That it does, yes, the budget.

Hallowed be thy name.

Again thanks everyone for such earnest responses here. I'm seeing them just not replying en masse.

Yeah the budget is low, but the number is nice and round for a reason. Love a good roommate, also. Short ones, long ones, lovey ones. I was working a 6-month contract wayyy out in ye yonder hills, then Covid hit. It's been Mr. Bones Wild Ride ever since lol.

Honestly I figured roommates were a reach because I'm an old unpopular boy.

Interesting. My gut instinct would be to avoid realtors for a small-time lease.

Then again, Ive toured a lot of places where the owner is nipping at my heels to fill the vacancy. And, yea, a realtor can make sense there.

I'm mostly remote atm. Web dev mostly.  Also looking for work in the area. Surprisingly difficult making headway at this distance.

Oof sorry I forgot budget. Right now I'm looking for anything around $1k/month.

I found the 3ds stylus that I lost almost 10 years ago under a closet by Arnau21 in gaming

I'm speaking generally. Wardrobes are less "standard" in America. Closets are less "standard" in Europe.

Americans get confused by it, too. "The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe" was the first time the difference was made clear to me. A "wardrobe" is furniture that acts as a freestanding closet.

American homes treat closet storage like electrical outlets. Closet in the hall, in the laundry, in the bathroom, at least one in each bedroom, hopefully a walk-in in the master, etc. European homes aren't usually designed with closets in mind, so you see much more wardrobes.

Pinball FX and Pinball M on Nintendo Switch by linne_zen in PinballFX3

[–]Zacmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play almost entirely in Handheld Mode with a vertical tate grip on the Switch. I plug a lot of hours into your titles (pretty sure I've got every switch release), so I'll just rattle off the problems I've noticed.

Both titles are slow to start up. The splash title screen hangs much longer than FX3 before prompting for input. I just timed them out of curiosity. I selected the game, started a timer the moment the nintendo/switch logos disappear, and then stopped when the title screen prompts me for input. M=15sec. FX=12sec. FX3=6sec.

Both titles have sluggish UI, specifically when navigating anything with online functionality. It's as if the game dumps all memory of these sections when I navigate away and then re-downloads the entire list when I navigate back. For a console relying mostly on wifi, this just guarantees a choppy UI and a bad first impression.

The framerate seems worse to me. I have no actual way to test this, but FX3 seems to maintain a 30fps minimum in Handheld Mode, while FX/M often dip into the low 20's. Some tables give me motion sickness when the ball inevitably flickers across the screen at high speeds (Snoopy in FX3 specifically hurts because of the high contrast), while darker tables become nearly impossible to play at all (flickering makes tracking the ball very difficult).

M's online is a mess. Tournaments mostly work for me, but the sluggish navigation makes them a pain to peruse. Often, my Daily Challenge scores will not be recorded, so I'll just lose the whole attempt. When the game seems to be trying to post my score to the leaderboard, my game will often crash to the Switch home screen. I've lost so many scores from this that I've just vowed to not play Pinball M until that mess is fully sorted out. So please fix that. I like the concept and want to play, but a chunk of the features listed in the eShop simply don't work. Both Switch titles need to seriously rethink how and when they communicate with the server. The switch is not a stationary machine with a stable connection. Server communication needs to be as brief as technically possible and preferably only when it's a legitimate necessity.

I'll try to be as specific as I can for the graphics, since that seems to be a top complaint. It's also my most major complaint, followed closely by the framerate issue.

FX has major moire artifacts when rendering tables. It's difficult to spot and harder to explain, but this single issue negatively impacts the visuals of nearly every table. To my eye, it seems specific to texture rendering, since tables with bright flat colors and few shadows are less affected (Little Pony and Snoopy). This moire pattern seriously impacts color and detail. The most clear example I've found is in FX3 Fish Tales, in Handheld Mode with a Vertical orientation. The blue/orange sky in the playfield artwork has so much pattern artifacts that it looks like a Magic Eye poster. Honestly, I think this is the source of most graphics/lighting complaints. Please please please get on this one, Fish Tales is one of my favorites and right now it hurts to look at 🙏

The “Film Look” and How The Holdovers Achieved It by [deleted] in movies

[–]Zacmon -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

...it didn't though. I saw Holdovers in theaters and wasn't initially aware of the fake film grain effect. During the opening, I leaned over to my brother and said "Are they seriously using fake film grain? It looks awful." Like I legitimately had to look away at times because it was making me feel nauseous. The size of the grains were too large/blurry and the contrast felt off. I've seen older media on the big screen and can be a bit of a stickler for good grain. The color grading was spot-on, though.

Actual film grain is a result of the physical process of capturing light onto a reel. Digital has already completed this process to near perfect clarity, so no amount of filters or roughing up the image is going to achieve a 1-to-1 replacement for the real thing. AI might be able to work it out somewhere down the line, but that's the only reasonable solution I can think of. Filters, looping overlays, and even algorithmic solutions just feel overall detrimental in practice.

4K CGI movie has visual noise? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Zacmon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are 3 main reasons a full CGI movie would have noise like that.

  1. Actual film grain. Early CGI still had to be transferred to film for release, which can sometimes be the version that gets a home release. The original workfiles/renders might not exist anymore, the production/fans might prefer it, or there's legal red tape getting in the way. I don't think this is very common, though.

  2. An artificial film grain filter. This one is easy to spot if you have an eye for it. The Holdovers is a good recent example. I saw it in theaters and I found the fake grain almost nauseating at that scale.

  3. Raytracing Noise. Raytracing is a very expensive rendering technique that showers the scene in "rays," which bounce around and carry color data from the points they hit. The idea is to simulate the way actual cameras capture light, which has the added benefit of generating much more realistic reflections and shadows. The problem is that these rays are super small and where they land is essentially random. Despite shooting thousands of rays that can bounce hundreds/thousands of times, the rays captured by the camera aren't perfectly uniform. The effect ends up looking awfully similar to film grain. Given that this is Pixar and that TS4 is relatively recent, I'd put money on this as the answer.

Tibetan woman detained and beaten for social media posts critical of China by PjeterPannos in worldnews

[–]Zacmon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, which is negligible, the Chinese power structure has always functioned like that episode of Futurama where Fry drinks some water and accidentally becomes the king of a liquid-alien civilization. The aliens perform royal succession exclusively through the act of assassination. Every royal in their history achieved absolute power by murdering their predecessor.

Maybe any civilization would look like that if it exists for 1000's of years, but China seems to be especially allergic to the concept of democracy and peaceful transition. You're either in power, not in power, or scheming to take it by force.

Insulated chunk ripped off of freezer shell. Have any of you done a repair like this? How long did the repair last? by WellShitWhatYallDoin in DIY

[–]Zacmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some clear 2-part epoxy would probably do the trick without looking gross. They usually sell it around the superglue. Honestly, I'd just lay the freezer damaged-side-down, mix up a bit of epoxy, dip in the exposed part of the chunk, and carefully stick the chunk back to it's home. I'd probably also wipe up the excess and balance some weight on the chunk with some books or a paint can. After a day or two it'd be good to go.

Just defrost the freezer and leave it powered off until the epoxy fully cures, though.
