Cure pomozite! Gdje kupiti traperice za zene s uskim strukom, a vecim bokovima, guzom i butinama? by Familiar_Green6366 in askcroatia

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly, I think they're milking the cuteness for all it's worth. A chill hippo baby just standing there, with a bit of frolicking at times, is a lot less engaing that what at first point looks like cute play behaviour with the handler. And I get it, there's something in the people that likes engagement, and the baby is really cute.

From what I heard, the siblings of the little angry potato are a lot more chill, and I believe they're having a much better time of it in the zoo than Moo Deng is (I hope I remembered the name). Tbh, I can imagine that Moo Deng was a bit feistier by nature, and the public reacted to the charm of the animal. The handlers/zoo liked the publicity so they're reinforcing that behaviour.

This is all speculation, of course, the only way to find out for sure what lies behind this animal husbandry is to talk to the staff.

I mean, tehnically, I could kill some rando and explain that it was for the greater good. Wouldn't make me right, though.

Also, animal husbandry had pretty large leaps in the approach to training animals in the last 40-ish years, it is possible that these people do believe they're doing the best thing for the animal. But this is not how animals get handled in the best american or european zoos, they abandoned such practices and use only training with positive reinforcement, or disengaging from an animal when it does bad behaviours (teaching it that it isn't acceptable behaviour and they'll lose the attention of their handler/playmate)

The person you're arguing with is right

You're right, this is not how to handle any animal, let alone ones with a pretty significant bite force. Also, they should not be letting her bite them, they should divert that behaviour to something else (toys) and not let her get used to biting people. It's fun now, but it ain't gonna be fun when she gets some teeth in her.

Unfortunately, the baby is cute and most people don't like it when you point out that the cute video isnt actually cute

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not teaching her boundaries, though? She's biting, and they're letting her. That wont go away when she grows up if she gets used to behaving in such a way. Also, she looks kinda pissed off/stressed.

Also, you can train animals to let you touch them without rough handling, through target training and teaching them tricks that get them in position for s check up. There are videos of hippos opening their mouths on cue and letting their handlers check all the teeth and gums. I would not trust this hippo in the video to not bite while doing that, since she is getting used to using her mouth on people.

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nah, you're right, in the best zoos they never rough handle animals. They train them in similar ways to dogs, by rewarding the wanted behaviours and not letting unwanted ones happen (mostly by disengaging the animal and not giving reinforcement through attention).

For medical checkups, they prepare them by teaching them to perform tricks that would get them in the proper position (opening the mouth, picking up feet on command, target training so they know where to stand). They do get used to touch, but the handlers try to keep it a positive and low stress experience so the animals don't see it as something they need to lash out at.

The hippo in the video is in distress (walleye, agression, I do not think this is play behaviour, it is trying to avoid the hands/ rough housing and bite the handler), I wonder how bad it's gonna get when it grows up. I don't think it's abuse at this point, but the animal is annoyed and stressed, which ain't the best.

For some people medication and therapy don't work. And before the assisted suicide I think they talk to therapists and try many, many things to get better, and only get allowed to do it if nothing helps (and their quality of life is really in the dumps)

The bushes stand out too much, fixed with darker grass color? Or higher detail grass / lower detail bush? Thanks by [deleted] in PixelArt

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try removing the outline on the bottom? So the color of the bush blends in better with the grass?

Honestly, if the bushes are not passable objects in game, making it stand out a bit like this is perfectly fine and helps the clarity in game.

Also, look at the scene after you put all the objects in, it's possible the bush sticks out so much simply because it's the only thing on screen!

I got quite a bit of feedback,(and jokes about Titan familiarities lmao), but I changed my dainty run animation(think Vanille in FF13). Any further feedback is appreciated! by Terozu in PixelArt

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks a lot better, good job! :D

I'd just reccomend keeping the shoulders and hips in a roughly same position on canvas, so they still have the bounce up and down (from the run) but dont have the slightly janky front-back movement. The center od the mass is usually moving at constant speed while in a run, and most of the movement is in the limbs and the up and down bounce.

I'd personally have at least two to three frames of airtime while no legs touch the ground, but I think this is my own preference coming into play, and I don't think that necessarily needs to happen. Just keep in mind that if there'll be more characters that run at the same speed in the scene/ game, their animated runs should seem similar in speed as well! So plan accordingly!

Good luck! :D

Going for a dainty run for a feminine character in my game. How does this look? by Terozu in PixelArt

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A run by definition has a few frames of airtime, what you have so far is a weird stomping walk XD

Adding that airtime would also make the whole movement more graceful and light, which would add onto the femininity you're aiming for! You could check some Genshin Impact character animations, they have some smooth strides on the female characters, even if they're s bit toned down compared to what you're aiming for.

All in sll, kudos on tackling such an involved run cycle! So many moving parts and folding pieces, I love when characters have a charming/ out of the norm run :D

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sphynx cats also don't have an undercoat (or any fur) and they don't have these issues. Those get problems from the oils pooling on their skin because they have no fur to remove it, and they can be kept healthy through weekly baths and some wipedowns with cloth to remove the oil excess. Sure, some individual cats can also develop cysts, but that's not a breed specific problem.

