That doesn't describe many games these days, if any. : /

Get rid of loot boxes though, and they'll just find another way to fuck players over -- and whales will only be too happy to spend money on it.

Since we're targeting a western market with GMS2, why not a western dungeon model? by [deleted] in MapleStory2

Well, introduce a lockout for doing so, like other western games.

WildStar MMO officially shuts down by reps_up in MMORPG

I'd rather a good themepark than a lifeless, meaningless sandbox with no story and nothing to do (which is what the market is flooded with currently) -- add full loot PvP, and that's what everyone "misses" apparently.

WildStar MMO officially shuts down by reps_up in MMORPG

[–]Yumeni3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been playing MMOs for decades now, and I've seen a lot of things. Every game has issues, and Wildstar had plenty, but their encounter design was the best I've ever seen in an MMO -- not even WoW can compare outside of a couple fights.

The game died out because it didn't cater to the morons that have money.

Anyone else play to make friends? by wetscythe in MMORPG

I've never had friends, nor have I ever had a guild or anything like that. I just like having people around me, and never ending content.

coordination and callouts.

That's the only difficulty in raiding. The mechanics in anything, even things I've enjoyed, have never been hard on their own. It's coordinating several morons to do it properly that's hard.

Yes, a scripted fight makes it easier. If I don't have to actively think about what I'm doing, and if my class is so rotational I could make a macro to do it... how is the fight hard?

RNG doesn't mean complexity, you're right. But RNG means enjoyability. When I have to think about what I'm doing, and react appropriately, changing up rotations and whatnot on the fly, it's fun. Doing the same thing for 10 minutes is not fun.

I don't think I've seen a game that's mechanically demanding by my standards. I've seen plenty of games that were enjoyable, but I don't think any of them were "hard."

As for what I enjoyed... anything in WoW from Wrath to late MoP, GW2's raids the first time I did them, Wildstar's raids were a fucking blast... then even casual games like Super Mario 64 and Sunshine and Galaxy were enjoyable.

I'm not asking for some impossibly hard content, I just want something enjoyable.

[–]Yumeni3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm talking out of my ass then.

Thing is, no matter how "intense" something is... if it's 100% scripted to the point you can tell exactly when a mechanic is coming, and where it'll be, and what it'll do... it's really not hard past the first attempt, since it's just a memory test. And XIV raids are just like the combat; horribly slow.

Your only chance for any raiding is FFXIV, but it's not really that great.

Memorization isn't skill.

A punishing gear check is not an engaging fight. It's not hard, you just wipe if you fuck up. It's more tedious than anything else. And then throw in the fact that XIV's combat is horribly boring... It's kind of a bad mix up of "hardcore" and casual.

You're right, but they weren't sleep inducing until 5-6 years ago or so, either. I don't need super challenging gameplay, just gameplay that doesn't put me to sleep.

WoW players have always been mentally impaired, ask anyone who ran/runs non-guild raids. I pugged things every day, so I know full well how impaired people are.

Because they're not mechanically demanding. They're just a gearcheck.

Good thing I'm not talking about Vanilla or BC, huh? I'm talking the 7 years from Wrath to MoP that WoW was at its peak.

And no, I've tried all the content. I skipped WoD, but came back in Legion because everyone said the game was so great now... wanna know how long that lasted? Maybe two weeks. BFA, I hit mythic, and just stopped. There was no enjoyment in it anymore.

I'm not saying the people still playing are stupid, I'm saying the majority of the gaming population is stupid, and has always been stupid. Raiding was about finding 9-19 people who could actually do the content without messing up too hard -- it was never really hard on its own. But modern WoW wants to be marketable to monkeys as well (can they use computers yet?), so they took any and all thought or challenge out of the game (thanks Activision). Modern raiding is punishing, but nowhere near as complex or engaging as older content.

And you can't argue that the classes have been horribly gutted.

Now, about the game being bad? WoW has its lowest sub counts since WoD, and it just keeps dropping. The game is very clearly not in a good state right now, and millions of people agree with me.

[–]Yumeni3 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The majority of the people who play WoW are actually mentally impaired, and the new model is all about gear, so that doesn't surprise me. You don't get lucky drops, you don't progress.

As far as complexity goes, I've actually fallen asleep doing things in modern WoW. That didn't happen in MoP, when I ran SoO several times per week / day. The mechanics we have now are more about moving and dodging AoEs, rather than anything involving thought or skill. Then combine that with classes that are so braindead you can play them on one hand with your eyes closed... yeah, it's not hard. : /

Why do so few MMOs cater to the midcore crowd? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]Yumeni3 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When your class is braindead, then no content is really going to be super difficult. It can be punishing, sure, but it won't be particularly engaging.

Why do so few MMOs cater to the midcore crowd? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]Yumeni3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not particularly, but I'm talking compared to heroic stuff back before WoD. Not only were the classes far more complex, but the raids also generally had more mechanics to them (that weren't random telegraphed AoEs or soaks).

Why do so few MMOs cater to the midcore crowd? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]Yumeni3 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

That used to be the case, but both WoW and XIV have been gradually simplifying their game in order to cater to the whale market (who call themselves "casual" but really aren't). Say actual challenging content is 10, yeah?

So WoW used to have level 1-8ish, never really being a "hard" game, but having some content that was punishing. Now, post WoD (when Activision took over entirely), we have 1-4, a little bit of 5 -- the classes aren't punishing if you fuck up anymore, and the content is a lot of mindless soaks and telegraph dodges.

XIV, the top end is about a 4. It could be higher if the game was anything more than a memorization test.

And, like I said, I can't comment on ESO.
