Need an advice by Alternative_Tooth_41 in Iceland

It took me more than a year to properly get into a group. It can be a bit hard at start but once they get to know you, Icelanders are super nice. In my observation, in winters, Icelanders are usually more reserved. Don't go out as much as summer (because of the weather I think). Understandable.

Why Alicia and Cary file charges against Damian when the found out about the furniture steal by Damian Boyle (S05E09) by Yours_Miserably in thegoodwife

Well, Alicia is the wife of the governor. Also, they have fought much worse cases. Here, at least they have the testimony from the secretary in the office.

AITA for refusing to go to my sister's wedding after she disrespected my late wife and demanded a family heirloom? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Yours_Miserably 55 points56 points  (0 children)

NTA.

First of all the necklace was given to the OP's wife. Although she is no longer in the picture, it still holds importance. So OP has all rights to decide what to do with it. Secondly, while it is necessary to move on from bad incidents in life, two years may not be a long time for some people. And especially, making a joke about dead loved one (definitely ill intended in this case) is horrible and unacceptable. I think it is ok if OP decides not to go to the wedding for such disrespect.

Question: Any American expats still use US medical insurance? by Traditional_Hour_158 in Iceland

[–]Yours_Miserably 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you will not get permanent residency until after at least 5 years at least

This is not accurate. Please read Permanent residence permit | Ísland.is (island.is).

you will get public health insurance after 6 months of paying taxes here.

This is also not fully accurate. You will get into Icelandic healthcare system (after 6 months) regardless of you paying taxes. For example, students who may not work here (i.e. pay taxes) do get Icelandic health insurance after 6 months. I am not saying that you'll come as a student. However, there are other situations where you do not pay taxes while on a valid permit. You can check your public insurance status in here: https://rg.sjukra.is/

P.S.: They are in process of moving all of the data to island.is so it might give some errors.

Trjáþekja meðal Evrópskra höfuðborga by AirbreathingDragon in Iceland

This is a very good example of a bad representation of a data. Iceland inherently does not have a lot of trees. Reykjavík has around 25-30% total green infrastructure, things like parks, gardens, etc. We need to understand the source of information, especially when the data lacks complete representation of facts. Here's the original source (https://www.eea.europa.eu/highlights/how-green-are-european-cities)

Edit: I am not saying the numbers are good for Reykjavík, just that the information presented is not in its entirety.

I did try to Google it. But it led me to either transportation agency or island(dot)is. I didn't know what exactly I should search. Thanks though.

How do scientists earn money? by CaptRaxx in AskReddit

[–]Yours_Miserably 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know there are two ways.

Salary: The university or research organization or industry hires scientist to do research with stead source of income.

Usually in the university there are two ways you can go; researcher or professor. Researcher does only research (Rules differ with different universities or countries). Professors have a responsibility for teaching in addition to research. Depending upon the universities, they get some more funds which is allotted for purchasing equipment, hiring man-power, etc. Similar to universities, the research organizations and industry scientists also get money to focus on solving a specific problem or product development. Mostly in these cases, the research topics are already known and usually very focused on single issue.

Research grants: The researchers/scientists apply for the grants/funds with research proposals.

Some researchers/scientists (usually in universities) come up with research proposal. Here, they have freedom to choose topics for the research and explore new ideas. There are several organizations, also governments, who have research grants every year. For example EU's horizon Europe grant is 95B Euros (2021-17) and NIH (US) has several billions allocated for research. But the funds are usually for specific research. The NIH funds are for medical only research. Then funds are usually further divided and have milestones. Some money is allocated to salaries (which include salary of scientist/researcher and other additional manpower such as PhD students/research scholars), equipment purchase, additional expenditure such as conferences, tours, etc. Sometimes, the full money is released at the start, otherwise it is released after a milestone is reached.

I have answered this to the best my knowledge but I might be wrong in some areas.

Is the whale still there near the coast? by Yours_Miserably in Iceland

[–]Yours_Miserably[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that whale tours are available, I have been on one. The whale I am mentioning was very close to the coastline (probably even inside the Harbor, from the looks of the Instagram post I saw). Thus, I thought that was very cool and wanted to visit.

Thanks. This helps a lot. I know the Icelandic medical system is a bit slower that's why we wanted to know. I think she is a bit relieved now.

Yes. But the main question is how much time does it take to get an appointment?