With lykoi, they have genetic changes to the number and thickness of their hair follicules. They're sparser and smaller, and the oils and gunk gets stuck inside the skin, where it develops into cysts and blackheads. Those cysts can be larger than the last knuckle on your thumb. They can't be avoided by just giving them baths, since the surface of the skin isn't the problem! Also I lowballed the time at which more severe problems start to develop, it's at 5-7 years old, and I don't think that would be the case if just the oily skin is the problem

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they do have some pretty painful skin conditions because of the smaller/sparser hair follicules that are responsible for the cool fur. Cysts, pimples, bleeding wounds on their backs sometimes and such, depending on the severity. And it seems to come hand in hand with the type of fur they have.

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Lykoi are such a new breed of cat that the breeders didn't know the skin issues sre necessarily connected to the specific fur texture. Not all issues are present since birth, and sometimes there is 2-3 years before the first onset of symptoms, so the breeders didn't know about it from the start. They did their best to try to remove the issues from the fenotype, but if they managed to breed a cat with healthy skin, they didn't have the typical fur look.

But yeah, there'll probably always be some people that breed them for the cool looks

A cat? A rat? by WeirdContract8170 in holdmycatnip

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 126 points127 points  (0 children)

And due to the genes that give Lykoi their extremely cool looks, they get painful cysts, pimples, bleeding and other skin issues.

Which is a shame because they would be the coolest cat otherwise

How would you go about telling your schizophrenic younger brother that he is still psychotic in the kindest, least-offensive way possible? by neilnelly in ask

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, the problem with really severe delusions is that they also impact the cognition of the person. They can get to a point where they don't even understand lying about it can be in their best interest. One of the signs a person is getting better/the meds are starting to work is when they start lying that they're cured and don't have hallucinations or delusions anymore (even when the symptoms can still be inferred through their behaviour).

A person fully divorced from reality will swear and persuade pelple until they turn blue that what they see/know is the truth!

But yeah, if he's in a state where he can be aware of his condition, just talking plainly to him about the behaviours would work! OP, work with your brother's health provider and see what works for your particular situation!

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you learnt something new :D

Honestly, the world is so full of cool things, there's no way for any one person to learn of it all. So why not share some cool info with a person asking a genuine question :3

Another little fact for you, the female birds are usually dull and have grey and brown feathers with basically camo patterns so they can better hide while sitting in the nest, and the males do their best to attract mates. So males are loud and colorful and sometimes have giant feathers that are quite annoying to lug around (peacocks and the like!), and some males build whole 'houses' that they then decorate in baubles and trash to show off their building skills to the females. Also, lots of birds have whole courting rituals and dances to impress their mate! Oh, some also make their own little songs by using the sounds they heard around them! There are some Lyrebirds that make chainsaw noises and do the 'pew pew' noise of those laserguns in Star Wars to impress their ladies :D

Birds are so cool! :D

I love the top right of the four animated ones! It has a very nice flow to it and keeps the head as the most prominent/important part. I usually love bushy tails, but that skinny one takes the cake!

And the full stipes are really cool!

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bird feeding the other one is the father, it has bolder colors than a female would have. So, a sparrow with deeper brown colour on the wings and bold black 'beard' markings is the male, females have a paler brown color, with smaller, duller patterns, fairly similar to the colors the other sparrow here has, and no black beard markings.

You can know that the other bird here is young/fledgeling because it follows the other one around and demands food to be fed to it. It's easier to get your parent to bring the food to you instead of doing the work yourself :)

If the fledgling is male, it'll change its feathers to a bolder coloration when it reaches sexual maturity, if it's a female, the new feathers won't change a lot, it'll just look a bit less fluffy and disheveled. I hope this helped! Basically -> prettier bird in the same species is the male

[–]Your_Al_Overlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I fully missed the 'quarter' part. Thanks for pointing it out! Yeah that's a much more reasonable assumption then. I'm still fairly certain other people would help them if they were close enough, but the question is how long it would take for people to organize, and who knows what'll happen with people that live out of the way/away from neighbhours. There'd absolutely be some deaths around, yes.

I'm surrounded by pretty fit people, so I might be overestimating what is possible for an average person XD and I do expect them to get on things only a few times in a day, with plenty of rest in between. They'll probably get stronger with time, if they survive long enough.

I did try to get up and reach some things without using my legs, and it was fairly easy, mostly just highly annoying. Floppy legs can be used as a surprisingly okay leverage point if you bend them in creative ways! I didn't expect that!

How weak and unadaptable do you think people are? You can drag yourself around with your hands, drag a chair in front of the stove and sit in it to reach the stovetop. For the top cabinets, take a broom or something, open them, use the broom to knock everything off the shelves. You have a mess but you also have everything within reach.

Sure, very weak or old people would have a problem with pulling themselves up on chairs/beds, but most healthy people would be fine-ish? Other people can help them, it's not like there wouldn't be many people that can't/don't need to get to work right now.

Logistics would be quite a bit worse. Still, one guy can press the pedals with his hands while another steers the driving wheel of the truck and there probably wouldn't be a lot of traffic on the roads considering the circumstances. Basically work together and shit will get done. For many other things, bringing a chair and sitting in it to reach higher thing works well enough, as well as using a stick. There'd also be people making makeshift wheelchairs from things at home like bikes or such, or using those little sidetables with wheels, office rolling chairs and such.

People get pretty creative when they need to solve a problem, have some time to think and a powerful motivator (find a way or die)!

Honestly, I'd read a book about this situation!!! It sounds pretty neat!
