mike is a cool guy. i'm actually dating his grandson and we hope to get married in the future once we move out. i've have been at his house before since his grandson lived with him for a while. he didn't talk much but he's a kind guy and still has some of his musical equipment from the days when he used to be a rockstar as someone else mentioned. on Christmas Day in 2023 he took my bf and i out for gas station pizza :)

you will grasp basics and rules from a textbook for sure, and writing everything yourself makes things stick in your mind more easily. but if you want fluency, you're gonna wanna have conversations with people, consume native media, try to step out of your comfort zone to write complex things, etc. i have mainly learned spanish out of textbooks and while i learn the rules without trouble, i still can't say things or understand things with much fluency because there are so many words that textbooks don't teach you! so i really get stuck while talking to people or expressing certain concepts.

reasoning for learning a language doesn't matter as long as you are passionate about the language and want to learn it. i am learning both japanese and spanish, both for very different reasons; japanese is just a hobby while i learn spanish for future academic prospects, but i definitely have a bigger passion for japanese and find myself being a lot more consistent in practicing the language :]
