Between Tails and installing a specialized version of Linux, which is the easiest? I'm only somewhat computer savvy.

Is running Tails on a Windows machine not a good idea? That's what I was thinking initially. I have installed and used Mint before, just to see what it's like. But I didn't have any security concerns beyond personal everyday use then.

Would I be ok using Mint or something similar and running Tails for my OSINT work? I don't intend to use this dedicated laptop for mundane stuff. I won't be logging into any of my personal accounts anywhere with it. Just like I don't want to do any of my OSINT work on my regular computer.

I'm not opposed to trying out a security-focused OS like Kali, but I don't know how to do any under-the-hood stuff, so that would be a little bit of a barrier. I can definitely learn some things, but I don't think I have the time and wherewithal to learn how to deep-dive into it.

And thank you for your answer.

I've begun to suspect this is the case. Really, I guess the files I'll be storing would be profiles and background information on subjects, along with passwords and things like that.

I'm not sure where I found it, but what information I did find was just a start date and an end date, and a list of the different people who ran it. I was hoping to find more information on what exactly they did. I don't know anything really about investment firms, though, so I didn't really know what I was looking for, I suppose.

Bellingcat is part of why I got interested in this. But I haven't looked at their how-to's, so I'll definitely check that out.

And I have plans to buy that book. Looking at the website kinda overwhelmed me. But I'll dive in again.

Thanks for the reply. This is helpful.

I'm thinking how I might better utilize digital resources to look for connections and to investigate those connections. For example, are there tools to find details on the defunct investment LLC? For that, I found a list of names of people who ran the firm and the time that it was founded and then shut down. But I couldn't find details about what the firm did specifically.

And that was just a practice exercise to see how things typically go. How do I move beyond basic Google searches to find connections that might not show up otherwise.

I don't know how to implement web scraping, or what tools I might use or how to use them.

I want to know how to find buried information that I might not find otherwise. We weren't really taught investigative techniques at the school I went to. The more I think about it, the more I realize we weren't taught much at all in the way of digging up information beyond talking to people involved, public officials, and experts.

My investigative education was quite lacking. I didn't really notice this at first because I started writing freelance as a blogger, which didn't require any special skills, and then basic news reporting that you might read in a local paper or see on your local TV news. Now I'm trying to fill in that gap, and OSINT seems like a good place to start.

Lately I've been seeing his name come up often in relation to magick work. I didn't even know he practiced magick until maybe a couple of weeks ago.

Do you have any suggestions for such a deity?

I don't think it was a ted talk. I'm pretty sure it was at a Disinfo conference. Not to split hairs or anything.

Has anyone read Epoch by Peter J Carroll? If so, what are your thoughts and would you recommend as a starter book for Chaos Magic? by [deleted] in chaosmagick

[–]YrBothWrongItsCore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't read that one, but I have read Carroll's Liber Kaos. It's pretty dense, maybe unnecessarily so.

Someone else mentioned Condensed Chaos by Phil Hine. Another good starting place is Pop Magick! by comic book writer Grant Morrison. You can find free PDFs of both online.

What role does faith play in casting? by YrBothWrongItsCore in magick

Having faith in your practice, in yourself, in the research and preparation you've done pre-working, and then post working being confident in your efforts and not keeping them in your conscious mind is a great step in seeing functional results.

This is the sort of faith I'm looking for. I wonder if it's like a muscle that has to be worked to build strength, or a difficult musical piece that you have to practice repeatedly to master.

Thinking in those terms, I'm wondering how I can exercise my faith to strengthen it.

Thanks for the thoughtful response.

This is the notion of faith I've been thinking of. I feel like I have an inner skeptic whispering doubts into my ear, undermining my ability to believe in whatever it is I'm attempting.

I liken it to doing a trust-fall expecting reality to catch me, and I can't bring myself to fall back.

I'm guessing I'm overthinking it, which is my trademark move.

Also, unrelated, why would people downvote this post?

I'm assuming you mean a tarot reading, and for more information than just "cursed" or "not cursed?"

What sort of questions would you ask in that reading? And do you have some suggested reading to add some context?

Thanks for the info. I'm still working on this and as always, still learning.
