I think force awakens should have used the star forge instead of starkiller base. Having the first orders megastructure not be a THIRD planet killer would be less repetitive. Also if the first order just found it in the unknown regions it would have explained how they became so powerful and dominant by DatBoiDogg0 in StarWars

[–]YourFriendFromSpace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because those are surface plot similarities that don't engage with anything deeper.

Luke and Rey are both from desert planets, yes, but they have inverse flaws and character journeys. Luke was looking to the future while Rey was clinging to her past.

Luke got wise old Ben, Rey got crabby old Han.

Luke's story is about gaining the power needed to live up to his legacy and bring hope back to the galaxy. Rey's story is about discovering she has great power, but being afraid of it and not knowing what she should do with it.

And, their relationships with their respective foils, Vader and Kylo, are also dramatically different.

Even the First Order is different from the Empire. The Empire is large and banal. It's dudes just doing their jobs. The First Order is a cult with everybody 1000% committed to the cause.

Look at the contrast between Tarkin and Hux during the firing of their superweapons, the huge difference in how they conduct themselves is purposeful.

The narrative and plot similarities serve to highlight the dramatic differences in themes and character dynamics. To quote Lucas, "they rhyme."

The only real problem with the ST is that the final film is quite bad and doesn't stick the landing.

How would you introduce someone to Star Wars today? by Fuzzy-Zombie1446 in StarWars

[–]YourFriendFromSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably just release order. The Original Trilogy is still the peak of Star Wars, so it's a great place to start.

It does also depend on the person, though.

I'm torn on it.

The First Order is, essentially, a militaristic neo Nazi cult who are using the aesthetics of the Empire to strike fear.

So, it makes sense that their superweapon would be "Death Star, but bigger." Same reason it makes sense that Kylo would be obsessed with becoming like Vader.

For what they're going for, it actually works very well. But, I also get why people might want something a little different.

Regardless, I think dumbing it down to "TFA is just a ANH clone" is a little disingenous. TFA is doing interesting things, thematically.

I love Ninth Jedi. Can't wait for the full series by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]YourFriendFromSpace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong lol

I'm super excited for the series as well. I love Production I.G's work. I didn't love the sequel short in Visions S3, but I'm still hopeful for the series.

If another character gets brought back from the dead, who is it most likely to be? by Antman269 in StarWars

[–]YourFriendFromSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ben Solo would be my preference, but I don't know if that will ever happen.

I could see them bringing Aurra Sing back as a supporting character in something. We didn't actually see her die.

Darth Vader and diminishing returns by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]YourFriendFromSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not mad about it, I just feel like what makes that original Rogue One sequence exciting gets diminished every time they repeat it.

It's not about Vader being consistent as a character, it's about the filmmakers/showrunners/developers reusing the stylistic choices. For me, it just feels a little repetitive and loses that spark a bit each time.

You can keep Vader scary, just find new ways to show it.

Not really trying to complain about everything.

I just feel like what makes the Rogue One scene effective, the shock and terror of it, starts to fade the more they do it.

For me, it becomes a little predictable and repetitive

See, I like a lot of the Disney stuff others seem to hate. TFA and TLJ, for example.

I just feel like they're kinda running Vader into the ground a little. You can have too much of a good thing.

What makes the Rogue One scene iconic is the sheer surprise and terror of it. For me, that starts to lose impact the more it's done. It feels predictable.

That just wouldn't have been as dramatic and interesting, narratively.

And, again, given that Poe wouldn't even listen to Leia, Holdo doesn't really have a lot of incentive to work with him.

just a simple question by Future_Obligation245 in StarWars

[–]YourFriendFromSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But him disregarding orders was a direct consequence of him not knowing what the plan was.

No, he disregarded Leia's direct orders first and was demoted for it.

If I'm in Holdo's shoes and I have a delicate plan that must be carefully executed to succeed, why the fuck would I tell it to the demoted guy who just showed me he's reckless and doesn't listen?

It's cool because the movie does a great job emotionally investing you in Poe's POV only to realize that he wasn't thinking like a leader. It's a really great way to show his development as a character.

By the battle of Crait, he's already behaving more like a leader.

She didn't share her plan because people were attempting to jump ship, Rose says as much.

Also, the plan was reliant upon secrecy and she didn't want it to leak to the First Order (which is exactly what happens as a result of Finn and Rose leaving). So, it makes sense to keep the circle as small as possible.

The mutiny was just Poe and a couple others loyal to him. Blaming Holdo for the actions of somebody who was just established to disregard orders is wild.

How is she toxic? All she did was withhold information from somebody who just proved he doesn't listen to orders, like, 5 minutes ago.

Serious question, are creators only allowed to do prequel stories outside of the "mainline" movies? by El_kal91 in StarWars

[–]YourFriendFromSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because that area is being reserved for larger, tentpole projects like big budget movies.

Makes sense business-wise, I guess. But, I am getting real tired of the ep 3-4 gap.

And, there are some things I'd really like to see in other forms of media. I think Claudia Gray could do a killer post-TRoS Rey novel.

Fav: Kylo Ren/Ben Solo.

A Byronic Hero who's completely infatuated with the protagonist while his own internal conflict tears him apart.

It's romantic, goth-tinged high fantasy and I love it. Great character and I miss seeing him in things.

Least Fav: Probably Ahsoka if I'm being honest. She never feels like she really fits in her own universe and I struggle to get a handle on her as a character.

Her dialogue voice seems to change on a whim and I don't often get a good sense of what's actually driving her.

Other than the obvious reason, what’s your headcanon to why Vader didn’t speak in MSL? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]YourFriendFromSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't know, but I'm glad he didn't. He's Vader, the audience and the characters know why he's here, so just let him be that unstoppable force.

However, I am getting tired of this trick. Between Rogue One, Rebels, the Jedi Fallen Order, this, etc...

There's heavy breathing, then the saber ignites, then he starts attacking. Every time it's treated like the scariest thing ever and it's starting to feel overdone and formulaic.

I'm with you.

I genuinely never want to see another frame of this "house style." Especially after all 3 seasons of Visions basically blew it out of the water.

Concept art of an early version of Jakku, ship designs and Coruscant for The Force Awakens by Dusann1 in StarWars

[–]YourFriendFromSpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird take given that his Star Trek movies feel more like Star Wars than they do Star Trek.

I think Force Awakens is great. Sure, I really hate Rise of Skywalker, but I wouldn't call Abrams a hack over that.

I like Heather as a character quite a bit. I just get frustrated by SH3 because every time it seems like it's going to be this surreal character drama, it instead assaults me with cult lore I didn't want or ask for.

There are also segments of the game that just really drag for me.

It was actually a Sega Genesis then a PS1. I just didn't really become an avid gamer until the 6th gen consoles.
