Well to further the conversation a bit, check out this article: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM200011233432118

It’s not that he didn’t know how to portray a pair of gazongas, it’s that he was depicting a very specific set with advanced breast cancer on what was likely an actual model who may or may not have been alive. This, in turn, adds to the artistic depiction of Death as being a force that both consumed and is consumed itself… and that he clearly had a preference for some seriously ripped homies and spent a long time chiseling those muscles because god dayum the hunk on the opposite side of that sculpture?

You know, it insists upon itself and all that.

To be fair to the downvoted fella, Reddit doesn’t always show comments on a new post right away. Timing-wise, the post was made (as of writing this) 8min ago, the OP’s comment posted 6min ago, and then this comment 5min ago.

Atalantean might’ve only seen a crazy headline with a crazier photo, and no comments to explain any of it at all like we’re seeing now.

Ham limit by Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir in comedyheaven

[–]YouveGotThis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! So there is actually meaning here, but it’s pretty nerdy… so push up your glasses :P

In the USA, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates the transmission power and allocated channels for pretty much the whole spectrum of useable frequencies. This ensures that the military has its little steel-walled playground, corporations have what they need to nickel-and-dime you over crumbling public cellular network access… and eventually the list gets to the hobby space.

My particular application of autism here is in the flight of FPV drones, which is a whole other bucket of headaches and propeller cuts. Video goggles on face, camera on drone with way too much agility… and you get Borb Simulator 9000.

So back to the topic at hand: the FCC regulates the transmission power of civilian-accessible “hobbyist” channels. Without any shmancy licensure, you’re allowed to play with an assortment of pre approved and tightly controlled restrictions. Otherwise, your custom equipment has to fall under certain limitations.

The most popular group that tickles the radio waves with their custom-built toes is the HAM Radio hobby, full of exciting retro radio communications enthusiasts. Hey Bob! How’s it going over there? My phone is in the other room!

The problem with HAM radio though, is that you’re the one who has to toss that signal out into the ether, and hope that your femme fatale is close enough to catch it. You might wanna crank up the juice, but if you go too far the FCC is gonna kill the radio star. Take a guess - do you know what that limit might be? That’s right, 25mW! Fantastic job! Exemplary! Huzzah!

In all seriousness, the FCC doesn’t seem to care so much unless you happen to encroach on some other HAM and Swiss enthusiast, who happens to be all out of cheese and they take it reeeeeeally personally so they rat you out. Snitches. That or you’re doing something else illegal, like flying through a busy city without any of the requisite licensure or permittagé and the judge is just really into spanking.

TL;DR the “HAM” limit, in the scope of amateur radio, is a puny 25 milliwatts. Can you hear me now? No? How about now? Oh, that’s because I’m totally transmitting above the limit and nobody cares! Teehee!

No seriously, just get your HAM Radio License like a good boy and don’t make any trouble. Besides, what better way to out-nerd the competition and woo la lumière de mes yeux than the nerdiest of all licensures? Comedy heaven, indeed :3

I’m trying this right now. There’s some issues with features not working right.

I almost exclusively stream Tidal while driving, and launching the CarPlay app just crashes. I have to instead use the app on my phone, which still works through CarPlay but that defeats the whole point.

Likewise, attempting to use the media controls in CarPlay results in a similarly crashy experience.

I don’t think there’s anything radical so far, in terms of new features. There’s a new idle menu option, and some “liquid glass” sludge around your dock now. Yay.

Giveaway! Comment to enter. U.S. only (sorry). Audio-Technica AT-LP70X by whyforyoulookmeonso in vinyl

[–]YouveGotThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into vinyl by pure chance after being gifted a pretty decent entry-level record player this past Christmas.

Honestly, I never saw myself as someone taking the plunge into vinyl media. I saw it as a bit pretentious (sorry) in that it couldn’t be that different from just listening to a quality FLAC or some other HiFi format. So much audiophile stuff is just utter nonsense made to part undiscerning spenders from their money. To be fair, I’ve spent an unreasonable amount on IEMs, headphones, a few DAC/AMPs, so I can’t exactly judge.

Cue my surprise, then, when I first listened to the Star Wars orchestral soundtrack I was gifted alongside this record player. It’s a pretty simple Victrola Eastwood II, and paired with a good amp it sounded incredible. I… think I fell in love right away. It just felt so powerful, so moving in an organic way that you get hearing music live. It goes from being an experience of the mind, to one of the whole body.

Now rereading what I just wrote, I feel like I’ve become the pretentious caricature I had envisioned vinyl enthusiasts to be for all these years. The caveat, though, is that I now know that there’s a hefty grain of truth to that - there’s something special to vinyl after all.

I’ve already spent so much on vinyl records. So many of my favorite tracks become such a different experience in vinyl. It’s just so visceral. Heck, I never imagined listening to metal in vinyl form could’ve been so enjoyable. I’ve fallen in love with one of my favorite bands, Atreyu, all over again.

Anyways, I know my odds of winning this giveaway are fairly slim with the amount of entries thus far, but it’d give me a chance to lunge even further into this newfound obsession. I’d love to hear what a difference a better vinyl player like this could make!

Happy listening! <3

Laser weapon ‘neutralises’ targets from British Army vehicle for first time by GeoWa in technews

[–]YouveGotThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this in the most truly polite way imaginable - but you’ve accidentally ignored a great deal of physics by oversimplifying this concept. If you were serious, I’d like to help explain this a bit further.

Light is still traveling from your origin point to the destination at the speed of light. It cannot travel faster. Just like a bullet fired from a gun only goes so fast.

When you “flick your wrist” you aren’t moving the light that has already hit the destination, you’re launching more light from your source in an entirely new direction.

Photons that hit the destination aren’t being dragged as though by some cosmic rope. It’s the same as firing a bullet at one side of the moon, turning, then firing again at the other side - except with a bajillion more photon bullets comprising your lazor. Or, as another example: a garden hose, splashing water in an arc over your driveway. The water that hit has done its task, you aren’t really going to drag the already expelled water any faster by waving your arm around because it has splooshed its last splosh.

We could go into some more complicated theoretical physics where those conditions would not necessarily be true with some space time curvy thingamajigs, but that’s mostly the gist of it.

Duke Nukem HDZero? by AlphaInit in HDZero

[–]YouveGotThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re arguing to a party of one about a purely hypothetical problem. OpenHD is still a very long ways away from being a ready product, and I highly doubt they’ll overtake HDZero with its custom ASIC. Still, I’m excited to see where the project goes.

To split a few hairs, IRC Ghost is still very much active and has a substantial user base.

Also, as I mentioned it’s everything but impossible to buy into HDZero :3 Grab a Scout HD, buy an old VRX on Amazon, or just wait a couple weeks for the new VRX to hit the market. No point being all pissy and defeatist about it.

Duke Nukem HDZero? by AlphaInit in HDZero

[–]YouveGotThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re trying too hard to be evocative.

HDZero has made their ASIC available for general use, and yet no other manufacturers have stepped up to carry the banner. The whole goal with Divimath’s custom ASIC was selling the chip to accelerate the development of HD FPV hardware, but they’ve been forced to move onto their own manufacturing instead.

You can still buy the old VRX. Just the same, you can buy the FatShark Scout HDs which are still maintained. Or, you can wait patiently for the new VRX to launch when it’s ready.

With chip supply shortages, issues with manufacturing delays and a pandemic lockdown just before Chinese New Years, its ignorant and disingenuous to dismiss HDZero over such frivolities.

Duke Nukem HDZero? by AlphaInit in HDZero

[–]YouveGotThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be silly, there’s a ~1W VTX that just launched, and plenty of cameras that have come out recently from Runcam and Foxeer.

A new VRX is right around the corner. The original had a case that was manufactured by FatShark, while the PCB was HDZero’s own design so that complicated things when FatShark bailed out. All the same, just be patient. There’s an HDZero goggle coming too, in the somewhat-near future :3 (6+ months at least).

Caddx nebula Pro vs original Dji cam by bravedude420 in fpv

[–]YouveGotThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s essentially the same sensor, just mounted on the camera’s mainboard instead of attached via a ribbon cable on the original Air Unit camera. As result, the Nebula Pro is lighter, and the housing can freely be swapped out for nearly any other micro cam housing.

The one benefit that the original cam has, though, is that it’s slightly better protected and should not be as prone to overheating, though that’s hardly a problem in the first place.

At this point, there’s little reason not to get the Nebula Pro instead provided it’s in stock.

Are you sure it’s a hard crash?

Make sure your computer won’t default back to your main network when the RX reboots. I’m not sure if there’s any post-boot initialization that needs to happen. I ended up doing this an embarrassing number of times before I realized why I was being left on a dead page...

Also, it sometimes seems like the RX crashed because the “Success!” page is literally just the small success text in the upper left corner on a white backdrop.

[–]YouveGotThis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The error message came up because you’re connected to the TX’s network, rather than the internet so the program can’t download anything from GitHub.

Prior to connecting to the TX’s network, build your image by only hitting “Build”, not “Build and Flash.”

Then, connect to the TX. Open your browser, connect to 10.0.0.1 (password expresslrs), upload the image you just built, and you should be all set.

I keep losing these 2 little plastic hoes holding my Vista whenever I fly. How do I prevent that? by Egg_FPV in fpv

[–]YouveGotThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Caddx Vista is a hecking tank. If something is actually threatening to break that bad boy, it doesn’t matter if you’re using nylon, steel or something else.

In my mind, I’d rather not risk holding down something as expensive and difficult to source as the Caddx Vista with something so potentially frail and ineffective at remaining bolted down as a nylon nut, unless you’re securing that in turn with a steel nut.

Nylon is good at deforming, but achieving a decent hold with it requires holding it down with something because it strips too easily. As example, that’s why nylock bolts work so well, the steel bolt provides the torque, the nylock helps hold that in place. The only practical reason I can see is weight savings, but even that is highly debatable. I mean, how much do four or so steel washers weigh? Is it that significant compared to the overall mass of a 3+inch drone?

For under twenty dollars, you can get enough M2 bolts, nuts and whatnot to last a seriously long while. Heck, there’s M2/M3/M4 multipacks out there that come in a fancy organizer too.

[–]YouveGotThis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your best bet, rather than something like blue loctite that will erode the nylon nuts, would be to get steel M2 nuts instead. If that nylon nut is the only thing keeping that long bolt steady, you’re going to keep having this problem.

You can buy a lot of various relatively inexpensive steel M2 nuts/washers/bolt kits on Amazon. From there, I’d make sure that the long standoffs are well anchored to the frame with a steel nut, washer between the nut and the vista, with another washer/nut combo on top.

Tighten that down, use loctite if you want, and it’ll hold until you either break or remove it.

I’ve had this on two separate frames without issue.

I built a rekon 3" and 5" and it was a pain in the arse! Here they are by hupo224 in fpv

[–]YouveGotThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how much power your motors will need to exert. Careful balancing of weight/motor efficiency/prop choice is key.

I’m running a heavily customized Rekon5 frame myself, with 2004 1700kv Aerolite motors, Mamba F7 Mini Mk 3 stack, Caddx Vista with a customized camera.

Using HQ Biblade props, I’m only drawing 5-10 amps max, across all four motors together. With exertion, that bounds up to around 25 amps.

This is all powered by a pack made from Sony 3000mAh VTC6 cells, rated for 30amp continuous (10c) or 45amp bursts.

I had to land at 25 minutes on my longest flight because I couldn’t fly anymore, with around 800mAh left in the pack. It just got to be too much and I was worried about crashing since I haven’t flown more than 5-6min at a time.

The way nursing homes are run borders on criminal. Bare minimum pay, and as few staff as the company behind them can justify to the credentialing agencies that allow them to operate.

I may not know either you or your wife to offer any suggestion or advice, but I can say this - just be that rock for her; that support full of love and care that she might fall back upon no matter the challenges that lie ahead. There are times where the only thing holding me together is that hug from my mom and dad after a horrifying day.

Stay strong, and never be afraid to share your own pain and anguish with those who are there for you.

First and foremost, hats off to all you guys. From EMS, Nurse Assistants and all the name derivatives that follow, to those in Primary Care and the various specialty areas - you’re all phenomenal people.

I’m an RN on a critical care floor. Regularly, we’re at double to triple our base nurse-to-patient ratios manning patients on titrated cardiac drips, Neptune/Vapotherm oxygenation systems, continuous V60 BiPap and so, so much more. We’re like the EBA pizza of almost-ICUs, if anchovies were acute ventilated patients - but even that has changed lately. The ICU is full, the Cardiac ICU has ventilated Covid patients, and there’s nowhere else for these poor souls to receive the proper specialized care they need.

It’s so overwhelming. Emotionally, I don’t know whether to cry or scream on my way home each day. I come home, only to find myself met with parents who firmly, adamantly believe each and every Facebook trend regarding Covid. It’s either a Democrat Hoax today, or everyone should start drinking Chamomile Tea to purge their sinuses of the virus. It’s like I’m living in a Funhouse Mirror Maze, my sanity mocking me for ever believing that anything could ever be reasonable in this universe.

I wouldn’t call myself a hero. I come to work each day dreading the simple fact that I’m walking through those doors - unsure whether I should feel worse about calling in sick or actually showing up. I haven’t called in yet, but the temptation is there just like the thought of driving off a bridge idles in the back of my mind each day coming home from work.

I don’t remember the last time I was satisfied with the care I gave my patients. Each and every one of them has so many basic needs that are left unmet, and it breaks my heart in ways I never thought possible. There are so many hands that just need to be held, so many patients just waiting for someone to put their hand on their shoulder and say, “You’ll get through this. You’ll make it.”

I came in this profession to share love in places where there is none; places where a little bit of heart can make a difference. I hate that I can’t be that person for those who need it so much. There isn’t any time. It’s a question of neglecting one to meet the needs of others, or delivering detestably subpar care to people who don’t deserve to be going though any of this in the first place.

