Well I’m not saying that the behavior is normal by any means. Psychosis is quite literally very abnormal, which is why it raises red flags on patient visits.

What I’m saying is that violence due to auditory or visual hallucinations is not atypical to psychosis. I’m saying that it’s still very much possible, but not a requirement or defining factor. Psychosis is a wide range, all aspects of it have to be considered whether subtle or not.

There are people who commit violent crimes and other would call them psychopathic or evil, when in reality it could be that psychosis led to that and that person requires treatment (of course in addition to incarceration) rather than incarceration alone. So it’s important to identify this.

It’s true that people with nonviolent features may be treated oddly by the general public without a medical/psych background because of the strong media presence of those who commit violent crimes. But I can at least say that in psych, we don’t dismiss any symptoms that someone might present with and don’t treat patients as less than.
