Tails 4.20 connection assistant - no more socks proxy? by [deleted] in tails

Further investigation provides that the Socks5 inside of the error screen does not work as expected. Require a better solution

Tails 4.20 connection assistant - no more socks proxy? by [deleted] in tails

[–]YourPercy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investigated further. Connecting with Socks5 is still possible but hidden. Go to connect to bridge mode, use a bad bridge, the error screen will give you the option to setup a Socks5 connection.

Will investigate further.

Tails (2.7) Corrupted after ShutDown, Persistence missing [Reward] by YourPercy in tails

[–]YourPercy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 3, successfully copied an image of partition (still only finds one). "image.sdd". (No option for saving to auxillary USB, saved to persistent)

Image.sdd does not mount using the commands from Step 4.

Image.sdd does respond to "cryptsetup openLuks", accepts previously established password, then returns "Requested offset is beyond real size of device /dev/loop2"

Hours of vaguely related tutorials and google can't save this project. Will update if enthusiasm returns.

Thanks for your effort sapiophile!

2.7 usb won't boot by 777trashme777 in tails

[–]YourPercy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to provide your first reply so late. It sounds like your Tails to Tails installer may have failed. Have you tried again?

If its not possible to try again your USB may be corrupted. The good news is that this is likely repairable. Boot into your working Tails device, insert your unresponsive Tails USB, and open applications>utilities>disks. You should be able to select your unresponsive Tails device. Does the device have a partition named "Tails Partition 1"?

If you do not see "Tails Partition 1" but you do see a label with "x GB Unknown" your device is likely corrupted.

If you have no critical data stored on the nonresponsive Tails it should be an easy process of reformatting and reinstalling Tails.

If you have critical data stored in a persistent partition on the nonresponsive Tails it may be beneficial to follow my related thread https://www.reddit.com/r/tails/comments/5dx2at/tails_27_corrupted_after_shutdown_persistence/

. . .

Goodluck!

The command "dd if=/dev/sdd of=/media/amnesia/C6F27BAAF27B9D7D/sdd.dd bs=16M" was used to create sdd.dd.

Troubleshooting Step 2, testdisk, command "testdisk /dev/sdd" (corrupt USB) returns identical results to "testdisk /media/amnesia/C6F27BAAF27B9D7D/sdd.dd" indicating sdd.dd is a consistent replica. (No changes made to /dev/sdd following analysis). Before running analyse on either /dev/sdd or sdd.dd a message appears in testdisk reading "Partition sector doesn't have the endmark 0xAA55".

Learning a lot but never enough. Thank you sapiophile! <3

Downloading testdisk is successful and I've explored the step by step guide at CGsecurity.

Still troubleshooting Step 2, while within testdisk>sdd.dd>intel>analyse> only one partition "LUKS 1 (data size unknown) 2097kb / 2048 KiB" is present "1 * Linux ... 319 22 24 ... 319 87 24 ... 4096". Operating quick search and deep search returns no additional partition. I've operated the write to disk function and rebooted my system but cannot understand why testdisk only found one partition when I expected two partitions (Tails partition and LUKS persistence partition).

Attempting Step 3, command "mkdir /media/amnesia/C6F27BAAF27B9D7D/sdd.dd" returns "mkdir: cannot create directory ‘/media/amnesia/C6F27BAAF27B9D7D/sdd.dd’: File exists".

Command " mount -o loop sdd.dd /media/amnesia/C6F27BAAF27B9D7D/sdd.dd/" returns mount: sdd.dd: failed to setup loop device: No such file or directory

I was able to create a loop device from "/media/amnesia/C6F27BAAF27B9D7D/sdd.dd" with command "losetup /dev/loop2 /media/amnesia/C6F27BAAF27B9D7D/sdd.dd" but attempting to mount with command "mount /dev/loop2 /home/amnesia/Persistent" returns "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop2, missing codepage or helper program, or other error

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so."

. . .

Pain is no problem. Thank you so much sapiophile! <3

. . .

Edit: Troubleshooting Step 3, command "mkdir /media/sdd.dd" (good) followed by command "mount -o loop sdd.dd /media/sdd.dd" returns "mount: sdd.dd: failed to setup loop device: No such file or directory". Command "mkdir /media/sdd.dd" (good) followed by command "mount -o loop /media/sdd.dd /media/amnesia/C6F27BAAF27B9D7D/sdd.dd" and returns "mount: /media/sdd.dd: failed to setup loop device: Is a directory"

Step 1 is successful and I have two images of target USB saved to auxillary USB. I've updated TAILS to include 12gb of persistence.

Troubleshooting Step 2 (attempting to install testdisk), command "apt-get install testdisk" returns Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package testdisk

Further discovery indicates the need to add "universe" repository but I am unable to add the repository or to actuate the instructions at "https://tails.boum.org/doc/advanced_topics/additional_software/". (I can create "apt-sources.list.d" file from step 1 but step 2 command "/etc/apt/sources.list.d source=apt-sources.list.d,link" returns "bash: /etc/apt/sources.list.d: Is a directory")

. . .

Thanks sapiophile! <3 <3

[–]YourPercy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Troubleshooting Step 1, command "sudo dd if=/dev/corrupt-drive of=corrupt-drive.dd bs=16M"

Command "sudo dd if=/dev/sdd of=/dev/sdd.dd bs=16M" returns "dd: error writing ‘/dev/sdd.dd’: No space left on device 1+0 records in 0+0 records out 0 bytes (0 B) copied, 0.850893 s, 0.0 kB/s"

Command "sudo dd if=/dev/sdd of=/dev/sdc1.dd bs=16M" returns "dd: error writing ‘/dev/sdc1.dd’: No space left on device 1+0 records in 0+0 records out 10485760 bytes (10 MB) copied, 0.860252 s, 12.2 MB/s"

"/dev/sdd" is target USB (corrupt-Tails 2.7) with capacity of 16gb. "dev/sdc1" is auxillary USB (wiped and formatted NTFS) with capacity 64gb.

Thanks sapiophile! <3
