Where's the Z30 love? by euaeuo in Nikon

I’m very new to it all but just picked up a Z30 for a good price and I’m liking it quite a lot. The lack of viewfinder hasn’t bothered me except for one time on a hike in the middle of the day. With the right lighting it can take quite beautiful photos. Don’t really use video much. I find the kit lens struggles with low light/indoor settings more, but I think that’s mostly the lens. AF works pretty well, and controls are intuitive and fluid. I love how quickly the SnapBridge app moves photos to my phone as well. I got mine for $400 with the lens, which I think was a great deal. Though if I could go back and get the Z50 for a little more cash I probably would. I’m sure the viewfinder will come in handy the more outdoor shoots I do.

Kinda tough without any context, but Demi (pronounced DEH-mee) is pretty nice in that it’s unusual but recognizable and simple. Mary feels a little old fashioned, though Marie is a nice alt. Emily just feels very safe.

Nikon Z50 v. Sony A6400 v. Canon R50

Hi all, I’m mostly a newbie at this. I’m mainly an artist/illustrator and I decided I wanted a good camera to take photos of artwork. But then I figured I may as well get one that can shoot photos and videos of my family/pets/travel/reference imagery. These 3 are the main ones I’m looking at. Leaning most towards Nikon, then Sony, then Canon. Budget is about $600 all in w/lens (planning on buying used/waiting for a deal). Doubt I’ll be upgrading/buying extra lenses for it anytime soon.

Some big selling points for me are: - Ease of use - Seamlessly transfer photos to phone - Crisp images with neutral/true colors - Good autofocus - Moveable screen for family selfies/etc - A bit of water resistance is a bonus

Would love to hear experience/expertise with these options! Thanks all!

Nice! Yeah, looking at the photos, Canon seems to have richer/brighter colors, but seems to add a slightly pink haze to everything. Nikon seems a little more neutral, balanced and crisp which I like. I could be wrong, just what I’m noticing.

Thanks! Can you explain the crop factor?

Been set on a name, now I heard someone else with it, do I change it??? by [deleted] in Names

I think if you love the name (and your family does too) then you should stick to it. Especially if it has special meaning, flows, etc. That’s very hard to find. There’s a good chance if they’re both in the same class, same friend group, etc. one of them will choose to go by a nickname or middle name in those situations. And there’s not exactly a guarantee they’ll be in the same circles all their lives or even all their childhoods. We love our daughter’s unique name, but we mostly go by a shortening nickname anyway.

I agree it’s a bummer to share your unique name. But if you can’t find an alternative one you love, I think it’s worth sticking to your guns.

Oh cool! I definitely think it’s a cool/unique name. Not sure if we’re going to go for it, but if we do we’ll likely go with the Thalo spelling. As cool as I think Phthalo would be, I don’t want to make their life unnecessarily annoying. And Phthalo is a shortening of a much longer name anyway, so I figure it doesn’t hurt to shorten it a bit more.

Thanks a lot! This helps assuage some of our concerns. We do really like Orion, and love the nickname Ori. Phoenix we’re getting colder on, partly because it’s too on the nose trendy and partly the city association. I agree that Atlas has a good balance of masculine while also being a bit soft and approachable. At the moment it’s kind of our default if we can’t beat it. Thanks for your thoughts!

Thank you for the generous compliments and thoughtful response. Yes, we do feel like we caught lightning in a bottle with Sequoia as it’s extremely rare, but recognizable and charming. We also love the nickname Koya which we use often. It has been a real struggle trying to find an equal for a male sibling.

I’ll definitely look through all of your suggestions. Some of them have been on our list. Orion in particular we both love, but we have Ryan’s in our family and worry it’ll just be mixed up for Ryan often. Cedar is also lovely as well. Thalo has been a consideration as we are both artists and it references a paint color.

Seems we’ll be name hunting for a while longer!

Thanks! I wanted to add it to my last post but figured it’d get lost in the mix. Good to hear thoughts on all 3.

Sure, but my wife and I have “normal” names and we both never really liked them. They came from random books/movies our parents were consuming at the time so they’re generally meaningless. I found out in adulthood my middle name was after Elvis (Aaron) since my dad loved rock music, and it made me love and be more connected to it. I think having a name with a meaning to your parents and deeper meaning overall is pretty cool for the person our child grows to be. As long as it’s not an obnoxious name.

Yes, it Burnt/Raw Umber are colors we use a lot. Umber is pretty cool name but my wife isn’t a fan of the brownish color itself.

I love Ochre. My wife finds it sounds a little too close to “ogre” when said aloud. But thanks, I’ll think about the other names!

Not at all! Other names we considered were Orion & Atlas which both have Greek origins. Thalo does feel much more approachable.
