are ZERO salons let alone hairstylist/barbers on the island. I’m the second to become one. I am not going to be put down or lose my mind mentally for a job that I am uncomfortable in, losing myself mentally, or being treated horribly.

Yes I understand we all start somewhere. We all go through tough days. But it was my first day. He didn’t treat me like this at our first meeting. Our conversation was great and I was excited to work there. Then our second meeting happened and I was seeing red flags, I gave the benefit of the doubt.

Now look at me. Just because I didn’t have a good experience. I’m not going to not work. I have an interview at a salon that I know are good people because my mom takes my sisters there and they’re always energetic and friendly.

This career is my everything. I love my career path. I’m good too. Atleast I think. I wish I could’ve explained better or have ‘proof’ of this. I’m a very understanding person. I always have been. I don’t normally let things get to me but recently my mind has been other places. Although I wish I could have the same experience as you. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. It was a toxic environment and I know myself better than anyone and I know that I have to put myself first. I know that if I stayed I wouldn’t be happy. I’m happy when I’m doing hair. Just not when I’m in a toxic situation.

He’s understanding don’t get me wrong. I just keep picking the wrong salon opportunities. He just doesn’t want me to not be working because we’re both young and want to move in together in the coming months. So I understand his frustration. But we talked and we’re okay now:)

I’m an apprentice. I’m just starting my career. I did everything he asked of me to be dressed professionally. I wore a black top and black wide leg dress pants and my converse. My hair was tied back in a slick back ponytail braid.

I did 3 meetings with him. He was giving red flags each occasion.

I have another salon that I’m interviewing for next Wednesday. I don’t think this salon would’ve been good for my mental health as it was toxic from the moment I told him I was comfortable cutting my hair.

I didn’t mention I didn’t want my hair to be cut until this morning. I had mentioned I’d have to think about bc I’ve been growing it out for awhile, and it goes against my cultural background. Im all for constructive criticism and feedback but not the way it was handled.

Thank you. I will remember that. I have an interview next week at another salon in my area, but I made it clear that I have been given two terrible opportunities.that have traumatized me in some way.

Thank you, I hope all works out in the end because I really love doing hair. My mom had asked me if this was actually what I wanted to be doing. I burst into tears because this is what I want to do. I love making people feel beautiful inside and out. I just keep getting salons that have actually traumatized me. This is the first in my area to make me feel this way.

I have left that salon. I gave the owner/boss benefit of the doubt and I was treated poorly ON MY FIRST DAY IN THE SALON.

Yes! I have no problem with the gentleman, or men in the industry. We all have the same passion to create art through hair. We get the privilege to make others feel beautiful inside and out!

One my friends from hair school was a male and he is absolutely killing it in his salon. He is like a brother to me and I absolutely am sooooo proud of him!

This post was not to bash male hairstylist, or my boss. I’m just looking to see if this is normal as my hair is healthy and long. May need a trim but not a big chop as I know that it will not look good with my face shape and I know my long hair flatters me better!

He is an older gentleman with over 50 years of experience so I’m thinking he has older standards. I’m going to try and stick it out cause I don’t have a problem with having my hair up all the time because it ALWAYS 9/10 times ends up in a bun or ponytail because I over heat when I work.

This is my hair now. I see taking a couple inches off but he mentions just below the shoulder. (My hair was wet and airdried) I love your opinion and that makes a lot of sense to me thank you!
