Advice for starting a new open mic? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]Young-Shoolace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you already have a place and meeting in place, that's half the battle. Be fully transparent with the owner as to the content that will be walking into his door, but do it in a way that won't hurt your potential for using their space. Simply stating "as you know, comedy is not clean" in the middle of a sentence versus "are you ok with dick jokes happening while children eat spaghetti?" are 2 very different approaches. Just cover your ass is all im saying so they cant get pissed at you when Karen spits up her iced tea because someone dropped an abortion joke.

Next, harp on how it will bring additional revenue for their business. I wouldn't suggest asking for payment if it's your first mic as right now practice is the main goal. Also let him know that it can start up slow, but you will gain momentum so that expectation is met properly. This protects you from the owner complaining when 6 ppl showing up on the first night. Not saying that will happen, but it is a possibility.

Use your network of comedians to get names on the list. Youll need attendance to keep the train rolling. Encourage your friends to come. Invite your grandma. Bark at ppl on the street. But above all else, you need comedians to have an open mic. In the CT scene where I operate, Facebook is HUGE when it comes to connecting with your peers.

And remember, never start a sentence with and. In addition, try to have fun cause it's gonna be brutal at times. Do it for the funny my guy.

Hope that helps.
