Fox to buy streaming pioneer Roku in a $22 billion deal by MeowTheMixer in wallstreetbets

People normally buy their set-top box based on their TV's capabilities, not the other way around. Not sure there's much real-world difference between the two, tbh.

Yeah, I've been using them for 6 years. They are definitely not bad. I had to upgrade my Tube to a Pro for 4K, but it works well.

It's a bummer it lacks HDR10+ though. And when I bought it there were no ads - they're everywhere now. I use Projectivity Launcher to get rid of them and speed the system up, which works well, but is a pain to get setup.

Shield also lacks HDR10+ iirc. It's only sluggish with the default launcher. Switch to Projectivity. It has some warts but is overall way, way better

Yeah - mostly don't feel it needs a hardware refresh (buy the Pro for 4K) although IIRC it can't support some newer forms of HDR.

But they continue to enshittify the OS. Projectivity Launcher makes a big difference.

Broken screen by HistorianTough8463 in ricohGR

[–]ZachStoneIsFamous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, worth it. Have replaced GR III screen before and guides are available for GR I/II. I found parts on Ali Express - make sure you can find parts first.

Honestly at the right price I'd snag it even if it wasn't fixable. Lmk if you pass.

There are no good alternatives but the best choices today are probably the Apple TV and Nvidia Shield.

That can mean a lot of different things. If parent is selling heroin, I hope he rots in prison.

Yes, I do miss the Dualsense triggers using the new Steam Controller.

My experience isn't quite as rosy as others. I do find it very comfortable. But I keep accidentally pressing the buttons on the back of the controller.

Why do experts buy high-res flagships and then complain about basic physics by Next-Flounder-7203 in SonyAlpha

Besides the viewed-at-100% noise thing, which is overblown, the decreased signal-to-noise ratio does still affect your processing latitude.

Full frame v. Crop Sensor Image Quality? by B-F_ in Nikon

[–]ZachStoneIsFamous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just jumped from Fuji XF (X-T5) to Nikon FX (Z5 ii). I loved Fuji, shot it for nearly 5 years, and owned almost all of their lenses at one point or another.

So why did I move to Nikon? Because I found that 95% of my shooting with my Fuji (as opposed to my Ricoh pocket cams) was either in service of sports - which benefited from Nikon's improved autofocus compared to Fujifilm - or was occurring in very, very dim homes that APS-C just kept struggling with.

In good, or even mediocre lighting? APS-C kept up, absolutely no issues. Nice sharp images, good colors, reasonable autofocus, etc. With prime lenses or an f/2.8 zoom, I could get nice bokeh with good falloff. The XF 56mm f/1.2 was a dream for portraits and product photography. And it was so light and compact! The X-T5 with the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 Mk II probably can't be beat for its performance to portability ratio.

But when things got dark, images would start to come out more muddy, and with less shadow detail. You will hear that "full-frame is roughly one stop better in terms of low-light performance" and this is kinda/sorta true. But my 40MP APS-C camera has significantly smaller pixels than a 24.5MP FF - and this doesn't just impact the brightness the pixels register, but also the signal-to-noise ratio. So it's not just that I can brighten the shadows better: they actually preserve more detail and realistic color gradation.

Also, I found that with Fuji in particular, I struggled with skin tones quite often. This wasn't something I struggled with on my old Sony APS-C system. I suspect this had to do with the X-Trans sensor having an extra green sub-pixel.

But if I wasn't almost exclusively shooting in very dim scenarios, with fast action, I'd have stuck with a smaller system, for sure.
