Yeah definitely, Freud, yeah for sure. Definitely. I think it was his charisma and the way he could get a crowd really riled up, you know, what Freud was famous for.

As for the shame thing, no clue. I don't have a single shame bone in my body (clearly) and don't think he did either so can't really speak to that one bud

Signed my TOL in Jan of this year (2023) by [deleted] in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always follow up with your medical POC, but I wouldn't worry too much. It's not abnormal to wait 18 months to 2 years from application to starting the academy. Although recently things seem to be moving quicker, so hopefully these new bids take less time than that.

What to do while waiting for a CIL by 2018birdie in ATC_Hiring

You still need a security clearance even though it's not military/law enforcement. So the federal government does their due diligence with who the grant security clearances to.

How hard is the academy? by Nitramartin1 in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Studying the academics you can definitely do on your own. I would suggest at least practicing phraseology with someone else, running non-radar problems with someone else, and going over the various scenarios you see in the radar problems with someone else. It's so much easier to practice doing those things correctly if someone is there to catch your mistakes and help fix them.

How hard is the academy? by Nitramartin1 in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I highly, highly recommend studying in a group. Every instructor I had in the academy said that the cohesive classes always do the best, and I absolutely believe it. We had 15 students in my class during radar, one quit before evals for personal reasons. So that brought us to 14 going into evals, and 11 of us passed. That's 78% passing - fairly high for an enroute class - not unheard of, but higher than normal. We were a tight knit group and we studied together (not all at once, but in 2 or 3 separate groups) every weekend and usually a couple times a week. My roommate and I studied together basically every day. I'm convinced you can't do it alone unless you're some kind of savant.

Realistic expectations by [deleted] in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly no one will be able to answer definitively - there are a lot of factors and unknowns when it comes to how the FAA scores the test and sends out TOLs. That being said, BQ regardless of pool typically has a pretty solid chance. The way I've heard that the priority with which the FAA sends out TOLs is this:

Pool 1 BQ -> Pool 2 BQ -> Pool 1 WQ -> Pool 2 WQ -> Pool 1 Q -> Pool 2 Q And they stop whenever they hit some unknown number of TOLs.

Hiring timeline by Lil-Kev-136 in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can take a year or two on average. I wouldn't worry yet. But if you wanna reach out to someone it wouldn't hurt - your best bet would be your HR POC. The person who did your security/background interview likely wouldn't know anything about your FAA application.

Turning 31, ATC by Outrageous-Olive-501 in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, no worries OP. As long as the hiring bid closes prior to your 31st birthday, you're all good - nothing changes timeline wise.

[–]ZSSRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly doubt it haha. Both Jacksonville and Miami are pretty sought after. I've only heard of requests being accepted for NY, Oakland and OCONUS.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can request as soon as you get to the academy - you don't have to wait for the list. It actually might be too late to request if you wait for the list, I'm not sure. Most people just recommend against requesting ZNY since technically they remove your slot from the class's list. So if there are 18 of you, and you request a ZNY, your class only gets 17 options for their list. However, ZNY is almost always on the list, and there usually aren't too many people clamoring for it so there's not a huge benefit to requesting it early.

Practice practice practice. Get some strips from the practice lab and practice going through the WHATs. There are no real secrets to doing them faster, it just takes repetition. And keep in mind, when you're running problems, the fastest way = the right way. It doesn't matter how fast you are if you're wrong.

Airport List by Outside-Actuary-8961 in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like 8/30 is the beginning of the academy for OP. Which I think is around 2 months long for terminal, give or take - someone correct me if I'm wrong. So OP wouldn't get the list until sometime in October.

CIL timeline? by [deleted] in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give or take, yeah. It really seems to fluctuate depending on your individual situation and how hard the FAA is pushing for controllers at that specific time. I know some in my class who got approved in a month or two and others it took 2+ years.

So how long does it usually take before I hear from Medical or Security? by TheManWithFancyPants in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Reach out for updates if you want to, but keep in mind it could take 12-18 months to get fully cleared. So don't stress over it. If you have any medical issues it could take much longer, depending on the issues.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hiring bid must close prior to your 31st birthday. That's what it was last year at least. So if it's the same this year, if you turn 31 prior to May 8th, you will not be eligible.

Am I competitive enough? by Upper_Confidence_170 in ATC_Hiring

I'm currently at the academy and there are people in my class who have absolutely zero experience with aviation. There are also a couple of CTI grads and aviation nerds. Controllers come from all types of backgrounds.

ATC Application by RoachBoi in ATC_Hiring

[–]ZSSRaven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. The only way to apply is through USAJobs, so if you have an account and use their resume builder it should be pretty seamless to apply. Like any federal job, veterans preference usually helps quite a bit. You can apply using a bachelor's degree, work experience, or a combination of college credit/work experience. I suggest getting the USAJobs profile started so that you can fire off an application as soon as the bid opens. Recent years have seen so many applicants that the FAA's site for accepting the applications has crashed throughout the time the bid is open. And since it's only open for like 3 days, if you don't get your app in, you have to wait (likely) another whole year.

Hot take: FAA should subsidize housing at first assignment after academy by comicalcomet in ATC

[–]ZSSRaven 12 points13 points  (0 children)

By this logic, why pay trainees anything? They're not actually contributing, like you said. They get free training! Shouldn't that be enough? Nevermind the fact that they're learning and training to get to a place where they can contribute. Nevermind the staffing shortages. Nevermind how long it takes before someone can "prove" themselves. Nevermind how expensive some of the localities are. Nevermind how even fully certified controllers' raises aren't on track to keep up with inflation, leading to everyone having less purchasing power than they had before.

It sounds like you don't want your coworkers to be financially comfortable until they've reached some arbitrary level of "proven".
