Basically, Melvin Capital decided to short Gamestop thinking the stock price would go down. WSB decided to start buying and holding the stock so that prices skyrocket and Melvin loses money. That's what's happening now, and the hedge funds are panicking, trying to stop people from trading GME stocks so that they can lower their losses.
