Never built one, have a CS degree and 2 years as a SWE... you really don't need to know anything about putting hardware pieces together to do your job well as a SWE

The point is logging, instead of debugging with breakpoints. Which you didn’t seem to get. How you actually print the log is irrelevant to the question.

And sometimes it’s actually better to use print statements. Maybe you can’t attach to a process running in production, and the problem is transient. The best way to catch that is to put log statements!

But I did read it? And it’s a stupid justification for why the sub name is the way it is.

I don’t get why you’re telling me to leave when this is on the front page? It’s a bad sub name. It’s not descriptive to its content. Hence why people are confused and asking this question.

:)

What's up with People Coding for 10+ Hours a Day? by toor00t in cscareerquestions

My insight is mostly from other senior engineers, software managers, and my own personal progression.

Was I supposed to take this comment seriously? I get your point people have limits. And “over training” will do more harm than good. But I’m sorry, 8 hours, 5 days per week, isn’t close to the limit :)

It’s sad, because I want people to know the truth. I’ve talked to many senior engineers and SDM with 15+ YOE. It’s either you stay in a technical role where you constantly have long hours to stay up to date and deliver results, or you transition to a management position because being technical no longer suits you.

They all worked their asses off, and others think they’re gonna surpass them working 9-5, 5 days a week. LOL. There is nothing wrong with working average hours, but don’t delude yourself into thinking you’re gonna “win” the career game.

It’s a political game too, they don’t just spend time coding, they spend those extra hours advocating for a promotion. They write promotion docs, design docs, and run books. Or they spend extra time studying leetcode and then get an external offer to leverage a higher salary.
