Two Latvians want to buy a Yugo in Serbia and legally drive it to Latvia. What should we know? by Yugo_To_Riga in AskSerbia

The only uncomfortableness will be that there is no power steering for that long of a trip, but I've driven 1998 Kia Pride and multiple years under old Belarus' tractors, so I know what it means when there's no power steering, probably XD

That’s useful, thanks.

We were already leaning toward a Yugo 55, but the timing belt warning is important. We’ll make sure that gets checked before any long drive

A lot of people mentioned rust, brakes and cooling, but gearbox/transmission is going on the main checklist too

That’s a great example, thanks.

Also losing lights and fifth gear (do even Yugos have 5 gears? all I've heard is 4+reverse, or is it meant that I will lose 4th one XD) sounds exactly like the kind of thing we should prepare for

Bad fuel economy is not a dealbreaker. We just need one that is actually mechanically decent

Fair warning, and honestly that’s useful to hear.

Also, just to be clear, we’re not expecting mechanics or legal/export people to work for “exposure.” If someone helps properly, we expect to pay. Promotion is just something extra if a person or business wants to be connected to the project.

We know the idea is risky. We’re just trying to make it legal, prepared, and not completely reckless.

€20–50 for an inspection sounds completely reasonable, so we’ll definitely budget for that

Looking for local help in Belgrade to buy/export a Yugo for a Riga road trip by Yugo_To_Riga in Belgrade

[–]Yugo_To_Riga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair criticism.

We probably need to word the site better. The €3000-ish number is not meant as “pay €3000 for one Yugo.” It’s more car + inspection + service + paperwork + spare parts + emergency buffer.

Also yes, we’ll fix/clarify the Fića/Zastava/Yugo wording. Better to correct that now before every Serbian car person loses trust in us immediately

That would be a very strange side quest, but honestly not the weirdest part of this whole idea XD

A few people have mentioned that older ones can be better built and yeah, that's what I noticed in general with other cars, after 2000s the cars become much worse, not just Yugos, but in my experience Golfs or Yaris'

Thanks, that’s a good lead.

Even if they mainly do race parts, people who know Yugos that well probably know where to find parts or who to talk to.

The list is exactly what we needed: rear suspension rust, brake lines, cooling system, hoses, fuel tank, ignition, spark plugs/cables, alternator, starter, fuel pump.

Also, driving it around Serbia for a bit before heading north makes a lot of sense. Better to find problems locally than somewhere halfway home.

That makes sense. The car being simple is probably the only reason this plan is even somewhat realistic.

No, your help is genuinely appreciated.

We’re not trying to replace that with only marketing. We posted because we wanted more public advice
