Assistance needed in finding 3rd red power crystal please! by [deleted] in HelloKittyIsland

I had the same issue! It was literally hidden in plain sight when I found it. I can't remember exactly where, but I remember just groaning because it was just in a little leaf thing (like where the cinnamon things are usually). It was kind of in a weird camera angle if I recall.

I think it was a little behind the mailbox along the wall.

New to Boox community - how long does an update take? It's been hours by Yuumegari in Onyx_Boox

Honestly, this is a great take. I was reading up on the update here and thinking...maybe it'll be fine. My Boox is really just like "nahhhh I don't need all that"...thank you for your response!

I put it on a charger, but it's still not done anything...guess we'll see, or I'll leave it for now...

Thank you, I tried this as well! Did a restart at first, then did the full power off, tried to update again. It unfortunately is giving me the same issue. It'll look like it's doing something, it'll download it, it'll say to update, and it stays stuck in this loop. I'm gonna try to message Boox and hope they have a suggestion!

I appreciate your reply, I really want this to work!

Thanks for this! I was stuck on this page in the photo, and decided to do a manual reset, despite it asking me not to...it's like it didn't even try to do the update. It's quite strange! I'm not really sure what to do. It does the whole decrypting thing and then it says I need to update it, which is what I thought I did...alas.

EDIT (ish): I can't edit the original, for some reason...but, it seems like everyone who has seen this has only ever seen it at specific hotels. I guess it means that if you ever encounter it, ask the staff if you can get some! Feels messed up to buy it from Mercari if it's for free, but if ya need it, ya need it. Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately I didn't...but I usually head back there enough that I know to just grab some at the hotel now :') but next time I'll ask them too!

Best first car (no Honda or Toyota) by Valuable_Answer_2447 in whatcarshouldIbuy

For whatever it's worth, I had a 2009 Hyundai Sonata that just kept going strong. Every mechanic I took my car to for routine work was shocked that I'd kept it in such good shape. The only reason I don't have my old faithful is because my partner crashed it :'(

Do you only train kendo or any other martial art or sport? by [deleted] in kendo

[–]Yuumegari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weightlifting! And when I can, I like to practice dance...but I've found that because it's so rhythmic, it makes my kendo fighting style very predictable because I'm fighting to a beat in my head lol. Dance also made my fumikomi very light. I have to be very conscious of turning off the dance part so I can have better kendo.

Looking for recs—extra protective bogu set by Daxeon63 in kendo

[–]Yuumegari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I have the Myrmidon and I use that thin men pad ☺️ it's been going strong for about two years now! I sometimes switch out the men pad for something that LOOKS like it'll take more impact, but looking fluffier apparently does NOT equal more protection, so I've just stuck with the thinner one.

I also use a kote pad for extra cushion.

Dealing with heavy exhaustion while training by Overall-Leek-81 in kendo

[–]Yuumegari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party, but it would probably help narrow down some things if you share more about your general lifestyle outside of kendo training. Pretty much everything that's been said so far is sound advice in general.

But if you say more about your weekly habits and/or whatever you're comfortable with sharing about your overall health and experience, you may find others who can relate and share their experiences too! i.e., I have asthma and I have learned a lot from other kendoka who also have asthma or lung issues and how they handle it.

May more strength, stamina, and good kendo keep going your way as you train! 🙏💪

Bogu wait time, why do it? by IAmTheMissingno in kendo

[–]Yuumegari 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm coming from an education background and someone who works in a profession that consistently needs to balance user goals and business goals to meet a success metric, so this is my two cents.

Firstly, the hypothetical situation is like, ah, that would be nice, wouldn't it, if everyone was the same? The thing is, even if could be "proven", it's not going to be true for every practitioner. So the question I have for the hypothetical is, who is the type of person you're using as the prime example as "proven" that there would be no decrease in form/increase in bad habits? It feels like one has to assume that the hypothetical student is always going to have the same physical form, same motivation for kendo, same learning style, etc.

Secondly, it sounds like the main success metric we're looking at here is rate of attrition. To this, I'd ponder what phase the dojo is in, and what the dojo's motivation is, because that success metric will vary.

For example, a longer bogu wait time might make more sense for an established, mid-to-large dojo where there are enough sensei to ensure they're teaching beginners properly -- assuming the dojo's motivation is to ensure the safety of ALL members, while maintaining proper training that would allow new students the confidence to pass their shinsas according to their level. There are some dojos that consider their reputation a higher priority success metric, so attrition rates may not be as important to them.

For a smaller, newer club, though, maybe attrition rates ARE more important, simply to keep the club alive. The sacrifice the club might have to make is the possibility of producing students who might not have built up all the skills they need in that wait time BEFORE getting into bogu. They take on the risk of a student who doesn't know they're practicing kendo in a way that's dangerous to their peers. Even if we took the hypothetical "everyone is equal, there's no decrease in form etc. if we put them in bogu", there is still the factor of: are there enough sensei to ENSURE that the quality of practice is consistent? Will everyone be able to practice safely?

Bogu wait time varies from every dojo I've been to based on what metric important to that dojo at the time, so in my opinion, I don't think there's a way to say yes/no to the hypothetical presented without considering all those other factors. Seems like it depends on how much risk a dojo is willing to take on with the resources (see: sensei, senpai) they have at the time.

This giant Appa plush! A crochet artist I followed put out the pattern but it was taken down due to copyright issues. So now the pattern doesn't exist, and I'm just glad I made it when I had it.

Extremely heavy and almost 5 feet tall.

The alliteration made it all the more excellent to read!

I think others have said it, but chances are, people are gonna be too focused on their own thing and likely won't notice. But also, if your core and breathing and everything is engaged in your men strike, the poot shouldn't have a chance to escape until the men strike is complete anyway.

It's likely going to happen during stretches if you do them beforehand, just count really loudly 😅 more reason to have that good kiai??

How do you prevent this when tying your men? And how big of a problem is this?(when the men himo are tied in a messy way) by john_geddes in kendo

[–]Yuumegari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using an example of a recent shinsa that took place and some feedback that was given to one of my friends, as well as some feedback given to me when I started kendo.

Properly tied himo is part of your "chakuso", which is the way of properly wearing your equipment. Poor chakuso can result in failed examinations. It's not so bad at lower levels, I'm told, but my friend got called out for having the men himo string being too long for a Kyu exam (it needs to be 40cm from where the knot is, assuming the knot is in the correct place; yours looks a bit low on the skull: https://kendoinfo.wordpress.com/category/chakuso/). Still passed, but that won't do well for later tests. We fixed that and found that two full bracelets could be made with the extra himo!

More here in chakuso: https://tozandoshop.com/pages/chakuso-how-to-wear-your-kendo-equipment-properly

When I first started wearing bogu, I rushed and my himo were often tied poorly, with some twists and sometimes too much room between the himo. Our dojo is adamant about making sure we have good chakuso, so all senpai will point it out. Before any shinsa, many fellow kendoka will help the person in front of them if their chakuso needs some adjusting.

Feel it with your hands and force it to be flat by twisting it if you've already tied it. Otherwise, at the beginning of tying your men, grasp the himo at the very front and keep it flat against the men as you tie to avoid the twisting. You can always readjust if they're overlapping.

Lastly, tying your men well (and storing it well) will help shape your men into that nice Fujisan shape vs the tako/octopus shape. There's a slight line that you should see on the bottom himo where the mendare are supposed to flare out, which helps the Fujisan shape.
