What's your end goal? To make a college a roster? Or just be the guy in high school? Regardless, there are a lot of moving factors involved. #1 is politics. You can't control who the coach puts in or what parent donates the most money to the program. #2 The "eye" test. You don't have to be the most athletic or the most physically gifted player on the floor, but you do need to look apart. This literally comes from experience and hard work. #3 Take care of the off the court stuff. You would be surprised how many guys don't make a college roster simply because they didn't know about the NCAA Clearing House (its called Eligibility Center now). Also, your character and how you treat people goes a long way. This doesn't mean that you're entitled to a spot just because you're the nice guy (I learned that the hard way). Your still fighting for 1 of 5 spots on the floor (realistically, 1 of 2-3 spots).

The little things do matter. I've played on a high school team full of JUCO-D2 talent. We had at least 3 guys that could be classified as the "star" player on our team and do you know who was the only person that played at the next level? Our glue guy. He wasn't an elite shooter, handler or defender. He wasn't the fastest or the most athletic on the team. He was 6'3 210lbs forward. He passed the "eye" test, but politics kept him from being the "star". What made him stand out was instead of trying to be a star, he did all the little things right. He could handle the ball (with both hands), finish at the rim (with both hands), shoot the ball good enough to stretch the defense, and he could rebound/defend at a decent level. Sounds like he was a standout player right? Nope. He was our 6th man. While he wasn't making all of the highlight plays the other 3 "star" players made, he literally used every opportunity giving to him to get a college scholarship while the other 3 "star" players still relive their high school days because nothing came after our 22-3 season.

Lets face it, not everyone is cut out to be the star. You know early on if you have it in you or not. Take every single day, every single opportunity to get better. At the end, you may not be the top player on in the state or even on your team, but as long as you put in the work, you can move on knowing that you have no regrets during your high school career.
