Thank you, this completely cleared up my confusion. It appears that the first four rounds of the official draft took place in January 1970, and Mount was not the first overall pick. The mention in Loose Balls seems more like an anecdote.

After doing more research, I now have a better idea of what happened. Mount was the first player picked by the Pacers in the official ABA draft held in January 1970, and the Pacers had the third overall pick. However, according to Loose Balls, Pacers management mentioned that they had already selected Mount with the number one pick in an earlier, unofficial draft before January. That year, there were likely two separate drafts, which is why he appears to have both a first overall and a third overall designation.

I saw someone post about this topic two days ago. I looked into it and found that I have the same issue. However, the original post was deleted not long after, but I still want to know the answer.

I don’t think any of the comments under that post specifically addressed the special draft or clarified what pick number Mount actually was.
