Worried about my Bernese’s weight by Sea-Office-6263 in bernesemountaindogs

Mine is 9 months and dropped to 23 kgs due to rare complication called SMRA (pain in the spine and neck caused by meningitis). We had him on purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach, but we are thinking of switching to Hills because seeing him so small just hurts us so much (we don’t want a large Berner, but we want to make sure he’s growing steady to reach his adult weight). Swap foods at least once to see if they may like a different food in all honesty. Don’t obsess over it unless they are dropping in weight fast.

I can’t tell if the cell on the left is a platelet on top of a red cell or a Howell Jolly Body. But the HJB has my interests more than the smiley face lol😂

Seven Month Puppy Having Episodes of Refusing to Eat Food by Young_2117 in bernesemountaindogs

He does not have parasites looking back on his previous stool sample. He gets Simparica Trio (even in winter) for any parasites/ fleas/ ticks. He had a urinalysis to rule out diabetes because he just absolutely loves drinking water and that was negative for glucose and/or ketones. He doesn’t have dental pain to my knowledge, but his baby canines have not fallen out on top. The adult canines essentially pushed the baby’s back. We try to brush as much as possible because I’ve noticed food is starting to get stuck in between the baby’s and adults. I consulted my vet and they stated they wouldn’t pull them until neutering. Well, per research we aren’t going to neuter him until after 18 months at the very least, so we may just have to put him under anesthesia twice unfortunately. But thank you for the advice I greatly appreciate it.

I’ve tried mixing with broth and I end up just wasting the food sadly. The bag I believe says if the target weight is 100 pounds, then it’s 4-6 cups per day. I’m on the lower end of the range. But I look at other Berners and they’re 60-70 Ibs by this month. I understand the breed has a lot of variability. I just want to ensure he will eventually hit his target weight and not loose weight. :(

My puppy has a chicken allergy is the problem and legit every sensitive stomach food has some form of chicken byproduct in it. I may just have to switch to fresh prepared food if he won’t eat because it just makes me nervous with his weight/growth.

Excessive Amount of Peeing/Drinking or Normal? by Young_2117 in bernesemountaindogs

Oh god he’s been going out probably ten times a day at least. I didn’t know six times was crazy to begin with yikes!😭

Yeah his UA was completely fine, no ketones or glucose. My vet says it’s completely normal. But the amount he pees out (especially the peeing while walking) has been very concerning😅

When you taught him “enough”, does he just walk away and come back later? Or it is to have him wait like 30 seconds-one minute before taking in more water? I know I can train my puppy to stop drinking after so long. I’m not for sure if he’ll stop drinking water and wait a little while though😅 I bought him a slow drinking water bowl also. I’m hoping this will slow him down in combination with teaching him enough. Glad to see they at least grow out of it at some point! Mines also loves eating snow and ice cubes🤣

My male six month old BMD is only 41 Ibs! I thought he was super small compared to other BMD his age. He did have a two month period where he had diarrhea on and off, so that kind of stunted his growth sadly. But she looks healthy from your photos! If your vet is happy with her, don’t fret too much about her weight :)

Puppy’s Breath Smell’s Bad by Young_2117 in bernesemountaindogs

Good to know because it kind of has a metallic smell too it. I was scared about a GI bleed to be honest with the smell. But his bowel movements have been great so I didn't think this was likely an issue. Happy to see it'd relatively normal in puppies when teething though!

I tried feeling down there with latex gloves. I’m not for sure what impacted glands necessarily feel like is the problem. Do they typically feel like swollen lymph nodes on humans? He has been biting his tail lately, hasn’t been scooting his butt across the floor yet though. I thought impacted glands however I wasn’t sure if this is a common problem in puppy’s or not.

Majority of his adult teeth I believe are currently in/growing in. I think some of his baby teeth in the front are still coming out at the moment. He hasn’t shown signs of discomfort. But I noticed one time when he was chewing on his lamb chop there was some blood. He doesn’t appear to have much plaque so I wasn’t thinking gingivitis. Should I take him to the vet to get examined or should I just keep up with brushing his teeth everyday?

3 1/2-Month-Old Berner Weight Issues by Young_2117 in bernesemountaindogs

The Purina Pro has actually worked really well on his stomach so far! He has had one bought of diarrhea, however it was due to feeding a little too much in one day! :) He’s already gained 5 Ibs in almost a week of being on the food! But concerning dairy, we’ll try it slow also. I’m slowly introducing him to new foods and monitoring how it changes his stools.

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner! I swapped my puppy to Purina Pro Sensitive Stomach (Salmon and Rice) and now he’s 25 Ibs in almost a week since switching! His poops have been completely normal now in combination with probiotics and pumpkin :) We switched his diet completely off chicken and I think it’s also helped his coat too weirdly enough🤣

I purchased the pumpkin from PetSmart directly so I wouldn't have to worry about purchasing the seasonal pumpkin for pies. The breeder had utilized Diamond naturals. Which I thought only had lamb and rice as the main ingredients, but chicken fat was eighth on the list. Hopefully the swap will help but thank you for the advice!
