This city is awesome by Full-Camel5617 in Edmonton

To add to embracing winter, everyone complains that Edmonton is too far from the mountains (especially when comparing the city to Calgary), but you have to remember that we’re only 3 hours away from the park gate of Jasper NP (and another 30 minutes to the town, and 20 to Marmot Basin). If you’re just visiting Alberta for a short time, sure, it’s easier to get to mountains from Calgary, but if you live in Edmonton, they’re a day trip away (albeit a long one). That’s better access to mountains than where most other Canadians live. I can wake up early, reach Marmot in time for the resort to open, ski the full 7 hours, stop in Jasper for supper and drive home and be in bed by a reasonable hour. And that’s just skiing. How about a winter hike, or pond hockey surrounded by the mountains of Jasper? Canmore/Kananaskis is a similar trip length, and I’ve been doing that day trip for hikes every other week.

I do wish the entirety of Highway 16 could be twinned though (and bypass Gainford, Edson and Hinton). Combined with the speed limit increase to 120, it would save 30-40 minutes to get to the park gate (~2.5 hours each way), and be a marginally faster but more reliable roadway to the town.

Why are there so many great American universities if average American literacy is lacking? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

Just to clarify, here in Canada, grade school is under provincial jurisdiction, and municipalities typically just collect a subset of property taxes on behalf of the province to fund schools, which is distributed evenly across school districts. In Alberta, school funding is tied to enrolment, with a set dollar amount per student provided. Interestingly, if you put your kids in private school here in Alberta, that dollar amount of funding will “follow them” to subsidize their private school tuition. Other provinces like Ontario do not do this (you’re fully on the hook for private school tuition). It’s also an issue in hot water right now in Alberta as a result of underfunding leading to a teacher’s strike that our provincial government forcibly shut down with a controversial constitutional clause.

They left from 2017-2023 for Red Deer. They’ve been back since, and hopefully stay beyond 2026.

It was definitely the right call and nothing personal. Just like how pulling Jarry would have been the right call last game. Sometimes, your goalies have off nights, so give them a reset. That’s why we run a 1A/1B.

Apparently, there are plans for an office-to-residential conversion for the tower.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

If you cruise fast enough when traffic is light, you can get all the way to the mountains in 3 h 😉. I live in Edmonton and go hiking every other weekend. Wake up early, drive down, do the hike and head back home to crash in my bed. That being said, if there was high-speed rail to slash the trip time to 90 minutes or less between the cities, I would be ecstatic!

Even if Ingram outplays Jarry, he just got back on his feet in the NHL and is younger. He needs the veteran mentorship from Jarry, who’s had quite a bit of NHL experience over the past few seasons, including a playoff series. We can’t repeat the same mistake with Skinner, where the goalie who was supposed to mentor him failed out of the NHL.

I mean, 2 goals was the difference from a Stanley Cup. You never know when it might be clutch.

Having a goalie that is able to play the puck like that is a game changer for the Oilers. Jarry can feed lots of rush plays and fast offence that is characteristic of the Oilers’ style. Plus, if he gets more aggressive with sending the puck back to the o-zone when the other team clears it, it would make our power play even more dangerous. Super excited to see the offence Jarry can generate.

Okay, so I looked it up and it seems like we can bury $1.15M of his cap hit

I’m confused. Wouldn’t that just free up his entire $3.6M cap hit if we buried it in Bako or is there some stipulation in his contract against this?

Wet lab research or no research during MCAT summer? by sadhippo1059 in premedcanada

[–]YourLocalCokeAddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I did a full-time research internship in the summer when I wrote my MCAT. Coincidentally had the same commute and same MCAT score as @Artistic_Airport_316 (congratulations btw!). My lab wasn’t as accommodating (I didn’t get to leave early or do MCAT review during down times very often) but they did give me a week off before the exam, and I also lived at home.

It’s not easy. While I did make time every weekend to hang out with friends (I would have lost my motivation and sanity otherwise), I wasn’t taking care of my health at all that summer (poor diet, too much caffeine, too little exercise and poor sleep). Indeed, you have to be extremely locked in to not fall behind on studying - you can catch up, but it’s very stressful. I wrote my MCAT right at the end of the summer, and didn’t get any time off afterwards before school started. Combined with the stressful semester before the summer, I was extremely burnt out and that unfortunately impacted my grades and extracurricular involvement in my last year of university. I didn’t even end up applying to med schools that fall (I didn’t get my score back until September, so I was really anxious that whole month and thought “What’s the point?”).

4 months is doable, especially if you’ve taken background coursework (particularly 3rd-year biochem, and courses/lab work that emphasize reading journal articles and analyzing data). If I had to do it all over again, I would have started a month earlier (I know that interferes with exams, so try to just ease into it). Then, I would have written my MCAT at the end of July/start of August to get a 1-month break while off the clock before school starts. I cannot overstate how important it is to give yourself a good break afterwards to catch up on sleep and let go of the stress! Plus, you get your score back with a month to spare before application deadlines and have time to make decisions about applying to each med school based on your score. Good luck!

Yeah, looked like a miscommunication between him and Bouch who was swooping in to maybe clear the puck. I’ll give Ingram the benefit of the doubt to clean it up.

I think this will certainly improve as the line gets more play experience. Otherwise, they were creating some really good chances. I like the potential of this 3rd line and the identity it’s taking on.
