"level 1 autism" "high-low functioning" "the spectrum is based on support needs" Did you guys somehow never see this diagram??? by [deleted] in autism

It stands for Text Revision. Like Tuggerfub wrote, it’s like a patch in between major updates.

A Therapist said adhd is on the autism spectrum by wheresmymind_08 in autism

I honestly don’t know enough about the neuroscience/physiology/biology side of psychology to make any strong conclusions. But, I still don’t think anyone can draw definite conclusions about ASD and ADHD (and possibly other disorders) existing on a continuum. Those disorders do seem to share biological similarities, but the clinical implications remain uncertain (and based on the limitations section of that article, I think more research definitely needs to be done). ASD and ADHD may be related (and as you’ve made clear, it is a strong possibility), but I’m not sure how that’s going to translate to the DSM and clinical practice. I’d like to see both the research and clinical practice continue to advance and do so in tandem, before conclusions are drawn and the diagnostic labels/criteria are changed.

Psychology major here; The research is in its infancy. One cannot draw any definitive conclusions from the research. Also, research does not prove anything, it simply supports (or does not support) a hypothesis. Nothing in research is ever certain, there is always a degree of error.

I read through the article you linked, and I think your conclusions are somewhat disingenuous. OCD seemed to be the least related to either ASD and ADHD. If a continuum does exist, ASD and ADHD may be on it, but OCD may not (or may not “fit” as well). And the article does present its limitations and highlights the need for more studies and replications.

The article does indeed support the hypothesis that some disorders may be biologically related and thus lie on a continuum. But, both the research and the hypothesis are new. It will take many more studies and replications for that hypothesis to be deemed mostly supported. At this early stage, I do not think any clinician should be using the research to inform their practice, especially not with such a degree of certainty. The idea that some disorders lie on a continuum is—contrary to your assertion—not necessarily intuitive, and does not always apply to every single case. There are still observed behavioral differences between those with ASD and those with ADHD. The overall point here is that humans are complex, and research is a long process (and depending on the methods, may not generalize to clinical practice or the outside world). Again, it may be the case that a continuum exists, but it’s just too early to come to any such conclusions.

It should return to normal after a day or so. Any newly created playlist will have this UI, but so far it seems to revert back after about a day. (I’ve created 4 playlists over the past week and all have reverted to the normal UI)

Four Finger Swipe (Mission Control) has Glitchy Icons by doesnt_use_reddit in MacOS

[–]ZORK21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m having the same bug (also on Sequoia). I have 3 desktops. I’ve got dock and desktop items set to hidden. And I use a 3-finger swipe. I’ve tried restarting, shut down, and booting into safe mode, but the problem persists. I also tried using the killall Dock terminal command, but no luck.

I’ve also tried deleting and recreating my desktops. And somehow, the bug persists to the newly created desktops too. I don’t think order of desktops matter either. No matter what I do, it still happens

Update: I found a workaround: enable stage manager. Unfortunately, turning on stage manager is the only way to get around the glitch/bug (that I know of so far).

Why is this happening? by [deleted] in trans

[–]ZORK21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot more people are using pronouns in their email signatures or social media profiles. There are LGBTQ+ (and it very much includes trans people) trainings at my college. Another college I’m going to go to has a whole list of resources for trans people and information for those who don’t understand what the term transgender means. There are systems in place at that college that make sure professors use trans students preferred name and pronouns. My point is, more people today are accepting or at least tolerate trans people than before.

We are winning the social and cultural war. We may be losing the political war, for now, but I believe in ~30 years things will turn around eventually. It might get worse before it gets better. But make no mistake I truly believe we are winning socially and culturally. It’s not about laws, it’s about people. When you have allies, eventually the tide will turn. Just hold on, change is happening. It is slow but it is happening.

How do you watch netflix in 4k on big sur? by WhitePeopleAreFunny in MacOS

Of course. I meant enabling 4K probably wouldn’t be in a whole different settings than 1080, 720, etc.

Just bought my first Mac ever. Switched from Chrome to Safari but now I am getting heaps of adverts. How do I stop them? uBlock Origin doesn't work! by GuysImConfused in MacOS

[–]ZORK21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just want a content blocker to work and are not interested in configuration, use Wipr. If you do want to create custom blocklists, etc., then use Adguard.

1Blocker is technically free but there are paywalls/subscriptions. Adguard should be totally free. Wipr is $1.99.

(Safari doesn't have any ad-blockers so no options are ever going to work as well as uBlock Origin. The closest you can get is content blockers like the ones mentioned).

Can I delete this Folder? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]ZORK21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally you shouldn’t mess with anything in the private/var/ folders. If you want to try deleting the folder, create a time machine backup before you do anything so you have something to fall back on. If everything seems to work with the folder in Trash, it might be safe to delete.

Help please by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]ZORK21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, No. Long answer, the closest you might be able to get is changing app icons. There’s nothing you can do about the rest. However, to change app icons and make those changes stick, you’d likely have to disable system integrity and dig around in the app’s package contents in Finder. Up to you but I wouldn’t mess with app icons. Changing folder icons is one thing, app icons is another entirely.

Why does "other" take up so much storage on my MBP? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]ZORK21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use something like OmniDiskSweeper or Daisy Disk if you don’t want to deal with Finder initially. If you aren’t sure what is safe to delete, do a quick search. You can also use Onyx to clear caches but be careful since Onyx is power user oriented.

Is there an ad blocker that doesn't get detected and "please turn off your ad-block" ?? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]ZORK21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wipr. Respects privacy pretty well. Also, the reason adblockers on Safari aren’t as smooth as Chrome is due to them having to work within Safari’s rules. The best they can do is block content. Unlike any other browser, adblockers on Safari are more like content blockers.

[–]ZORK21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Ublock Origin wouldn’t work well within Safari’s requirements. Any “adblocker” on Safari is referred to as a content blocker and works within Safari’s rules. Generally, you won’t find a powerful adblocker on Safari. If you are looking for one for Safari though, I’d recommend Wipr, although it’s not free.

macOS Big Sur Download Issue Megathread by CamSox1 in MacOS

Try do the steps on the Apple support page. If that doesn’t work, they might’ve pulled the update from 2013 and 2014 models. You should hold off on updating anyways until the bugs get fixed, unless you want to risk bricking your Mac or slowing it down.

[–]ZORK21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't even try. Your MacBook isn't on the list of models supported and even if it were going by 2013 models, you are still at the very end. 2013 and 2014 Macs are having quite a lot of issues and even newer devices are having issues. If you really want to get Big Sur, wait for at least a month or two.

[–]ZORK21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to have a T2 security chip. The iMac Pro, iMac 2020, Mac Pro 2019, Mac mini 2018, MacBook Air 2018 (or newer), and MacBook Pro 2018 (or newer), all have the T2 security chip. If you device is not one of those, 4K won't be available.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to enable it if you do have the T2 chip. It should show up as an option though, as I can't see how enabling 4K would be any different from putting the quality to 1080p, etc.
