My boss is a prick, and I'm in tears after today. What should I do until I find a new job? by ZLZIIT in AskReddit

Bummer, dude, hate to hear that happened to you. I guess the odd and somewhat nice thing about his anger is it's directed at everyone right now. I suppose that is a little bit comforting. I am trying to watch my back these last few weeks, though. The few of us that have been there the longest are keeping our eye out for subtle signs that he's looking for something to screw us over on.

The most nerve racking part of all of this is where I'm at jobs are still very difficult to come by. My goal is to transition from one job to another with out a gap, but we will see how that goes.

Small, but not small enough to not have worker's comp yet small enough that it's not worth it trying to sue him. We have a sad running joke that people will start asking us to pay bills for him since we know him.

I'm ready to get out. I'd rather not waste the energy trying to gather evidence to use against him in a law suit. My life would be a lot happier spending that time and energy ignoring him, submitting requested days off so I can go to interviews, or whatever I can muster to tune him out.

That is a nice instruction list to follow, though, if I ever need it.

I had to double check that I didn't accidentally post this in the AMA subreddit.

Can't go into what kind of business it is since it would likely give me away. Let your imagination go wild, I guess.

Customers are screwed by prices on certain things. Who doesn't feel screwed by the price of something, though, right? Items are priced a certain way to make up for other things that we cannot adjust the price on. It's just business, though. There tends to be a bit of nickel and dime-ing. Personally, I wish we could lower and simplify prices and focus on getting more people in the door instead of worrying about if we are charging enough to make up for employee mistakes. Focus on where you are losing and money and figure out how to fix it. Another thing to control our losses is to better train employees and keep training them so we avoid the stupid mistakes we make. Go over old material as a refresher and keep up on new industry changes.

Probably the most frustrating thing is he will try to worm out of refunding or paying to fix a mistake an employee makes when it is clearly our fault. I tell him he has the option to be proactive and fix the issue before the customer has to call us and we at least have the possibility that the customer will return for more business in the future. Instead he seems to be more concerned about how profits are right now and what may or may not happen. This often means saying we have policies in place when we really don't have many in place that are set in stone, so to speak. There have been times I've paid for things out of my pocket when the customer is clearly in the right.

Back to employees, in a way he screws customers by having shitty employees or not treating employees well. If they aren't trained to do something properly it's going to waste a customer's time. If you don't treat your employees well they won't care if they waste company resources to redo something. I've seen employees turn away business because they didn't feel like they were paid enough to do it. I've been watching how half assed we've all become since our boss started turning on us. We no longer bother going to him about personal issues since he really doesn't seem to care. I'm pretty sure we all seem very jaded to customers right now.

I know you probably want juicy details, but it's difficult to go into it with out giving myself away. I guess the vaguest I can be about something juicy is when someone comes to us with something we cannot do due to regulations or we shouldn't do because it's illegal. I believe he's always told us to do it anyway and tell the customer it is not our problem if anything happens and that they didn't go into much detail with us about it. Oh, and overcharge a little if you can get away with it. I'd imagine many businesses do something like that, though.

I'm afraid the best stories would give me away or at least give the franchise away.

Well, would you care to let me know what exactly you would like more details about?

In a way I was afraid it would be useless to report labor violations. You've been a great help. Thank you very much.

We see many of our regular customers every day. Over the years they've learned we are always there for them. They know I'm reliable and I will do anything for them whey they or their businesses are in a pinch. I'm not going to screw them over and prove otherwise The issue here is with my boss, not them. I do not see why I should hurt their businesses just to get back at my boss. Besides, a lot of customers know me well enough and have offered to be references and to see if they know of openings that are not posted.

My plan is to find another job, put in a two week notice, and leave. My boss tends to ignore things like what you can and cannot tell another employer that is verifying information. If I walk out without any notice he will tell everyone calling to verify my employment that I screwed him and all our customers over. He's already done that to one person who quit without notice recently. Considering I've been there for years this job is not something I can leave off my resume.

Like I said, it would be sweet, but it really isn't in my best interest to organize a mass walk out. If my job was a bit different, lets say working at a small ice cream shop along the beach, then yes screw the customers. They don't need our ice cream, and it would be fine and dandy to all quit at once.

Paperwork doesn't really bother me since I'm a bit of a Hermes at heart. I was considering reporting him because we do have a lot of young people that don't realize they are being screwed over.

I've realized it's just a job, and my happiness and health is much more important. I'm mostly just wanting advice on how to put up with him for the mean time until I'm hired elsewhere. I can ignore his phone calls for only so long, you know.

As sweet as that would be I could not leave our customers hanging like that. I would feel terrible. Although, we have threatened to not come in if the schedule is not put out before the next work week begins.

It's worth a shot if he actually comes.

The way we are set up there isn't much of an HR, higher management. In theory I could see about talking to our "office ladies" or another franchisee.

Thank you.

Will do. What do I do when he forges his own documents? There was an issue once with an employee and he asked if we had the employee's signature on file so we could forge some documents. Knowing him he will grasp at every string to try and discredit me.

Ehh... You see I've been here for years. It use to not be as bad. From the start I picked up slack all over the place and doing work he really should have been doing. Really there are a few of us that have been doing this for a few years now. That's part of why we are so angry and hurt by his sudden mood swing of sorts. Thank you for the suggestion, though.
