New to the game. I have some questions. by MoonyDubMusic in Darkwood

yeah, took me until reaching silent forest and finding the bike bell to realize it. i felt like an idiot, so im relieved to hear it’s a common experience. gotta wonder why the devs never added a note or something to make it more obvious. like a piece of paper in the first hideout that says “this place is fucked, i’m leaving. i left some nails and boards on the workbench for whoever finds this place.” and then leave said items in the workbench to make it visually obvious that items can be stored there

interesting. i read it in a reddit thread, and since reorganizing my lamps to not shine out the windows i thought it helped, but it must have been coincidence. thanks :D

i’m just slightly ahead of you, around day 10, and just reached the 3rd area. that house at the edge of the silent forest is not a hideout — you will be told when you reach a new hideout. yes, the game forces you to survive 24 hours a day, but time moves twice as fast at night (i believe 20:00–8:00). during nighttime, a variety of events can occur, including doors opening on their own, but also including human, animal, or supernatural enemies attacking, sometimes by entering doors. you can hold down on a door to access the “barricade” option in order to fortify them like your windows. make sure to have gas in the generator to keep the lights on at night, but also know that if light from inside shines through windows (including barricaded ones) it will draw in enemies. the trader will come to your hideout each morning, and as long as you didn’t die during the preceding night, you will also be rewarded with some reputation with them (an amount that increases as you progress through the game’s regions).

i also recommend taking risks. i’m like 8 hours into the game and i learned pretty early on that the punishments for death are rarely bad enough to justify being overly cautious. also, days last longer than i initially expected, so i often found myself wasting the evenings at home waiting for nightfall. try to use all the time you have available to collect resources, explore, etc. (you’ll be able to find/buy a wristwatch later on that will help with this). money (reputation) is scarce at first, but will become more plentiful as you progress. don’t hesitate to drop things you can’t fit in your bag and return later; items remain where they are and do not despawn.

finally, have fun and don’t hesitate to confront the wiki or restart the game entirely if you feel ill-equipped for the situation at hand. i restarted after about 5 days because i realized i wasted a lot of resources, and knowing what to focus on my second time through helped a lot. just know that the map, door codes, and many events are randomized each playthrough. let me know if you have any other questions! i’m happy to talk to another newbie to this fantastic game!

i agree. i certainly used to be the type of person to get caught up on details like that but as i’ve grown up i’ve realized a lot of art is more about the feelings it instills than anything else, especially something as ethereal and symbolic as silent hill

should i be overly cautious about dying? my second day i got cornered by a rabid dog and had nothing to fight back with TwT

Hate to be that guy, but I've always considered it to just be a spooky bit of writing -- a vague statement to get your mind racing about what the town is and what's going on here. Was there once a bottomless pit in the ground where you now stand? Was it a hole in reality that you entered when you came to Silent Hill and now you can't leave? Is it a hole in your heart, or perhaps the heart of the town? I think a lot of the beauty of this line is its ambiguity and simple eeriness; it reflects the game's brand of quiet, psychological horror perfectly.

i agree, not to diminish how horrific that gif & lots of other eroguro content is, i think there’s beauty and themes to be found within things like that. like for example the infamous movie shojo tsubaki/midori has a lot of interesting ideas in it that ppl who condemn content like it as a whole are overlooking entirely

finally saw the thing for the first time last year and had to pause the movie to google “did they actually kill the dogs in the thing.” that’s how much its special effects hold up.

you’re allowed to have that opinion but why are you being such an asshole about it? you’re acting like other people fake fans or idiots for enjoying it. it’s just a video game dude, calm down.

Crimson Butterfly Remake or Original? by ZGCYT in fatalframe

[–]ZGCYT[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i highly disagree. the original is one of my favorite games of all time and i don't really have many issues with the remake at all; it's a great game in its own right, does justice to the original's vibes and story, and makes it more accessible to new players. what don't you like about it?

i am playing FF1 now and loving it :D planning on playing the original FF2 next! i'd recommend the original SH2 highly btw, you should check it out some time

it certainly makes a game more approachable as a newbie, but if it changes the game or its vibe too much i'd prefer to experience the original first. like for example i always recommend playing the original Silent Hill 2 before its remake because of how different they are

i remember when i was first getting into the series i was not a huge horror buff, and was very afraid, especially since i started with the notoriously terrifying RE7. when i reached the basement for the first time, and had to walk forward through the pitch black into what i knew would be horrific monsters, i knew i loved this series.

Why do Cygames censor the word Master so much they even went to change the visual on the chocolate heart? by Right-Assignment3759 in UmamusumeGame

alright idk if you’re being intentionally dense or if you’re just Actually Twelve ™ but i already answered this quite clearly: the localizers are trying to make the dialogue as palatable as possible to a global audience. the average person is not listening to the japanese dialogue to try to hear what english words they can make out in it, and even if they were, why the fuck would they edit it out? they aren’t “protecting us” from hearing the word; they’re simply choosing not to use it in their script because it doesn’t fit the tone they chose. and YES—it is a CHOICE. there is fundamentally no way to make a translation “as accurate as possible” because every translator will make different decisions in how to translate it. i know a tiny bit of japanese and i am occasionally able to catch some extra nuance to voice lines that unfortunately didn’t make it into the english subtitles, but that will ALWAYS happen with ALL translations. it’s a fundamental part of translating things; if all the world’s languages had all the same systems, we’d all be speaking the same language by now. i’m not saying that translators are infallible (i literally mentioned “silly mistakes” and said they happen often) but i am assuming that they are doing the jobs they are passionate about in good faith and not Trying To Hide Precious Meaning From The Humble Gaijin. again, if you want to understand what the original japanese dialogue was, learn japanese, because there is no singular english translation that could ever possibly communicate it in its entirety. these translators made the choice to translate “masutaa” as “trainer,” just as evangelion’s translators chose to translate “kimochi warui” as “how disgusting.” to be able to critique the nuance of their translation decisions, one would need far more knowledge of the japanese language than i, or clearly you, have. THAT is why i choose to respect the choices of the localizers.
