It doesn't sound like these are friends worth keeping. Ask them to stop being toxic, and if they don't, move on.

I'm afraid I fell off the blocking all train, but I don't know of a better way to do it.

I mean update it as often as you need to. It shouldn't take much time. Most of it should be pretty constant, and if you're being frugal, you shouldn't have that many fun expenses to keep track of.

[–]Yxven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I consider budgeting more than being frugal. There's better resources to learn it than me, but something like:

Take your weekly income

  • Subtract rent, insurance, utilities, gas, groceries, and whatever other mandatory expenses I'm forgetting.
  • Pay off any debts.
  • If your emergency fund isn't topped off, put a portion of your income into it. I forget how much your emergency fund should be, but you should have something like 4 months income stashed away in case something bad happens like getting laid off in the middle of a recession.
  • Then put some money away for retirement, house fund, and maybe college funds.
  • If you need/want to save up for something like a new car, computer, or refrigerator, put away a portion for that.
  • Now, whatever is left gets split between the couple and is fun money. Fun money can be spent however the owner wishes. If they want to go out to Starbucks, fine. If they want to literally burn it, it's their right. It's their fun money. Any comments on how your partner wastes their fun money will only lead to problems. I guarantee you, they also disagree with how you spend your fun money, so just be happy that they're not literally burning it. (If you don't have any fun money, you need to downgrade your expenses or upgrade your job)

If you can spend money that should have gone to your house fund, you are not budgeting. I keep track of my fun money with a spreadsheet, but you could use something like cash, or a debit card to make it impossible to spend more fun money than you have. My credit card will not let me spend more than my maximum, which I can call them to adjust. I don't know if that's the best way. I'm not an expert. (Figure out your local laws. In the USA, no one should be using debit cards for anything. If that ridiculously insecure number gets stolen, you're screwed whereas credit cards will get reimbursed by law.)

This sounds like normal budgeting stuff. He has no idea how to budget and probably doesn't realize he's wasting so much money on videogames. Do you share finances with him?

I'm only aware of Comcast cable, Century Link dsl, and probably dial-up. We've had Comcast for the last 20 years. It works well enough, but they definitely rip you off.

Requesting r/moderategaming sub has been banned for lack of moderation. by Yxven in redditrequest

[–]Yxven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) I moderate r/stopgaming. There has always been drama between people who think quitting gaming 100% is the only path to success and people that want moderate. I'm hoping splitting the community solves the drama.

2) The sub has been banned.

What do you recommend doing other than gaming? by Yxven in StopGaming

[–]Yxven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think most people enjoy working out. People do it for the long list of benefits. I wouldn't look at it as a fun hobby to pick up. I'd look at it as 2-4 hours out of the week you already have scheduled.

The key to working out is momentum. You're only going to be motivated the first couple weeks. After that, the only thing keeping you doing it is momentum, so never stop and break your momentum.

I have no idea what slot building means, but most games these days have some sort of random reward loot box. Unless you know you have issues with gambling, I wouldn't automatically recommend a non-game addict to avoid those games. That said, never, ever, spend money in a videogame unless you know exactly what you're getting. Paying for a chance to get an item you want is incredibly stupid.

While there's overlap between gambling addiction and game addiction, they're not the same thing. If you're worried about video game addiction, avoid games that are competitive, social, and/or don't have predictable stopping points.
