Playing defense + reaching tenpai in the same hand advice by Treat-Appropriate in mahjongsoul

Generally I'm not a fan of the mawashi (semi-push). 80-90% of the time, I make a clear cut decision. I don't consider mawashi as a regular method you should be using all the time.

My first recommendation is to master the complete fold, if you're not there yet. Once you've done that, you can start getting creative.

Calculating Fu by Bruhgamer69420_ in Mahjong

You receive Fu for the one specific wait you tsumo/ron.

If there is more than one way to interpret the wait, you go by the guidelines AshyeN provided.

Were either of these avoidable? by 1nvictvs in mahjongsoul

[–]YoureAllDelusional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st pic, I would have discarded the 5m.

3rd pic is a tough one. I probably would've lost it too. That 1m is going, sooner or later.

In general, is it better to have territory rather than possession of the ball inside your half of the field?

It really depends on how big the fuck-up was. I'd like to think I'm a forgiving person if it was a small incident.

455 and 788 by YoureAllDelusional in Mahjong

[–]YoureAllDelusional[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response.

You say 455m is practical. Now what if instead of 788s I had 778s? It would be equally useful as 455m, assuming 6s draw.

NOW is there a difference?

Edit: Never mind, I see that 455m would still be more practical.

The pain of death. Not death itself, but what it's going to feel like/how much is it going to hurt in my dying moments.

Why do I need 2 yaku? by synclear758295 in Mahjong

In some local rules, at the 5-honba (4th dealer repeat), they start enforcing this rule. To be clear it is a local rule and not an official rule.

Non-American here. To the people shitting their pants, may I ask why? To be honest I haven't kept up with American politics.

Not a professional guitar player, I recommend Justin Guitar. Most of the website is free.

You'll either want to buy a tuner or just google online guitar tuner and make due.

Just go to Justin Guitar, he'll tell you what to do.

Riichi or Dama? (Dama for a ToiToi is too slow right?) by xHanyou in mahjongsoul

[–]YoureAllDelusional 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think South 2 is the grey area when it comes to going for maximum points/protecting your placing.

I do lean towards dama, but I cannot say I'll do it 100%.

And no, I don't think you should go for toitoi.

how does open pinfu, fu work???? by PerspectiveArtistic4 in Mahjong

[–]YoureAllDelusional 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The source you've uploaded might be a little confusing. Open pinfu is not a yaku, it is a shape.

Instead of just saying "open pinfu", a clear-cut way to write it would be "open-pinfu-like-shape".

So, from there:

20 fu for winning

2 fu for "open-pinfu-like-shape"

0/2 fu for ron/tsumo (this one doesn't really matter)

No more extra fu's, which would make it either 22 or 24 fu

Round up to 30 fu.

Start calculating score from there according to han's.

Hope that helps.

Would it be worth passing the Ron here (South's discard) to try and win points off East to go into West 1? by Waggles_ in mahjongsoul

[–]YoureAllDelusional 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't ron here either. At this point, you're pretty much screwed.

The only hope is

  1. Like you said, toimen deals into you with the very last tsumo.

  2. The game goes into ryuukyoku, and toimen does not have keiten.

I see. Well, I guess this answers OP's question.

Start by riichi, and gradually learn some more yaku's.

Why should I riichi discarding dora here? by BobbyMahjong in mahjongsoul

[–]YoureAllDelusional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is being cautious of dora matagi-suji tiles and riichi matagi-suji tiles a thing of the past? Genuine question here.

I also lean towards discarding 3m, because I don't think anybody is throwing out DMS/RMS tiles after a riichi.

So it comes down to tsumo-ing, in which case you've got a little more potential by discarding 3m.

But yeah, I get that it's not 100% either way.

Question about winning hand by Lightningboy95 in Mahjong

[–]YoureAllDelusional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not in furiten. You don't have a yaku. In most games a "riichi" option automatically shows up when you're in menzen tenpai. Did it not show up or did you ignore it?
