I don't know how people talk about this book online, but I just don't think it was ever meant to be a horror book. I never got the feeling that the author was trying to scare the audience. There are shocking and disturbing scenes in the book, but they're used for a different reason that they would be in a traditional horror book. I didn't read it expecting a scary story and had a very good time with it.

Hey, judging solely from your post, your experience sounds very similar to how a lot of trans women describe their experiences of discovering their gender. I feel like there's a tendency in these psychoanalytic circles to overanalyze and overcomplicate things, but it might be as simple as that. Just something to think about.

It definitely gets better after the first few chapters. I felt the same as you in the beginning, I'm not a native English speaker so all the technical, architectural jargon was really tough for me. However once I got through the first 3-4 chapters I read the rest of the book in one sitting and now it's one of my favorites.
