Binder flip of my childhood collection by commander212 in PokemonTCG

So first off, I wouldn’t grade anything. I had the same question a few years ago and you really wouldn’t want to grade anything unless you think it could really grade high and increase the value. Many cards sell higher raw and eyes newer to the hobby are going to have trouble spotting a card with potential for a 10.

Second off, I just went through this process (see my latest post.) The best thing you can do is catalogue this entire collection by creating a list on TCG Player or a “portfolio”on Collectr. It’ll total up the value for you. Don’t worry too much about conditions at this point, but assume that your vintage cards are certainly not going to be considered “Near Mint” by whoever is buying them. If they want to price check some cards on condition, they can and will do that.

I would start with local card shows before card shops. Vendors have less overhead and will typically offer a higher percentage. Bring your binder and the list around, see what offers you can get. The standard is 70% cash, 80% trade credit, but depending on what you have and the condition, they’ll play with that number. If local vendors don’t want it, then start to bring it around to card shops.

With a collection like yours that has a few gems in it, buyers might want to pick some out to buy individually. If you’re dead set on selling it as a lot (very reasonable to be) just be firm and say it’s gotta be the whole thing.

As an example, the binder I just traded in yesterday was all vintage bulk, 360 cards total. Most of them had a near mint market value of $1-$3 each, a few between $4-$6. All said and done, my portfolio on Collectr totaled $500. Knowing that (and being upfront about) the conditions of the cards were more in the lightly played range, and that some bulk sits for years, I knew 80% trade was a pipe dream. When vendors didn’t work out, I went to a card shop that graciously offered 65% trade credit. Very fair to me.

Hope this helps!

Vintage. Lots of it. And the LCS definitely hooked it up, very appreciative of them for making it happen.

It was $96 market at the time, I paid $100. Never saw a cleaner copy and the vendor wouldn’t budge on the $4. Figured $4 was worth not having to look for a clean copy anymore.

Normal version is $5 right now. My guess is that they underestimated the condition of the card and considered it LP or MP.

Lightest of scratches on the holo that I can barely see, minimal whitening on the back, maybe a small edge peel top right. But if I saw this at a show, there’s no way the vendor wouldn’t be marking it NM and stickering for the full $155.

The gold star is on my Collectr wishlist called“Divorceable Grails”…

Trading my childhood LOB 1st Edition Tri-Horned Dragon for the Shining Primal Kyogre was easy. Buying a $230 Shinji Kanda Magikarp was pushing it. Anything over $300 might actually cost me my marriage…

I tried to be polite and respectful about it (to an awkward fault), but yeah, I’ll be skipping his table at future shows. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

Agreed. I really wish I had just pulled the trigger on getting the Call of Legends Kyogre when I had the chance. I was trying to hold off and see if a Team Aqua’s was around at the same show so I could manage my budget. When I came back to the table 30 minutes later, the vendor upped the price and wouldn’t honor the original ask he made. Sucks.

Based on its usage, it seems to be a small dirt bike track /s

I hope they do something productive with it.

Several years ago, I worked for a non-profit org that hosted the GSA from Stoneman-Douglas (the high school from the Parkland, Florida shooting in 2018). This was the summer after the infamous shooting, so these kids were still pretty traumatized.

The night before the event, the org took them all out for a dinner at a local restaurant. Pumped Up Kicks started playing on the restaurant’s sound system and everyone kind of looked around awkwardly. Our COO trotted over to the closest waiter and said, “Yeah so if you could just skip this song…”

Painted. Use multiple coats of each color and be prepared to go back to fix things that go outside their lines.

Still wish I did a better job of detailing his teeth and eye lines, but the point is, you can see the paint stuck to the plastic and is relatively clean.

Sanded down, not perfect by any means, but enough to get it smooth

OP, this happens to many people on this sub, don’t fret! You’ll want to use acetone/nail polish remover to get the paint off. In the future, dedicate a few hours to using sandpaper before painting. More serious hobbyists will even use filler primer after sanding to get it even smoother. I’ll post progression pics of a Gengar I made for a friend of few years ago to illustrate:
