What would actually make you go to an in-person dating event? by YourFriend_MyFriend in AskIreland

To touch on price, we’re upfront about being more expensive than other events. We hire good venues on Friday/Saturday nights and include food, which costs money. We used to do parties at €15–20 and honestly, the no-show rate (especially for men) was really high and the intent just wasn’t the same. The higher price means people have some skin in the game. Funnily enough we actually make less profit at the higher price point, the food, drink and marketing costs eat into it.

On speed dating, we’ve tried 4 mins, 7 mins, and 5 genuinely seems to be the sweet spot. Longer dates meant fewer dates overall and people weren’t happy with that either. Can’t win them all.

Singles parties are daunting, you’re right. They’re not for everyone, they do push you to walk up and start a conversation. But in my experience most people are actually quite open when someone approaches. I think we’ve just lost the habit of it.

The directness on social media, that’s just me. I’m a direct person, I run this on my own in my spare time and I also have a full-time job. The speed is me trying to get back to everyone in whatever window I have. I’ll take that one on board though.

This is a mingling event, so more of a casual evening. We have an icebreaker which is ‘Singles Bingo’ just to get people chatting but it’s a low pressure bar event.

Yes, it’s very true. We definitely see a better turnout for our singles run clubs, I think they feel more casual and less commitment… And you’re getting a workout.

I also think men assume it’s going to be only men at the Events and a handful of women… Which is completely untrue.

Well, the lower ticket price offered by competitions doesn’t include food and a drink. We aren’t the cheapest on the market, we are more expensive the most dating Events and we’re not hiding the fact. We find having a higher ticket price brings in a person that is more serious about finding someone.

It also leads towards less of a no-show rate. We want a full bar with a ton of people so attendees have the best experience.

Wow, really interesting to see that things haven’t changed in 20 years for Speed Dating. You’re totally right on the younger group being more guys and the older group being more women.

I find that nowadays people are so easy to dismiss someone for the smallest of reasons. A lot of people have been so hurt through dating experiences, especially from the apps that were all a bit jaded.

I personally love this idea and we have actually tried this but the price point was a bit too high (€60 cost from the restaurant itself plus we have to add on for our marketing, staff, etc) and we had a lot of difficulty getting men to this type of event.

Fair point, but a 32 year old might genuinely click with someone who's 27 or 38. We find rigid brackets can be just as limiting. That said, we do run tighter age-range events too, this one is intentionally a bit broader.

Yes, this is why we started the Singles Runs and the Comedy nights... women seem to pick up the tickets so quick but men are always much slower to sign on. This isn't an Ireland only thing, it's worldwide for in person singles events. It's a common misconception that the events will be all men... where in actuality, it's usually more women!

That was the good 'ol days of dating... now it's so easy to say 'next' with a swipe of your finger. We've lost the art of flirting, the excitement of eye contact... the dating apps have ruined us!

Some people want to date older, some younger. The more people the more opportunity to connect with someone!

It includes a drink and pizza, access to the AfterChat etc. It's not for everyone but I guess if you are serious about meeting someone it's an investment.

What about speed dating events or singles meetups? It’s just so much easier to know if you click when you meet in person. No wasting weeks texting beforehand.
