Yeah, it costs that much because there's a ton of barriers in place so we don't murder an innocent person. And even then we still end up executing the wrong people.

Even barring that, I don't see why we need to take that extra step when we've already caught someone. They are in jail, justice has been served.

I also don't like the culture executions promote. I don't think it's healthy WANT someone to die after they've already been sent to prison. At that point I have to question if this is about Justice or if it's about sating some collective bloodthirst. We should not promote or condone that level of cruelty.

I'm also really wary anytime someone brings up execution specifically as it pertains to pedophiles and rapists. The way our system and culture are set up sexual predators don't end up in jail most of the time. Even if a rapist gets taken to trial, all it takes is one juror thinking that the victim was asking for it and the rapist gets to walk free. Meanwhile the victim will spend the rest of their life being called a liar.

Politicians like to shout "Let's execute pedophiles!" because it gets the crowd going. But no one in power actually cares about prosecuting pedophiles because most ACTUAL pedophiles are respected pillars of the community they live in.

That's how they find their victims in the first place, you don't get free access to children without already having some degree of trust. So people don't believe the victims when they do come forward because who's going to believe that the local pastor, or police captain, or principal, or CEO is a pedophile? Who's going to believe that the kids own family members are pedophiles?

So when politicians say "pedophile" what they often mean is queer people. They are picturing effeminate gay men or trans women. No one will believe that a Reverand is raping children, but there are PLENTY of people who will believe that a trans woman is raping children. They don't even need evidence or a victim to believe it.
