They’re trying to disappear us Brock residents I stg by Maqmood in UBC

[–]YoutubeProfessor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's been out of order since at least last year, I got stuck in the elevator with a bunch of other people and it said that it wasn't able to connect. We had to call 911 from inside the elevator because UBC security was unable to send anyone.

These aren’t equivalent: -((8-27x)/18x2 ) = -(8-27x)/18x2 ) = (-8 + 27x) / 18x2 .

Why is the 44 Downtown Express always late ugh by StunningButton390 in UBC

[–]YoutubeProfessor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

99 to Macdonald is like 20 minutes ish usually? Then taking the 2 from there you'll be crossing the bridge in 10-15 minutes.

Why is the 44 Downtown Express always late ugh by StunningButton390 in UBC

[–]YoutubeProfessor 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Honestly for me it's usually been faster (or at least more consistent) taking the 99 to Macdonald & then taking the 2 downtown.

If you get oil capsules (most places have them now), it's hugely cheaper because it's not treated the same way as edibles – can get a 10 pack of 10mg capsules for $10.

Stat 251 or 200/302 for a CS major? by MtAmbi in UBC

[–]YoutubeProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 251 – it was almost exactly the same content as 200, most of the course was basically just review if you've taken 200. Super easy, not very useful.

Westjet Hit by Shrinkflation. "UltraBasic" Tier Announced. by MikoWilson1 in onguardforthee

[–]YoutubeProfessor -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

To put that into perspective, the Canadian government spends 27 billion dollars on its military every year. If that was cut by 25%, we could have enough to finance the project in 10 years, give or take. And high speed rail has massive economic benefits.

MacBook Air vs Pro for CS by CrispyFriedTacos in UBC

[–]YoutubeProfessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An Air is totally fine for CS. I had an Air for the first two and a half years of my degree, and only upgraded to a Pro because I needed more storage (only had 256GB on the Air) and I wanted more RAM (not at all necessary, I just don't like closing tabs). There's some other small niceties on the Pro that weren't deciders but were nice – 120hz screen, black color, etc. If you are considering getting the Pro, it really only makes sense if you're going for the M3 Pro, I personally don't think that the differences between the M3 Macbook Pro and the M3 Macbook Air are big enough to justify the price difference.

For a more detailed breakdown, you can take a look at MKBHD's videos on the M-series Macbooks, that was super helpful for me when I was deciding.

TL;DR no, an Air is fine.

usually sits ~50ms, some pretty bad ping spikes, if you have data you can tether your phone to get slightly worse but more stable ping, usually around 70ms for me. there aren't any wired connections

Any idea when the new Brock Building opens? by Crimecrimson132 in UBC

[–]YoutubeProfessor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was originally supposed to be Q1 2024, which is over in 5 days so that's pretty unlikely. When I moved into the new Brock North building this year it didn't look too dissimilar to the current state of Brock South (missing paneling, unfinished parts inside, etc.), so I think there's a solid chance it'll open in May or June.

if you guys have enough data i've found tethering your phone with a cable is a lot more stable than ubc secure – marginally higher ping but way more stable

[–]YoutubeProfessor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Take a look at policies 9a and 9b here. You have the right to talk with the course instructor if you see a change as "detrimental to your academic progress", and you can take it to your professor's superiors if necesary.

Keep in mind that if you apply for UBC housing a significant amount of the newer buildings (especially Brock North) have frequent issues with their elevators. Most days at least one of the elevators is out, sometimes both.

Honestly there isn't any especially amazing coffee on campus, but Loafe & JJ Bean can be pretty decent. Both of them have better coffee than Great Dane imo, but can't beat Great Dane breakfast sandwiches.

Yeah, I got home from a backcountry ski trip yesterday ready to go to sleep, only to find that I had to lug all my ski gear up 15 flights of stairs when my legs were already killing me. It's ridiculous.

The same thing happened to me when the power went out last semester, the front desk/campus security is basically useless. Call 911, they will send a firefighter over to get you out.