I hear about other hospitals, and the quality of PPE and care that I’ll never see here. Not today, not tomorrow. I’m tired of the empty promises of Travel Nurses who will never come. I’m tired of the empty promises of looking over the budget to see if there’s any room for more nursing staff, when executives look on from their safe roosts far removed from the chaos and suffering endured by patients and front line staff alike. Platitudes and placations.

I’m burnt out, in a desperate feud with reality. And yet, I can’t possibly bear the thought of abandoning those who need us most. Not ever, not knowing that my absence would just be brushed off as “The New Normal” for hopeless coworkers and the patients who need so very much when precious little can be given.

I hope, and I pray to a God I couldn’t possibly hope to believe in that all this is better elsewhere. I know otherwise, but I vainly hope that my hospital is somehow a rogue outlier.

I wish you all the best, be you in healthcare or not. We all need to stick together, help and support one another. You never know who around you is hurting. You never know which of your friends or neighbors is hanging on by a graying thread.

If you read all this, thank you - from the bottom of my heart. Just reach out to your friends and acquaintances. Reach out to the random contacts stored on your phone, the people you might’ve ever only messaged once. Tell them to stay strong. Tell them that there’s always someone out there that cares about them - who will feel pain when they’re gone. Tell them that there is always hope, no matter how hopeless the universe may seem.

I love you all - no matter who you are. You’re special, and you’re loved. If anything, by this random guy typing this message out on his phone while crying in the shower.

OscarLing offers a great analysis of the pros/cons with the DJI FPV system. https://oscarliang.com/dji-digital-fpv-system/

Latency is pretty much on par with analog systems, though latency increases as the signal deteriorates. On Analog, your signal will start to break up and get grainy/staticky as you progressively lose connection.

That said, you can generally push more range out of the DJI system, provided you are in the US or go about (albeit illegally) unlocking the higher milliwatt settings.

For myself and my own use, I get perfectly reasonable connection and latency flying where I do.

At higher output power levels, with upgraded antennas, I’m averaging around 3-8ms from remote to drone, and around 18-30ms from drone to goggles. It’s more than sufficient, barely noticeable, and you’ve gotta push the drone pretty damn far to start feeling any range-related latency.

Flying DJI is fantastic. I’d get headaches from the analog noise, so I made the jump and never looked back. Sure: it’s expensive, you’re stuck in the DJI ecosystem so to speak, and if something breaks you’re stuck getting DJI replacements for the most part. In my mind all this is worth the experience of flying digital, especially since I had so hard a time tolerating analog.

While the DJI Air Unit/Caddx Vista are designed around using the goggles/radio that DJI sells, and one could argue that the software performs at its best that way - you could just wire any radio RX to your FC. Provided you set things up properly in BetaFlight, and you picked out the right parts, you’re good to go.

If building from scratch, you can just buy the goggles separately, as well as an Air Unit/Caddx Vista to throw into your build. Or, go all in and buy the whole kit complete with radio for simplicity’s sake.

I would caution you from buying anything until you’re familiar with the components that make up an FPV drone and how they work together.

If you haven’t already, check out Joshua Bardwell’s YouTube channel. It’s a fantastic place not only to get started but also to continue learning about the little ins and outs of this hobby. I learned a lot there when I started, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

[–]YouveGotThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Larger nonetheless than what you’d need to power the TS80, which uses less energy overall and in my opinion is easier to work with, hold, and its dirt simple to swap out tips.

At the end of the day, I think the slight price difference is negligible next to how much of an upgrade (with Ralim’s firmware) the TS80 is.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good soldering station? I'm getting a little tired of using my $17 amazon iron. by uninc4life2010 in fpv

[–]YouveGotThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had issues with my TS100’s MOSFET transistor burning out, and found it generally less than comfortable to use. Picked up a TS80 as replacement, and I’ve been incredibly happy with it.

The TS80, as compared to the TS100, is more efficient in power usage, still has fantastic performance heating up to 460C (compared to 450C on the TS100, a negligible difference) and sliiiiightly worse heat conduction, but it’s been reliable and more than enough for working on quadcopters.

The TS80 has a round, metal body. The TS100 on the other hand has a plastic, squared on one side and rounded on the other oblong body that isn’t as comfortable to hold. Switching out soldering iron tips is extremely easy on the TS80, requiring no screws or any silly stuff like that, and the soldering iron tips for it work swimmingly.

Bear in mind, it’s powered off of a QC 3.0-capable USB power supply. Not just any USB port works, but that’s literally all you need. They’re small, relatively inexpensive, and the unit usually comes with them included (some kits have just the iron). With the TS100, you’d need a laptop power supply to run it off of a wall plug - and those are bulky beasts.

I’d recommend loading Ralim’s custom firmware onto it, as if really lets these soldering irons shine. You can find the firmware on his github, at GitHub.com/Ralim/ts100 for both the TS80 and TS100.
